Gil Scott-Heron and Cookin' Soul-The Revolution Is Being Televised Mixtape

Inevitably, there will be a ton of tribute tracks and mixtapes surfacing in the aftermath of the untimely passing of Gil, but if you’re to check out one you could do an awful lot worse than go with Cookin’ Soul’s effort. They’re simply superb at putting remixes together, and I have faith they’ll do justice to both the quality of Heron’s back catalogue, and justice to the legacy of the man himself.

I expect many of the younger heads will be largely disaffected by the passing of Gil having had minimal exposure to his music, hence I’d recommend this should be checked out by those of you in that category, as inevitably Cookin’ Soul will put a modern twist onto his many classics. Free grab below.

Tech N9ne-Bad Season [Mixtape]

The legendary Tech N9ne (not heard of him? Well he probably makes more money from his shows than most of your favourite rappers!) gives us a delightful new mixtape.

I haven’t heard this mixtape (which is hosted by DJ Whoo Kid & DJ Scream) yet, but judging by his past material I expect this to be very good. With guest appearances from esteemed names like Jay Rock, Travis Barker, Cookin Soul and Dr. Dre, there’s a little something for everyone here.

Cookin’ Soul x DJ Drama – Gangsta Grillz: History In The Making [Mixtape]

Well today’s been a bit mixtape crazy, first we had The Game, then Wale and now this. Cookin’ Soul have consistently come through with brilliant remixes to your favourite tracks time and time again and DJ Drama has brought you some of the best mixtapes over the last few years, so what better sight is there than to see them link up? That’s a rhetorical question btw.

Rick Ross – B.M.F. (Cookin' Soul Remix)

You should know by now that Cookin’ Soul are awesome. Here they’ve remixed Ross’ street hit, B.M.F. to great effect, as is the case with every remix they do, I prefer this to the original!

Drake's Light Up: Cookin' Soul Remix

Those talented Cookin’ Soul boys are putting together a remixed version of Drake’s Thank Me Later, and you can thank us later for bringing you the first leak from it.

I’m really liking this. I did enjoy the original Light Up, and it’s one of the strongest tracks on Thank Me Later, so Cookin’ Soul would have to go some way to better that-and they have. Adding in a Biggie verse, they’ve also switched up the beat to fantastic effect, keeping the driving percussion of the original but supplementing it with much more on the melody front.

Definitely one for those of you that enjoyed the original and, surprisingly, one for the hip-hop heads too.

Jay-Z & Game Blends by Cookin’ Soul

Cookin’ Soul and Don Cannon present their latest mash-up/blends project, this time taking Game and Jay-Z and putting their spin on them. I have a sneaking suspicion this could be rather good, and I usually steer clear from these sorts of things (Mick Boogie/Terry Urban projects aside!). Hip-hop fans looking for something a little different in this quiet period should give this a go.
