Statik Selektah-Extended Play (Full Album Stream)

With an incredible number of collaborations, joint albums, productions for other artists and much more under his belt, one of hip-hop’s hardest working men is gearing up to release his 5th solo studio album next Tuesday (18th).

It’s been fun watching Statik’s reputation grow from a bubbling-under producer to one of hip-hop’s premiere acts behind the boards, and it appears most of the genre feel the same way; features are beyond plentiful here, with appearances from Raekwon, Joey Bada$$, Black Thought, Talib Kweli, Blu, Joell Ortiz, Mac Miller, Flatbush Zombies, Bun B, Prodigy, Action Bronson and many, many more in what is a fantastically-stacked lineup. Of course, there are several producers/DJs who tend to get a slew of guest spots on their albums (Khaled, Drama etc.) but given their tendency to hire predominantly mainstream or ‘pop rappers’, it’s refreshing to get Statik projects that are generally full to the brim with MCs that do the genre justice. Stream the full project over at NPR below, and be sure to support next week if you’re a fan.

Snowgoons-The Legacy ft. Esoteric, Ill Bill, Reks, Reef The Lost Cauze & more

Another drop from the Snowgoons’ Dynasty album, and although it’s not a proper video, it does contain the audio and that’s the main thing!

Expect classic ‘Goons’ production here with a huge and impressive group of features. Continuing in the same vein as the previous leaks, The Legacy showcases the long list of contacts that Snowgoons can call on upon for a favour, and it results in another hard-hitting track that has me looking forward to their most ambitious effort yet.

Featuring: Esoteric, Ill Bill, Godilla, Fredro Starr (of Onyx), Sicknature, Punchline,
Reks, Thirstin Howl the 3rd, Planetary (of Outerspace), Virtuoso, Maylay Sparks, Swann, Sav Killz, M-Dot & Reef The Lost Cauze

Knowledge Medina ft. Soul Theory and Reks-Forever

Damn, this is the definition of smooth right here. Lots of piano helps keep things superbly mellow and it’s exactly this type of instrumental which really suits each emcee’s laid back flows. This is without doubt a track which can be enjoyed by everyone from hardcore hip-hopper to mainstream part-timer and all in between.

K. Vincent ft. Reks-What Would You Do

Being the world class writers we are, we get sent so much from upcoming emcees that it isn’t always possible to put on everything we get into our inboxes and therefore most of what I get around to listening to is dependent on work-load, recommendations and featured artists. This falls into the later category, I clicked play on this for the Reks feature but K. Vincent has a confident, listenable flow and the boom-bap yet soulful production on this makes for a track with lots of replay value. Shame it’s a bit on the short side but recommended as a tidy little piece of hip-hop nonetheless.

This Music Is Too Mainstream

In order to be a great writer, you have to do a lot of reading. I don’t particularly claim to achieve either of these, but what I do know is that as a feature writer, you never know when inspiration is going to hit you. It’s actually been seven months since my last article. Yet before that, I churned out six in as many months by this time last year.

Hardly the cornerstone of consistency, I hear.

Reks-Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme [Album Review]

“Reks’ third offering in the shape of Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme delivers to the underground fan with a range of subject matter, on-point rhymes, lyrical dexterity and Reks’ best selection of beats to date.”

The artist:

Born Corey Isaiah Christie in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Reks dropped out of college to pursue his dream in hip-hop. After taking the Boston underground scene by storm, Reks landed a deal with Landspeed Records who delivered his now decade-old debut Along Came The Chosen in 2001. The success which followed gave touring opportunities alongside respected emcees including Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Redman, De La Soul and his idol KRS-One. Reks’ second effort Grey Hairs (2008) is frequently cited as a classic amongst underground heads spearheaded by the impeccable Say Goodnight with legendary producer DJ Premier.

Reks-Cigarettes ft. Lil Fame [Video]

From my favourite album of the year Reks drops us some new visuals for the poignant Cigarettes with M.O.P. stalwart Lil Fame.

Reks and Fame trade verses tackling their addiction to those cancer sticks over Lil Fame’s smooth, delicate board work. The video itself captures that underground struggle we so frequently associate with Reks and helps add a little depth and understanding of the track’s subject matter.

If you keep your eyes peeled too, you’ll notice Reks loses his beard for one of the video scenes. Cop the excellent Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme right now.

Reks-Why Cry ft. Styles P

Latest release from Reks’ upcoming LP Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme dropping March 8th.

Reks tears apart a screechy Alchemist beat, whilst The Ghost’s vocals are always welcome in dragging a joint deep down into the gutter. Certainly a head-nodder this one, but was always going to have to go some to top the lead single.

Go take a listen to the album before you buy over at Amazon. Absolutely mouthwatering.

Reks-Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme Preview

As a big fan of the Lawrence, Massachusetts emcee needless to say I’ve been hankering after this since it was first announced. We’ve already heard the opening track, 25th Hour, with Premo lacing a delicious piano-loop for Reks to spit his trademark razor-sharp, conscious lyricism.

For those as eager as me, you can now preview the album track by track over at Amazon. With production from Premo, Pete Rock, Nottz, Statik, Alchemist, Sha Money XL and Hi-Tek the album is, and sounds, simply irresistible.

Make sure you go out and support real hip-hop on March 8th.

Reks-25th Hour (Produced DJ Premier) Video

And with this video Reks cements his DJ Premier-produced cut as the lead single to his upcoming R.E.K.S (Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme) album due to drop March 8th!

Producers include Premier himself, Pete Rock, Hi Tek, Alchemist, Nottz, Sha Money XL, Sean C & LV, Fizzy Womack and the ever-present Statik Selektah.

Oh, and this is ill as shit. Audio over at iTunes.

Reks-25th Hour (Prod. DJ Premier)

First off, this is just a radio rip. But this is too insane to withhold from you good people.

Assuming this is from Reks’ upcoming album R.E.K.S. and yes this was the one track I was most looking forward to. You can listen for yourself below, but where Premo usually steals the limelight on anything he touches, Reks kills this. F*ck a Nas/Premo collaboration album, this is where it’s at.

Reks-In Between The Lines 2 [Mixtape]

Been waiting on this for ages. Reks, one of the hardest-working, most gifted emcees in the underground scene right now, drops us for free his latest mixtape in preparation for his upcoming Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme album. Reks teams up with DJ Green Lantern, DJ Ill Will and frequent collaborator Statik Selektah to bring us this release, and boasts features from La Coka Nostra’s Slaine, OTU favourites Reef The Lost Cauze, Termanology, Sha Stimuli and many more.

I’m still checking this out but Reks goes in on this and there are some absolute bangers to accompany his razor-sharp lyricism.

Reks, Sha Stimuli & Reef The Lost Cauze-Get Rowdy

OMG. Add Rugged Man to this collaboration and you literally have my favourite underground lineup.

Quite often I find with Reks that his lyricism is streets ahead of his beat selection, but this is spot on. The beat has strong similarities to the rolling baseline that Premo used on Nas’ NY State Of Mind and is adequately heavy to keep the powerful delivery of Reks and Reef in check. It’s unusual to hear Stimuli over such a hard hitting baseline, but not for one second does he let it pass him by, switching up his flow whilst the instrumental drops in and out. Not that I condone drug abuse or anything, but you’d be a fool to miss out on this pure hip-hop ecstasy.

Termanology & Reks Freestyle

Two of my favourite underground MC’s wax lyrical over an assortment of beats accompanied by visuals.

Term & Statik’s 1982 is out now and can be picked up here.

Stay tuned for Reks’ In Between Lines 2 Mixtape dropping any time soon!

Wonderful Weekend Wonders

<— Kool G Rap holding a bullet in his teeth. Why not?

I’m going away this weekend to the city they named the big apple after (after Amsterdam sold it to the UK). So, with beer in hand, I’ll leave you with a few drops from over the past few days for you to enjoy in my absence. I’ve obviously got a joint with G Rap on, I’ve got some new Reks from his upcoming mixtape, some new Joell Ortiz (standard) and a revamped version of an AZ classic.

Hit the jump for the links and a bit of pre-match analysis.

Reks – Self-Titled [Video]

Lots of new Reks to get excited about. This is the official video from his upcoming In Between The Lines 2 mixtape hosted by DJ Green Lantern, DJ Ill Will & Statik Selektah. Then we’ve got his Teaser EP before followed by his next studio album R.E.K.S. (Rhymatic Eternal King Supreme).

Reks continues to be one of those cats out at the moment who isn’t afraid to take a different angle on things. His passion and innovation makes it easy to see why he’s one of those currently running the underground scene.

It’s great to witness the evolution of an artist. And his beard…

Reks-This Or That [Video]

Here we have some visuals for Rek’s controversial track This Or That from his mixtape In Between The Lines 2.

I am yet to watch but I’m sure, as with anything Reks puts his mind to, it’s laced with hunger and passion.

Audio here.

Reks - This Or That

Highly rated and hungry Reks pulls no punches here over a Statik Selektah production. Shots are fired in all directions and in fact reminds me of The One from his classic LP Grey Hairs and also strikes of similarities with 50′s ‘industry diss’ How To Rob from before the turn of the century.

This is from his upcoming EP which serves as a teaser for his 2011 album Rhymatic Eternal King Supreme. And of course he’s got a Premo beat!

Quest Tha Young'n / Reks / Reef The Lost Cauze / Ghetto

Quest is so underground that, as you might tell, I struggled for a picture here.

This is from Quest’s album Quest For Greatness which can be obtained now. Some of my favourite underground MC’s (Reks & Reef) on this one and I was pleased to see them bringing the heat as I expected.

Caution: Mind The Gap

I was in bed last night pondering upon a question I had been asked by @RupeshB: Who did I think was the most consistently on point rapper throughout their career? The answer I gave couldn’t have been a freshman MC (hell even I could be consistent for five minutes) and therefore had to be someone who had seen the changes in the demands of the genre; Someone who had spanned the 90’s and 00’s; Someone who had not necessarily cemented his stature in the hip-hop hall of fame; Merely someone who, throughout their career, has consistently brought a high standard of rapping ability time and time again and yet is still doing it to this very day.

Quick Throwback: Reks / DJ Premier

After a pretty hectic evening out with the OTU team I thought I had better jump on and hold the fort down a bit before the rest of our beloved colleagues surface from the carnage.

Quick one here from the heavily underrated Reks and this time, for once, I’m not throwing back too far. Say Goodnight is the underground hit from Reks’ critically acclaimed 2008 Grey Hairs album. rated this as their 3rd best track of the year and it’s easy to see where they were coming from.

This is in my top 5 Premo beats of all time. Period. Reks goes in and his passion for hip-hop stands up against any artist past or present. I guarantee if you download this it will be ‘raping your iTunes’ for weeks to come.

Another underground rapper for your ears - Skyzoo (who has received props from the likes of Jay-Z and Nas) has been on his grind for a few years now, generating a buzz within the underground community.

Having moderate success as an independent artist, Skyzoo will be releasing his debut album The Salvation, which is set to be released on the 29th of September via Jamla Records, founded by Grammy-Award winning producer 9th Wonder.
