Colin Munroe - The Fight of My Life ft. Pusha T [Video]

The extremely talented, and an OTU favourite, Colin Munroe brings us the visuals to an excellent collaboration with Pusha T, which is off his recent mixtape/album, #UnsungHero.

And that’s exactly what Colin Munroe is…somewhat frustratingly he’s not as well known as he should be by now, but I’m sure that’ll change in the not-to-distant future he carries on with this kind of form.

You can grab UnsungHero right here.

Drake-Where Were You ft. Colin Munroe and Dawn Richard

I picked this up a week ago, and frankly dismissed it as another Drake demo that warranted minimal attention. My mistake, as the version I had didn’t credit Colin Munroe-if it had, I’d have known to expect much more. Worth noting that a Colin and Drake collaboration from 2010 has the same name, but is not the same song.

Whilst I don’t doubt this will still end up as a demo for someone else, it’s up there with one of his better reference tracks. Drake opens with a wistful verse that harks right back to his So Far Gone days, before Munroe jumps in on an airy, drifty hook that’ll stick around your head for quite some time. Dawn Richard comes through with a whispery and tender verse of her own, before Drake closes off with a rapped verse. Four very distinct vocal deliveries from three artists, and they’re all set to a wintery production filled full of melancholy yet with a speed of percussion that belies the mood of the track. A likeable all-rounder with an inescapably addictive hook.

Colin Munroe-Unsung Hero (Album)

It’s been a long time since we had a new project from Colin, and whilst he’s released small bits of material over the last couple of years, it’s great to have him back dropping off something full-length.

Arguably, he didn’t quite capitalise on his huge buzz back in 2009-10, but that doesn’t seem to have hindered his reputation within the industry; features on this include RZA, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Pusha T, Cassie and more. His relative inactivity has seemingly led to his sound being a little less unique, given the slew of eclectic artists who’ve broken out in recent years, but a quick listen to this tape shows that few have the same level of command over all of the genres he tries to cover. A man who has a great talent for melodies, here’s to hoping this tape revives his career, and that there’s more to come. Download and/or stream below.

R&B Fridays: Episode 138

Fridays were always overrated anyway.

Four posts to catch up on from the last week: Usher hooked up with Diplo for an enjoyable return to the spotlight, Ed Sheeran and Yelawolf came together for a free 4-track EP, Raheem DeVaughn made many folks’ Valentine’s Day with a new mixtape, and finally we were treated to an excellent slowed-down remix of Drake and The Weeknd’s Crew Love.

Colin Munroe – The Revox Suite

From the man himself:

“Without further ado, I present the completed Revox Suite – Vol. 1 for your listening pleasure. In addition to the Sky Ferreira & La Roux X Nicki Minaj revoxes that you might have heard already, there are also vocal remixes of songs by the Jackson 5, Paramore and Bob Dylan.

The Revox Suite sounds pretty unlike any project I’ve ever heard. I hope it encourages more people to think about bending and breaking musical barriers. Thank you for indulging the Unsung Hero in another one of my adventures. Now on to the next one.”

Asher Roth and Nottz-Dontcha Wanna Be Video

The happy, positive vibes that coarsed through the veins of the audio are on full display here in the video for this great track.

No sign of Colin Munroe, but Asher and Nottz look to be having lots of fun throughout, adding some simple imagery to their personal yet upbeat raps. One of those videos that’ll brighten your day for sure: Asher’s robot at the end is pretty funny.

Audio is grabbable (new word?) here.

Asher Roth and Nottz-Dontcha Wanna Be (with Colin Munroe)

Nice! Loved the first track from this upcoming EP, and before I’d even listened to this one I loved it. Why? The following mathematically-proven, ancient equation: Asher’s raps + Nottz beat + Colin’s vocals = Winner.

Once again, another superb production is thrown up, this time being a really happy, positively tinged one as opposed to the (equally good) heavy hip-hop stylings of their previous track. As ever, this upbeat style works in Asher’s favour as it helps project his personality much more, whilst Nottz once again surprises with his proficiency on the mic. Great hook from Colin Munroe makes this a fully enjoyable track from top-to-bottom.

Oddly, I’m not sure who to credit this to as I’m sure its from their upcoming collabo album but was sent to me as an individual track from Nottz’s upcoming solo album. Either way, grab it below.

Colin Munroe-Bulletproof Monster (Nicki Minaj and La Roux Revox)

As Colin’s reputation soars, so does his ingenuity. He’s picked two great songs, meshed them with his own vocals and created a very likeable track: as Colin puts it, ‘it feels like I’ve created a musical Frankenstein. Fitting, I think. Enjoy this Bulletproof Monster‘.

Grabbing Nicki’s universally-praised (and show stealing) verse from Kanye’s recent Monster track, he’s certainly picked a captivating verse to weave around the unmistakable La Roux hook. It makes for a welcome refresh of both tracks, and serves to display Colin is just as talented behind the boards as he is with his vocals.

Colin Munroe - One (Sky Ferreira Revox)

A few words from Mr. Munroe himself:

Dear Friends & Family:

I’m emailing today to share the first installment from a new project I’m working on…The Revox Suite. If you remember my revox of Bob Dylan’s “Who Killed Davey Moore” off my Unsung Hero Mixtape then you get the idea. I wanted to create a series of remixes using (basically) only my voice.

First up is a revox of Sky Ferreira’s single, “One”. I had the pleasure of working with Sky on her upcoming LP (more on that later…) She has an amazing voice. Here’s a chance to hear “One” like you’ve never heard it before.

You can grab this track (for a limited time only) from here.

Colin Munroe - I Would Die 4 U (Prince Cover)

Exciting news for Colin Munroe fans, he’s getting back on his grind:

“I’ve been gone for a little while, but I’m still here. There were some things that needed dealing with and that dealing is almost done. I was intentionally not releasing any new solo material during that period, but that period is about to end. The story continues and so will the music. I hope you enjoy this small taste of what is to come. Don’t look away. Don’t think less of me.”

And here is some new music from him:

Novel/Joell Ortiz/Colin Munroe - Walking On Air

This track is seriously in danger of being overlooked in favour of a certain Kanye/Beyonce collabo that’s just dropped, which would be a real shame. R&B/Soul singer Novel is someone I’ve only just started to hear about and what I’ve been hearing has largely been pretty fantastic, this track being the best I’ve heard from him thus far.

Collaborating once again with Joell Ortiz, who provides a soothing verse to accompany this tribute to that special someone, Novel has given us a song that you can really just sit back and relax to. With Colin Munroe assisting with his vocals, you have a winner of a track right here.

Statik Selektah, Bun B, Wale and Colin Munroe-So Close, So Far Video

Didn’t really give this song the time it deserved when it first dropped, and have to say that will be changing as it’s actually quite good.

Chilled out Statik beat, very good lyricism in Bun/Wale’s verses, and another good hook from Colin makes for a nice track. Video is a good fit for the audio, and will definitely rediscover/discover the good vibes about this one.

Audio can be snatched here.

Slum Village and Colin Munroe Collaboration

This should excite most of you. Underground favourites Slum Village team up with one of the better upcoming talents in Colin Munroe. Colin always delivers great hooks, which tend to seamlessly cross borders between an indie, pop and soul sound, whilst Slum Vil’s credentials need little elaboration for those of you checking this one out.

A smooth and atmospheric beat provides the perfect backdrop for these guys to lay vocals down on, with some nice flows in the verses and a great hook as previously mentioned. This track could have a lot of crossover appeal, both across hip-hop and other genres.

Kidz In The Hall, Just Blaze and Colin Munroe Collab-Must Have!

Absolutely superb collaboration. Colin Munroe slays this hook, and Naledge drops some dope verses. The beat is a really good one too, and the overall uplifting and motivational feel of this track is definitely a likeable one. Just Blaze is credited with a feature on this track as his ‘alter ego’ Red 5ive, although it sounds like he’s only on backing vocals. Works for me though as he’s also a co-producer on it, and having Just on production in any capacity is always a good thing.

This is an all-rounder that will definitely suit a wide variety of tastes. Could be a really big hit too, if given the right promo, and gives me high hopes for the upcoming album.

Quick Blast: Bun B/88-Keys/Talib Kweli/Colin Munroe

Much like the other recent Bun-B track I posted (which also happened to feature Colin Munroe) this has a stellar line up. With 88-Keys and Talib Kweli assisting, you know it’s going to be pretty decent.

Statik Selektah/Bun B/Wale/Colin Munroe

New leak from Statik’s upcoming 100 Proof (The Hangover) album, judging by a previous ‘Classic Collabo’ post of mine and another recent feature heavy leak by Statik, you know this is going to be good. If that isn’t enough for you then the fact that Bun B, Wale and Colin Munroe all feature on this track should have your attention.

This track is pretty mellow which is perfect for Wale’s flow and with Colin Munroe’s hook, makes this a great track to chill to. Go get it below:

The Catch-Up

drake-cudi
As I posted earlier this week, there has been a build-up of tracks in my library that I simply haven’t had the time to post over the last 2 weeks. Well, this is the final clearout from the last 2 days, after which I’m back on sentry duty and posting it on the minute I get it. This is a pretty nice collection too, with Drake, Sadé (that’s right!), Rev Run (that’s right!), Wale and more making appearances.

Le Da Soul: 20 Years of De La Soul

le-da-soul-cover-450x450
Now that I’ve finally had some time, a quick glance over my inbox threw up this little gem that Mick Boogie sent across. It’s the latest project from himself and Terry Urban (from a long line of classic mixtapes, go here for some) and is a tribute to the veterans of hip-hop, De La Soul. There are some great names contributing on this, including Talib Kweli, Camp Lo, Colin Munroe and many more.

Definitely worth grabbing, and anyone who owns one of these boys’ previous projects will know that this is going to be something special.
