R&B Fridays: Episode 143

After a few weeks away, R&B Fridays is back and swollen with star quality for this week’s edition. Of course, in keeping with tradition, it’s also released on a Sunday. Nice to be back into routine eh?

Not too much to catch up on in terms of related audio posts, but there are a few videos that’ll interest the R&BF crowd, including Rita Ora’s debut visual, Preeya Kalidas’ latest effort, and a couple of new clips from Drake’s Take Care. Head on below to compliment that visual feast with some audio refreshment.

Rita Ora - R.I.P. ft. Tinie Tempah [Video]

I find it hard to separate this track from Drake’s demo that leaked the other year. Obviously we were never supposed to hear the Drake version as he wrote it for a female lead in mind, but he did a damn good job of it! Once it had leaked I didn’t think we’d ever hear a singer take and finish it, but eventually it’s found its way to new Roc Nation signee, Rita Ora. Those who aren’t familiar with that name should know that she’s a British singer, who’s creating a lot of buzz at the moment, so get in on the hype now.

The video itself is nothing special but does well as support for a big single. I do think that getting Tinie Tempah in as a feature is a good attempt to add some original flavour to a song many had rinsed when the Drake version had leaked. You can pre-order this single by clicking on below.

Labrinth ft. Tinie Tempah, Kano, Wretch 32 & Busta Rhymes - Earthquake Remix

Yeah, this happened.

Multi-talented Labrinth, who is an instrumentalist and produces, sings and even raps, has gathered this all star cast. Three leading UK urban artists alongside the legend that is Busta Rhymes? A recipe for a classic collabo.

Labrinth’s album, Electronic Earth will be released on the 19th of this month.

R&B Fridays: Episode 140

No artist in the R&B and pop genres has generated the buzz Rita Ora has over the past week, so it’s only right that the Roc Nation signee and London native gets the headline spot for yet another milestone episode.

It’s been a solid week in the music world, with a few very enjoyable releases from a range of genres. Miguel came through with an excellent free 3-track EP, Jesse Boykins III delivered what could be a breakout moment for the lavishly-talented singer with a video for B4 The Night Is Thru, Kid Cudi’s new WZRD project released their debut album to a positive reception here on OTU, and finally the mysterious A. Chal dropped off one of the finest electronic instrumentals I’ve heard in some time.

Eric Turner, Lupe Fiasco and Tinie Tempah-Angels and Stars Video

Eric Turner’s Youtube channel mentions Turner’s “stadium sound“, and that’s a rather accurate description. I’ve had this song on repeat ever since it was released a short while ago, and it’s stadium pop style is a big reason for that, making for an uplifting and engaging listen that feels suited to any listening environment.

Eric’s been involved in some big tracks with both artists in the past, as Indi’s already covered in the audio review, and their inclusion makes for a big duo of co-signs. I’m a fan of Lupe’s verse on this, with his speed and timing sliding in nicely with the production, whilst Tinie’s contribution is surprisingly enjoyable, alongside the huge Eric Turner vocals which are an excellent listen that really anchor the track.

The video has a likeable spray paint effect throughout, as the respective performers are visualised in an exciting, perpetually-moving art style that adds an unpredictability and uniqueness to the visual, in a relatively simple manner. Decent watch that brings the audio to life.

Eric Turner - Angels & Stars ft. Tinie Tempah & Lupe Fiasco

Eric Turner’s worked with both Tinie Tempah and Lupe Fiasco on separate tracks in the past, so it’s only natural these three come together for a big collaboration (keeping with the theme of transatlantic-ism!).

If you’ve heard any of Eric Turner’s collabos with urban artists from both sides of the Atlantic, then you’ll know what to expect: Very addictive vocals from Eric with a banger of a beat to match. Lupe and Tinie both come through with decent verses, but would it be fair to say that Tinie’s verse is the better of the two? These are controversial times we live in. Download below.

Tinie Tempah - The Motto (Merry Xmas Freestyle)

Tinie Tempah wishes us a merry Christmas with this little freestyle vid. Rapping over Drake and Lil’ Wayne’s track, The Motto (for which they just released a video for), Tinie flows pretty nice to this beat. Pretty cool cameo from the delightful Ed Sheeran too.

Go grab Tinie Tempah’s Happy Birthday EP from here. As you can tell he likes special days.

Tinie Tempah-Happy Birthday EP

I’ve never been the biggest fan of this guy’s music (though undoubtedly, some of it is irresistable in a club!), but he certainly has his fans and the recent release with J. Cole and Wretch 32 from this project wasn’t a bad track by any means.

The full (free) project includes more big guest spots, including G.O.O.D. Music’s Big Sean and Pusha T, UK favourites Giggs and Chipmunk, and many other names from both sides of the Atlantic. I’m sure there will be a couple of entertaining club stompers on this for the mainstream heads, and you can grab the whole 8-track project for free below.

Tinie Tempah - Like It Or Love It ft. Wretch 32 & J. Cole

A few days late on this one, apologies! But on the upside: if you haven’t heard this yet then you can rectify that by grabbing it now.

Big look for the UK here with Tinie recruiting J. Cole for a track that will feature on his upcoming mixtape, Happy Birthday. Also enlisting one of my favourite emcees about in Wretch 32, he instantly makes this a track that will feature in my rotation for the foreseeable future. Download link below.

Re:Definition 2011 @ The Hackney Empire - Thursday 7th July

Year after year, RE:DEFINITION successfully aims to tell the tale of an area that lies at the crossroads where old values meet new ideals. Last summer’s presentation was a genre-blurring live concept album which brought together some of the biggest names in urban music, as part of the Create11. This year, Urban Development have teamed up with the Barbican and Create11 to present you with a collective of musicians, emcees, vocalists, actors and dancers on July 7th at The Hackney Empire.

Fusing live performance, multi-media and theatre on a journey that encompasses love, conflict, tradition and aspirations in east London, performers are KANO, GHETTS, TALAY RILEY, ROXXXAN, DONAEO, JAY NORTON, SELAH, SCRUFIZZER, MIKE HOUGH, MPHO, LOVELLE, MIKILL PANE, LADY CHANN and ABEL MILLER. Each artist’s tracks and lyrics will form the story that is RE:Definition.

With visuals coming from music video director and producer JAK FRSH, who’s worked with Wiley and Tinie Tempah amongst others, it’s back over to MATTHEW ‘EXCALIBAH’ XIA to direct the show. Visit www.barbican.org.uk or www.urbandevelopment.co.uk for tickets.

Be smart and support not only UK music, but the depth of creativity and originality on show here. If you’re down in the London area, don’t insult your own intelligence-get involved (no, I’m not making a commission!).

Tinie Tempah-Foreign Object Mixtape (Hosted by DJ Whoo Kid and Russell Brand)

Sorry we’re a bit late on this one. Following on from The Micro Mixtape Tinie gave us back in December, he’s now dropped Foreign Object. As was with The Micro Mixtape this is clearly aimed at Tinie’s assault on the American market. Yet again his track choice is quite impeccable, choosing to go in on some of the biggest tunes out there at the moment. Just like the Mann mixtape below, this is a must for the mainstream fans.

R&B Fridays: Episode 88

A few interesting remixes this week, with over a third of this week’s tracks being of the remix variety. Other great tracks in there too, making this an R&B Friday that you’ll forgive for being a little late to the party.

Unlike recent weeks, there’s a pretty big recap on this week’s notable R&B/pop events: Yasmin previewed her new single, Tank came through with a new video, Timbaland’s #TimboThursdays rolled on, Trey Songz released the Love Faces video,  Miguel and Gilbere Forte combined for a fantastic effort, Diddy’s Dirty Money trio released an official mixtape, last week’s notable Grammy performances, Bruno Mars’ Grenade getting the Lil’ Wayne remix, and finally Erin Christine’s fantastic performance of Naked. All worth checking out, and more worth your time after the click below.

R&B Fridays: Episode 85

To me, any time between midnight and 4am counts as the ‘night before’, so by my reckoning this is still a Friday night and hence on time. Don’t question it, just embrace it.

Short recap this week, with just the three noteworthy and relevant posts from the R&B/pop world: Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding’s collaboration got some visuals, a pretty interesting electro remix of Diddy-Dirty Money’s I Hate That You Love Me was liberated, and finally Musiq Soulchild came through with one of the better tracks of January, with his first single from his upcoming sixth album.

Formalities are now dealt with, commence your clicking as of right…now.

Tinie Tempah ft. Ellie Goulding-Wonderman [Video]

Here we have the the latest video from Tinie Tempah’s album Disc-Overy. Certainly one for the mainstream fans, and whilst I can’t really protest to this being my type of music, when I first purchased the album this was one of the tracks that I was looking forward to hearing after seeing that Ellie Goulding was going to feature.

Unfortunately I thought it was quite a weak effort all round, with such lyrical ‘masterpieces’ as “These haters couldn’t get to where I am with a full tank of petrol, My uncle used to drink a can of kestrel when life got stressful” I doubt you could argue. The video itself is clearly inspired by the 70′s cult classic The Six Million Dollar Man, and it’s actually not too bad an effort, making the track slightly more enjoyable.

R&B Fridays: Episode 81

Will R&B Fridays ever be on time? That’s the question.

I’ve more than compensated though, throwing in almost 20 tracks for you to enjoy this week. There’s no skimping on the big names either, as there are some strong contributions from some of the bigger stars in the R&B/pop world. No real recap this week as the music industry has all but shut down, though the Alicia Keys version of Devil In A New Dress is a must-download.

Tinchy Stryder and Melanie Fiona-Let It Rain Video

Very similar to the Tinie Tempah video posted yesterday, Tinchy comes through with a top vocalist (certainly one of my personal favourites) on the hook for a more emotional, R&B-esque effort for his latest single.

As with the Tinie single, I don’t lay claim to knowing/owning much of Tinchy’s music, but enough to know this is probably slower than his usual dancefloor stuff. Unquestionably, the highlight of the track is the Melanie Fiona hook, which is delivered in a rousing, motivational manner that elevates this track considerably.

Fairly simple video, with no particular story and lots of dark, rainy scenes to play off the title. A mainstream track through and through, this will please the chart fans.

R&B Fridays: Episode 78

Flying ever quicker towards that milestone 100th episode, episode 78 stops off at many of your favourite artists, having already done so a few times this week: we were given the new Michael Jackson video, R. Kelly then covered one of MJ’s biggest hits (as well as turning back the clock with some live performances), and Tinie Tempah unleashed his latest video.

However, it’s been the upcoming names that have really shone this past 7 days, with Jesse Boykins releasing the highlight of this week’s R&B/soul and Theophilus London adding a modern spin to Tweet’s Oops, courtesy of a Lindsay Lohan assist.

Cast your eyes and cursors downwards for more meaty (or soya) chunks of music.

Tinie Tempah and Kelly Rowland-Invincible Video

Visuals for Tinie’s latest single, with another mainstream effort that will please the chart fans. I don’t lay claim to having heard more than 2/3 of his songs, but this is certainly slower and more emotional (I’d go as far as to say it’s R&B/pop) than his usual dancefloor fare. Hence, it’s fairly likeable for having some semblance of meaning, with an uplifting hook from Rowland alongside Tinie’s love-centric rhymes.

The video is OK, meshing documenatry-style footage with nightime scenes of himself and Rowland. Nothing spectacular, but easily digestable for the pop crowd.

His shiny ‘suit’ is absolutely terrible though, he looks as if he’s covered in wet paint. You can grab this track on the album and this (free) mixtape.

Tinie Tempah-The Micro Mixtape [Hosted by DJ Whoo Kid]

Tinie Tempah spitting over several different smash hits. Pretty interesting hearing him go in on the US tracks in particular. With this mini mixtape being hosted by DJ Whoo Kid of all people, well it’s clear to see Tinie has the US in his sights. Click here to download the mixtape and see below for the tracklist.

Tinchy Stryder-Game Over Official Video ft. Giggs, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Example & Chipmunk

Official video to one of the biggest tracks in Grime history (yeah I’m putting it out there). I do feel at times that there’s too much dissing going on in the UK scene, I appreciate the competitive side of the genre and that it was a genre born from battling, but seeing the biggest MCs collaborate like they have on this track is just superb to see.

Nothing flashy about the video, but it’s pretty good, keeps the focus on each MC which highlights each of their unique lyrical ability and flow on the mic.

Best verse for me would have to go to Devlin, there’s nobody spitting like him over on these shores. Audio can be attained from here.

Tinchy Stryder-Game Over ft. Giggs, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Example & Chipmunk

This track was premièred last week on the radio and I’ve been waiting impatiently for a good quality version. Thanks to London To MK, we finally have a CDQ of this star studded lineup.

UK stand up tall.

Tinie Tempah - Let Go ft. Emeli Sandé

The last leak we’ll be posting from Tinie Tempah’s upcoming album, Disc-overy and what a leak this is. The quality of his previous tracks from this album had impressed me a lot, but this one is by far my favourite one.

Emeli Sandé is a name you may recognise from a big Wiley track, and she does a great job on the hook for this one too.

Tinie Tempah-Miami 2 Ibiza ft. Swedish House Mafia [Video]

Not checked this video out yet myself, but this track is a certified hit (as I told you when it first dropped).

Not heard it yet? Well here’s your chance now. I don’t really check out the radio or the music channels, but this will be ever-present before long on them, if not already!

I for one could not stop listening to it when I first got this track, which is probably why I won’t watch the video now, as I’ll without doubt keep replaying it until the early hours of the morning!

Audio can be shamelessly taken from clicking here.

Tinie Tempah – Disc-Overy [Album Preview]

Nice preview of each track from Tempah’s upcoming debut. My impressions from this preview is that this is an album with a mighty fine collection of beats!

Lyrically and musically I wouldn’t expect anything groundbreaking tbh, but most definitely seems like it’ll be a great cd to throw in the car.

Tinie Tempah/Swedish House Mafia - Miami 2 Ibiza

Tinie Tempah….Swedish House Mafia….Miami 2 Ibiza….? Absolutely no reviewing of this track is necessary, you know exactly how this is going to sound. I’ve been pretty critical of Tinie in the past and I’m not taking any of that criticism back, but he can make music that’s good to listen to if you’re not taking him too seriously. Basically the UK version of Flo Rida.

Oh, this is also going to be on his upcoming album, artwork for which is to the left.

Edit: I actually can’t stop listening to this, been on repeat all evening!

Tinie Tempah – Written In The Stars [Video]

Official video already for the new Tinie Tempah track – the English folk tend to bust them out quicker than our American cousins! Judging by the quick look I had at this vid, Tinie Tempah has very strong backing from his label, with regards to budget spent on visuals.

Audio for this sure to be mainstream hit can be attained from here.
