Ludacris-#IDGAF (Mixtape)

ludafr
The backlash when Luda ‘turned pop’ last year was pretty strong, and he’s back with this offering, compiling tracks he’s been releasing every Friday for the past few weeks with some new, unheard efforts.

He’s definitely cashed that Fast and Furious 6 money early here, as a raft of big names are out with assists. Features include Young Jeezy, Chris Brown, Meek Mill, Swizz Beatz, Pusha T, Mac Miller and French Montana; essentially, a who’s who of guest artists in hip-hop over the last 18 months. There are some strong names behind the board too, with recent Roc Nation signee DJ Mustard, Mike Will Made It and Bangladesh amongst the contributors, and the signs point towards a solid mainstream hip-hop release, and hopefully it’s one that comes without the dance-pop work he’d previously released.

Ludacris-Rest Of My Life ft. Usher and David Guetta

The features on this tell you absolutely everything you need to know about this track. Luda’s struggling for sales in a difficult environment nowadays, and given that he’s not likely to lyrically compete with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, he’s gone the other way with a watered-down pop track.

It’s tough to criticise him as he’s rarely put out overtly mainstream-focused music, instead hovering the grey area that precedes that style, and now he’s looking to swell his bank account by making the full jump. The production is a predictable Guetta number, a pop track with lashings of heavy synths, whilst the Usher hook ensures the teenage girls take notice and have something to sing into their hairbrushes. I will literally never play this track again as I have no interest in it, but it’ll be a huge hit for sure.

John Legend and Ludacris-Tonight (Best You Ever Had)

Though it’s only from the soundtrack of the upcoming Think Like A Man film, it’s always great to get some new John Legend, and it certainly helps when it’s one of his better tracks in a long time.

Opening with in an atmospheric and drifty manner, there’s an instantly smooth vibe pouring out of this one, and whilst the song does shift into a more pop/R&B realm with the percussion and additional elements, it retains enough of that initial airy quality to give it a distinctive flavour. Legend’s vocals are never in doubt, and here he actually does a good job of stifling his natural passion and intensity, instead opting for a more structurally sound effort that still showcases his wonderful talent. Definitely worth a listen, and look out for it on iTunes on Tuesday.

Ludacris - Bada Boom (Big Sean & Drake Diss) [Video]

Luda returns to our screens with the visuals to his much talked about (somewhat delayed) response/diss to Big Sean and Drake questioning his use of the hashtag flow. It’s a good reminder of what Ludacris is actually capable of when he’s got some fire in the belly, I haven’t heard him this heated since he decided to Stomp on T.I.

The video itself is pretty decent, paying homage to The Fifth Element with the opening sequence – instead of war, the videos this benevolent woman sees are a collection of the biggest diss records of the last 20 years or so. If there was any doubt to Ludacris’ intentions with this song, there shouldn’t be after seeing this video; he feels pretty strongly about this! No idea why he’s waited a year to get this off his chest though.

Ludacris-1.21 Gigawatts: Back To The First Time (Mixtape)

Ludacris returns to the hip-hop scene with a brand new mixtape, and slots right back into the game with a mixtape stacked with some of the biggest names in today’s scene on both features and production.

It’s fair to say Luda’s been a little underwhelming in recent years, and though his output has been slowed in that time period, he’s not been the ‘feature killer’ he was previously known to be, and rightfully many feel his slot has been filled by many others (Big Sean, for one). However, he’s never one to count out and on his day he’s undoubtedly an excellent rapper with a lot of versatility. Hopefully this tape thrusts him back into the upper echelons of hip-hop, and you can grab the project for free below.

R&B Fridays: Episode 112

Running a little late than usual this week, but it’s here and that’s what counts. An interesting lineup once again this week, with the old-school, the current game, and newcomers all represented in this diverse edition.

Three posts to recap on from the week gone by: Yasmin offered a preview of her addictive, 90s-inspired new single, Chris Brown released a brand new 21-track mixtape, and finally a remix of Estelle’s most recent single.

Click below for this week’s tasty instalment.

R&B Fridays: Episode 106

Some really interesting remixes this week, with the works of R&B poster boys Drake and Frank Ocean undergoing treatment from their peers. Of course, there’s a sprinkling of original material too with a range of styles represented.

A fair bit to recap on from the week gone by: a James Blake and Drake mashup mixtape, a very enjoyable R&B throwback from will.i.am, strong slow jam from Lloyd’s upcoming album, brand new material from Drake, and for some reason a video for Enrique, Usher and Lil’ Wayne’s collab and Britney’s latest single. R&B Fridays: Episode 105

Being on time is the new being late. Or something like that. Gone with a slightly different approach for this week’s episode, as I sympathise with the mainstream folk who come looking for some party/chart tracks, and leave empty handed. I’ve chucked in a few artists/tracks I don’t particularly like, but will certainly go down well with the mainstreamers, and of course there’s still a healthy dose of music that’s actually good too.

Onto the recap from this week, and three noteworthy posts: Frank Ocean dropped some highly anticipated visuals for Novacane, Katy Perry released an entertaining video for her latest single, and most importantly The Weeknd dropped off some superb new material.

I’ve turned up late to the party once again, so I’m not going to mess you around with a long intro here. That’s helped by only having one relevant and noteworthy post from the week gone by, that being Erin Christine’s latest single.

Ludacris-F5 (Furiously Dangerous) ft. Slaughterhouse & Claret Jai

It’s often discussed who’d make a great 5th addition to the lyrical machine that is Slaughterhouse, and it’d be hard to argue against the case for Ludacris to be this fabled 5th member (not that there’s any chance Slaughterhouse are looking to recruit!). So seeing this collaboration immediately piqued my interest, what with Luda’s penchant for mind-altering guest verses, and Slaughterhouse….well, being Slaughterhouse.

So the result we find here is 5 great verses filled with many a clever punchline, over a pretty decent beat. What I didn’t expect was the awful chorus, which quite simply makes my head hurt. Shame about this annoyance, because this would make a brilliant song with a better thought out hook. Definitely worth picking up by you hip hop lovers out there regardless of this though, as you won’t really find a better bunch of lyricists who are still relevant in the game today.

DJ Khaled-Welcome To My Hood (Remix) ft. Ludacris, T-Pain, Busta Rhymes, Mavado, Twista, Birdman, Ace Hood, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Bun B, Game & Waka Flocka

Is this the longest title we’ve ever seen on OTU? It’s certainly up there! DJ Khaled enlists a plethora of rappers to take on the remix of his recent(ish) single, Welcome To The Hood.

I can’t be the only one, but I’m pretty tired of these remixes by him where he just sticks a load of guest verses on it and expects a hit. Having said that I really wanted to hear the Game verse on this and thus had to check it out. I’m also pretty sure there’s a lot of you out there who still lap this stuff up, so who am I to hate on it?

Summary: I don’t like this and I didn’t like the original either, you might though.

R&B Fridays: Episode 83

To me, the early hours of ‘Saturday’ count as Friday, so welcome to the first on-time R&B Friday in a few weeks!

Not a great deal to recap on this week, with the only notables being another official remix to Lloyd’s Lay It Down, and an all-British collaboration from Alesha Dixon and Jay Sean. However, it’s more than made up for with this week’s episode: with almost 20 tracks from the likes of Trey Songz, Pitbull and many more, there’s lots to enjoy and keep you going until next week.

Want some? Come get some.

R&B Fridays: Episode 81

Will R&B Fridays ever be on time? That’s the question.

I’ve more than compensated though, throwing in almost 20 tracks for you to enjoy this week. There’s no skimping on the big names either, as there are some strong contributions from some of the bigger stars in the R&B/pop world. No real recap this week as the music industry has all but shut down, though the Alicia Keys version of Devil In A New Dress is a must-download.

MTV Announces The 'Hottest MCs In The Game'

This list loses more respect year-by-year. If you’re not familiar, they pick the ‘top 10′ mainstream MCs based on ‘rhyme skill, flow, buzz, commercial success, business ventures, Web presence and cultural influence’.

Realistically, they don’t. Some extended thoughts on the list are available after the click, as well as a revised list using the line-up they picked. I’m not going to dare to go into who I think should be on the list, as we’ll be here all day…

Hip-Hop Collaboration Catch Up

Lots of big hip-hop acts involved in the three collaborations here, which I put on the backburner slightly.

All of them are solid, with the Diddy/Ross track boasting a relaxing beat that will win many admirers. The Busta/50 track has some real potential, with a slightly dark feel that suits all involved parties nicely. The final track is a remix of this one and has some great features, the highlight being Luda and Twista’s contributions.

R&B Fridays: Episode 63

Lots of great stuff this week, swelling it up to delicious proportions. Before you slam your face into the meal, get accquainted with these appetisers: Dirty Money and Drake collaborate, the announcement of Bruno Mars’ album, lots from newcomer Justin Michael, Usher’s newest video, Sean Garrett’s Inkwell mixtape, the video/audio for 3OH!3′s latest single, Cee-Lo’s amazing new song, and the final version of a Drake reference track.

Plenty of stuff there, and plenty of stuff below. This has to go down as one of the strongest R&B Fridays in recent memory too, there’s nothing I wouldn’t recommend from this week’s batch. Entrance below.

Justin Michael/Bruno Mars - Her World Goes On [Video]

You may remember this song, Ajay in fact posted it in an R&B Friday back in March! This is produced and co-written by a guy called Justin Michael, who is signed to Ultra Records (home of Deadmau5, Pitbull & Tiesto among others).

Anyway this really is a fantastic song, which is proven by the fact that I still love it now. You can grab this here (if you were foolish enough to miss out on it the first time), also click below to see two new fantastic tracks by Justin Michael, where he’s remixed Ciara’s track Ride & Jason Derulo’s Ridin’ Solo.

Flo Rida/Ludacris/Gucci Mane - Why You Up In Here

The very definition of mainstream hip-hop right here (I sense Murray has just felt a twinge of anger). If you’re a fan of any of these artists then you’ll very much like this song, that’s all I’m going to say.

Sunday's Classic Collabo: Nas/Jadakiss/Ludacris - Made You Look [Remix]

The original to this is quite possibly one of the most underrated hip-hop anthems of modern times. The lead single from Nas’ God’s Son album, this was the perfect follow up to his previous album Stillmatic, which proved his renaissance was not a fluke. This track was just the perfect mix of NY rap and a track to go crazy to in the club, so what better than enlisting feature killers Jadakiss and Ludacris for the remix!?

Grab this rare and epic track below, and also look over to the left here to check out this absolute classic video of them performing it live.

R&B Fridays: Episode 58

Let’s be honest here, my comeback was never going to feel complete until I dropped one of these. Indi’s done a cracking job over the last few weeks, keeping the R&B Fridays standards high and giving you all your weekly dose of R&B.

Taking 3 weeks away from new music (it’s taking forever to catch up…) has given me a clear head and fresh perspective on each of the tracks this week (admittedly, I’ve become less critical as a result!), so click on and grab some R&B from big names and newcomers alike. Do it. NOW.

R. Kelly/Ludacris - Tongues

Another one to warm you up for tonight’s imminent R&B Friday, this is also a very good track that I’m sure will be liked by many of you. Produced by Bangladesh (who produced Lil’ Wayne’s A Milli hit), Ludacris provides a show stealing verse.

Consistency is the key, and like last week there are 18 tracks for you to check out. Pretty much full of names you should be familiar with by now,  giving everything a go this week is made a lot easier in that respect.

Savour these episodes-next week could be my last R&B Friday for a few weeks as I’m going away. What/who will substitute for them you ask? Wait and see. Still one more to go after this one though!
