Throwback Thursdays Vol 42

Lawrence Kris Parker is undeniably a pioneer of hip-hop and a true father of the genre. Although I happen to feel KRS-One is somewhat overrated as an MC, one thing I can’t deny, aside from his contribution, is his ability to craft a banger.

In anticipation of his upcoming collaboration project Godsville with Showbiz, here’s a throwback to the first time these two greats chopped it up together, way back in 1993.

Showbiz & KRS One-We Love This

Second leak from the upcoming collaboration project between D.I.T.C. legend Showbiz and Bronx stalwart Krs-One. I was disappointed with the first drop from the album which is why I’ve been sleeping on this project a little bit. This sees Show return to form on the boards with a piano-laced yet hard-hitting baseline while Kris does a job with the vocals. Expect reminiscent rhymes longing for a return to the 90′s whilst criticising the current state of the genre and you won’t go far wrong on this.

For anyone who cares, I’ve been bumping a lot of Return Of The Boom Bap recently.

DJ Premier, Krs-One, Grand Puba

First single from Premo’s Year Round Records Presents: Get Used To Us which can be copped over at iTunes right now.

As expected, Premo comes in with his trusty formula which, as we’ve seen this year with the fantastic Bun B Let ‘Em Know and Fat Joe’s I’m Gone, still sounds current twenty years on. This, however painful to admit, is a fairly forgettable effort on production and as Krs is in my overrated MC’s list, this won’t be one I revisit much.

DJ Premier-5% ft. Krs-One & Grand Puba

I still hold high hopes for the album though (for God’s sake people, it’s Premo we’re talking about here!) so hit the jump and you can stream the entire album before you purchase. A try before you buy if you will.

Sunday's Classic Collabo: Dr. Dre/RBX/Krs-One/B-Real/Nas/Scarface

Off the very first release from Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment (back in 1996)! It was a compilation cd that was criticised a fair bit at the time. This was referenced a few years later on tracks such as Forgot About Dre and Still Dre: “When my last cd was out you wasn’t bumpin me&Ladies, they pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off, How? My last album was The Chronic“.

Anyway, I had only became aware of this track recently thanks to Murray! But I’m told this is a track that was one of the standouts from that compilation. Titled East Coast/West Coast Killas and with a lineup containing RBX, KRS-One, B-Real, Nas & Scarface, it was a retort to those in the media (and fans) perpetuating a West Coast/East Coast beef that culminated with 2Pac & Biggie’s murder.

Quick Blast: RZA, KRS-One and True Master

Quick blast for a quick track, clocking in at just under 3 minutes. From KRS and True Master’s upcoming collaborative album, RZA provides a guest verse for a vintage sounding track that will keep hip-hop heads happy.

KRS-One, MC Lyte and AlBeBack-16, 17, 18

A pretty unexpected collab that I stumbled across the other day. Two of the older guard hook up with upcoming rapper AlBeBack for a pretty nice lyrical track that brings a nice raw production along for the ride. Hip-hop heads will definitely want to grab this one.

Sunday's Classic Collabo: Sway & King Tech - The Anthem

The very definition of classic collaboration right here, this infamous track features: RZA, Tech N9ne, Eminem, Xzibit, Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, Jayo Felony, Chino XL & KRS-One. Kind of forgot about Classic Collabo this week, so hope this makes up for it! Amazing that this amount of stars came through and did this track, let alone a video! Check out the crazy visuals, and grab this vintage track below.

Throwback Thursdays Vol 18

Who thinks Fat Joe is wack? Think again.

It is understandable to form this opinion for any artist who you have to overlook their past six efforts to see the diamond in the rough. Unfortunately Joe is within this category, an exemplified instance of ‘selling out’ via the popular medium of ‘ringtone rap’. However under the alias ‘Fat Joe da Gangsta’, Joe wasn’t always like this…

Lupe x LeBron x Kobe x KRS-One

This is rather hilarious. The two NBA heavyweights don’t actually speak in this one (this is from a series of these puppet videos) but Lupe’s rap is funny. FYI, KRS-One plays Santa.

BET Hip-Hop Awards Cyphers

I’d been waiting on these for a while, and I’m glad to say they don’t disappoint. The video here is the three freestyles from Eminem, Mos Def and Black Thought. It has to be said that all 3 absolutely tear this up. Click below to see the other two cyphers, which include Joe Budden, Wale, KRS-One and others.

Underground Hip-Hop Part 5

Enzo x TampaPro
Click below for the 5th instalment of the revered UGHH series. As always, there are both new artists and slightly more established artists that you may have missed.

We haven’t had one of these with individual tracks in a while, and there’s a lot of stuff that I’ve been sitting on, so this is a Special Edition with 13 tracks. Thank me later.
