R&B Fridays: Episode 111

Very exciting episode this week, with some of my favourite artists making appearances, as well as a couple of fresh new names. Pretty much strong material all the way through, making this one of the more essential episodes of recent weeks.

Just the two relevant posts to catch up on from the week gone by: Chris Brown teamed up with Game for the latter’s latest video, and Modestep dropped off a monster dubstep/alternative hybrid that’s sure to be a huge hit this summer.

R&B Fridays: Episode 94

There’s one simple reason this is late: I forgot. I subsequently considered leaving it for this week, but then realised how many of your lives cling on to the faint glimmer of light and tiny shreds of hope that R&B Friday gives you.

Solid material dropped throughout the week, including a not-to-be-slept-on mixtape from Mateo, Gilbere Forte dropped a superb remix of an Adele track, an interesting piece of retro dance-pop from Holy Ghost!, unusual visuals for Katy Perry and Kanye West’s collaboration, and finally a video for Chipmunk’s latest single with the lovely Keri Hilson.

Click below for this week’s episode, complete with a throwback for good measure.

Sean Garrett and J. Cole-Feel Love Video

Garrett has been very hit-and-miss in the last year or two, but definitely got it right with this track. It’s definitely his strongest effort of the aforementioned period, and stands up as one of the better R&B tracks from last year. Of the two versions recorded (the other being with Drake), the J. Cole version has been picked for the official single/video treatment, which I assume is related to them now being labelmates over on Roc Nation.

The hook and Cole’s verses are the highlights of this track, with the track built around Garrett’s catchy, emotional hook. Cole really justifies being picked over Drake here, as he tackles the relationship/love aspect with the same sharp lyricism he brings to his usual content. Video is surprisingly decent too, unravelling a mini-story throughout that add an extra layer to the track, making it a nice all-round experience. Worth a watch and definitely worth a listen.

Audio for this is here, and the Drake version here.

R&B Fridays: Episode 72

Plenty to recap from the past week: Behind-the-scenes with Rihanna and Drake, new visuals from Nicki Minaj, a video for Dirty Money and Drake’s collabo, three mastered tracks from Ciara/Usher, Akon and Nicole Scherzinger, and finally the finished version of Jamie Foxx and Drake’s fantastic Fall For Your Type.

Hip-Hop Collaboration Catch Up

Lots of big hip-hop acts involved in the three collaborations here, which I put on the backburner slightly.

All of them are solid, with the Diddy/Ross track boasting a relaxing beat that will win many admirers. The Busta/50 track has some real potential, with a slightly dark feel that suits all involved parties nicely. The final track is a remix of this one and has some great features, the highlight being Luda and Twista’s contributions.

Quick Blast: Jim Jones and Sean Garrett-Gettin’ It

A quick blast, only on the basis that there’s not too much to review here. It’s a decent, fairly standard bit of mainstream music with a catchy hook from Garrett, and that same old braggadocios style from Jim Jones. Not anything groundbreaking, but one that the mainstream audience will really enjoy.

Lil' Jon, Ice Cube, Sean Garrett, Twista & Many More-Oh Yeah Remix

I didn’t know who to pick for the picture, so please enjoy this welcome dose of hilarity.

I’ve never heard of Ray Rizzy but he’s grabbed 9 other names for this track, and some of them are pretty big deals. Ice Cube would be the standout in the list, especially given that the nature of the other guests (Lil’ Jon, Garrett etc.) implies this will probably be fairly poppy and club-oriented.

Quick Blast: Collabos That Got Lost In The Mess

In the mess that was yesterday’s ‘technical difficulties’, there were a couple of collabos that didn’t get posted. Throw those in with another from earlier today, and we’ve got a nice little triple pack for you. Enjoy.

Gucci Mane-Late ft. Sean Garrett and Yo Gotti
-Garrett nails the hook.

Maino-It’s On Tonight ft. Snoop Dogg
-Decent all-rounder, good beat.

Pone Boy-Another Planet ft. Chris Brown, Plies and Jawan Harris
-Mainstream hip-hop/R&B crossover. Jawan Harris is 12-years old.

Sean Garrett, Bun B and Yo Gotti-Summer Love Video

In a rush, so here’s one to warm you up for what should be a stellar episode of R&B Fridays.

Sean Garrett-The Inkwell Mixtape

Pretty sure this was originally announced/scheduled to drop quite a while back, but finally we get the newest project from Sean Garrett. Having looked at the tracklist (which you can also do after the click), I’m on the fence: there are a couple of tracks I know are good, and a couple I know are not.

R&B dedicates will probably enjoy the whole thing in fairness, it’s simply my knowledge of Garrett’s real potential (based on his rare, Japan-only debut album) that creates disappointment with some of the new stuff. The last 2 tracks on the tape are from the aforementioned album, and you can click here to grab a previous mixtape that included another 4. You’ll soon see why I get frustrated with the guy! Sean Garrett and Drake-Feel Love (No Tags)

A tagless version of the great collabo from these two, let loose a couple of R&B Fridays ago. Really not a track to miss out on, and if the DJ tags put you off checking it out before, you’ve got absolutely no excuse now. One of Garrett’s best songs to date, without question.

R&B Fridays: Episode 61

Fingers crossed, this week’s R&B Friday will actually reach you on time!

A really diverse episode awaits you this week, with both an interesting mixture of tracks and a range of well-known artists making the cut this week. Plenty of content with over 20 tracks making up this instalment, you should have enough to see you through the next week.

Hit that red line below and eat as much as you like. Go on, go crazy. No-one’s watching.

Visuals for Garrett’s hype single, originally dropped a few months back. My thoughts on the track were made pretty clear then, so save me from repeating myself and click here to see that/get the audio.

R&B Fridays: Episode 59

Busy, busy day to blame for the delay on this. That, and the fact I forgot I do these. Woops. Anywho, I’ve more than made up for it by throwing in some massive names this week, including  Ne-Yo, Trey Songz, Johnta Austin and many more. Enough delaying, click below and get stuck into the good stuff.

Sean Garrett/Nicki Minaj - Get It All

Official video for that Sean Garrett/Nicki Minaj collabo. I don’t think even Sean himself could tell you what genre of music he makes, from the sounds of this song it sounds like he can’t decide whether it’s R&B, hip-hop or pop! Does that just makes him versatile or one confused bloke…?

Audio can be taken from an R&B Friday that was posted several months ago, as you’ll see from his comments on this track, Ajay was not a fan.

Sean Garrett/Bun-B/Yo Gotti/Da Youngfellaz - Summer Love/You're Welcome

Couple of tracks here to warm you up for tonight’s R&B Friday. These two were slightly too hip-hop for me to include, so I’ve decided to let them loose now. Enjoy the quality of these two tracks, as tonight’s episode is going to be of similar/better standard.

R&B Fridays: Episode 54

Here it is: my last R&B Friday for around a month. Don’t you worry though, we’ve got plenty planned to keep you supplied and satisfied.

This week has material from a really wide range of artists and styles, from established artists like Timbaland to newcomers such as Sammie. Good stuff to keep you going until the surprises in store for you next week, be sure to click on and enjoy some R&B.

R&B Fridays: Episode 50

Many of your Fridays have been centered around this OTU institution, and I’m glad to deliver this 50th episode of the hugely popular series. I’ve enjoyed writing it as much as you have reading it.

Before you see what’s in store this week, I’ve actually sprinkled a lot of R&B in other posts this week to build up some R&B love prior to this episode that you should check for. First off, go here for Ne-Yo’s new single. After that, check out the final version of Alicia Keys’ Rapture, Estelle’s latest single, a superb track from The-Dream, amongst other R&B-influenced tracks that have been posted.

Done all that? Good on you. Time to get the rest!

R&B Fridays: Episode 49 (Also, My 1000th Post!)

49 episodes in, and the fantastic material still keeps coming. The common theme of recent weeks has been a frightening consistency in the quality, as we’ve seen some superb R&B tracks being let loose in anticipation of the summer. Whereas previous R&B Fridays have been a bit of a struggle to fill/review, the past few weeks have certainly made my (busy) life a lot easier!

This week is no different, and you’ve got some very good stuff to look forward to in your immediate future from the likes of Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Amerie and many more. Not as many lesser-known names as there usually are, instead we’ve got the more established names looking to make their mark. Click on to let them know if they got it right.

Edit: This is my 1000th post on this site, on the eve of my final University exam. Celebrations aplenty!

R&B Fridays (on a Saturday): Episode 45

Sorry for the delay guys, as you know we were hacked on Friday night so I couldn’t get this out.

A nice even 20 tracks of new stuff for you this week, and lots of variety in there too in terms of styles and artists. Probably leaning more towards well-known artists this week, although there are still a couple of newbies for you to start getting into.

The quality is really high in this one, so be sure to give most/all of it a go. I’ve kindly weeded out most of the rubbish stuff, irrespective of artist calibre: I’m feeling ruthless! (Grr, roar etc)

R&B Fridays: Episode 42

Sorry for the delay, but this was a hard episode, a busy day, and there were upload problems! There are 149 tracks in this, but I’m not going to lie and pretend I’ve listened to them all because I haven’t. The difficulty comes in figuring out the best way of shoehorning them all into one episode: I’ve opted to split up the stuff in .zip file ‘packs’ for artists who had 10+ songs, instead of doing part 2, 3 etc.

Whilst that should work for most, some of you are backwards so I’ve made a mini-tutorial on how to use .zip/.rar files here (Office 2003 or older? Click here). The things we do for you.

Nicki Minaj and Sean Garrett-Massive Attack Video

I’m really not sure how I feel about this track. Indi is a fan though, and I think it will grow on me after a few listens. It’s wildly off-beat, so it will take a couple of spins to let it settle I suppose. It will be a big club hit though, no question.

Video is pretty crazy as you’d expect, with various cameos including Amber Rose.

R&B Fridays (Wednesday): Episode 41 Part 2

So here’s the deal. This is the stuff that I couldn’t fit into the last episode, but as I’ve got so much new material to post today (and I’m feeling lazy/tired), I’m foregoing my usual track-by-track analysis and just posting up the links.

Pick off what you want, and be prepared for an absolute massive R&B Friday this week. Why? Because I have about 150 tracks for it already. Yes, you read that right. Goodbye life.

Nicki Minaj's First Proper Single

Another nice club track which features a rather addictive chorus by singer/songwriter Sean Garrett. I’ve had this one on repeat for the past 20 mins or so, so you don’t need me to tell you it’s good.

R&B Fridays: Episode 41

50 tracks. I had to plough through 50 tracks this week! Expect a part 2 post in the next few days as a result.

The crazy thing is that pretty much all of the tracks are from really big name artists, which makes this episode (and the sequel) pretty stacked at 22 tracks each (5/6 of the tracks were poor, hence a 44 total!).

Lloyd, Keri, Leona, R-Les, and many more are all waiting for you after the click. There’s some real quality in here (especially from Johnta and Lloyd) and this is possibly the best episode ever, so be sure to check this one out whether you’re a new fan or a regular.

R&B Fridays: Episode 40

40 episodes. Wow.

Click on for a 21-track barrage of music, including new music from Lloyd, Jagged Edge, Cheryl Cole and a stunner from R. Kelly. Before you do all that, make sure you check out the R&B Throwback I dropped earlier this week from Sterling Simms. Done that? Good.

FYI, Megan Fox has absolutely nothing to do with this episode. She just came for the 40th episode celebrations.

Sean Garrett-The Pen Vol. 1 Mixtape

Alright, so you guys should know I’m a huge fan of this dude. He’s one of the leading R&B songwriters/producers and his solo album (which was only released in Japan) was absolutely brilliant. If you want great R&B, I’d recommend you sourced it.

He’s gearing up for a US release, and here’s a taster. This mixtape below has 8 tracks, of which the last 5 can be found on his debut album. 4 of them were probably the strongest on the album too so it’s 100% worth checking out. I’m not as keen on his new stuff (i.e. the first 3 tracks which have been in previous R&B Fridays) but I’m a huge fan of the others. They’re up there with my favourite R&B tracks of recent years, so don’t let yourself down.
