R&B Fridays: Episode 119

This week has seen some superb music video releases in the pop, R&B and soul world and that mini-revival continues with a solid offering in this week’s R&B instalment.

The aforementioned videos include heart-warming visuals from Musiq Soulchild, uplifting scenes from Patrick Stump and Lupe Fiasco, an intrictate, thought-provoking effort from Frank Ocean, and finally a sharp, confident performance from The-Dream in one of his best releases to date.

Caught up with all the above? Your eyes may need a rest, but your ears await the musical delights that lie below.

Chiddy Bang-Peanut Butter and Swelly Mixtape

New work from the Chiddy Bang duo, coming through with a 15-track mixtape to satisfy the fans. Anyone else feel like they really missed the boat on dropping their album? This time last year their buzz was enormous, and they’ve possibly waited a little too long to release that debut album.

We’ll see how that pans out, but for now be sure to grab this mixtape and see if they can resurrect that hype. From a quick glance at the tracklist, I recognised Baby Roulette and Heatwave, though it appears the version of Heatwave on the tape has a few additional guests, namely Trae Tha Truth and frequent OFWGKTA collaborator Casey Veggies. Grab the mixtape below.

Chiddy Bang and Mac Miller-Heatwave

I’ve never claimed to be a die-hard Chiddy Bang fan (though I will claim to be a very early supporter back in 2009!), but now and again they come through with an undeniably superb track, and this is another.

From their upcoming Breakfast mixtape (should have dropped an album by now fellas!), Xaphoon does a great job on the beat with a soulful sample layered over a thumping percussion, resulting in a fundamentally hip-hop driven production that will surely satisfy both the hip-hop heads and mainstream fans alike. Verses are decent throughout too, as Mac Miller takes the win with another slick verse that really cements him as one of the in-form rappers of 2011 thus far. Having not really been a fan previously, he’s really won me over in recent months and I hope it continues.

Xaphoon Jones (of Chiddy Bang)-Mixtape Vol. 2

Can’t say I know a great deal about this, but I know there are a few Chiddy Bang fans and as the man behind the boards for the upcoming duo, this should interest you greatly.

He’s definitely a decent producer too, with some of the beats/remixes served up for Chiddy to rap on being very well chosen, and I hope that form continues here. A brief glance at the tracklist suggests he’s remixed some very well-known tracks from a wide range of genres, which should make this an interesting listen. Free download below.

Chiddy Bang ft. Train-Baby Roulette

Another new Chiddy Bang track now, after the one that was let loose last week. These guys are seriously my favourite duo in hip-hop at the minute.

Produced by Xaphoon Jones, it’s more of that electro upbeat Chiddy we’re used to hearing. Something is bugging me though, Xaphoon has sampled snippets from an early 90′s game (I’m thinking something on the Sega Megadrive) but I can’t quite put my finger on it, all suggestions are more than welcome! On the subject of the track itself, it’s actually promoting quite a serious subject, safe sex. So kudos for that as it’s quite a brave topic to approach and make a whole track on, so take note kids – Strap up.

Chiddy Bang-Rebel

I realise I’m a little bit late with this, so please forgive me. Chiddy Bang’s Xaphoon Jones leaked this on his twitter yesterday after hitting 10,000 followers on the social network.

It’s a demo that has been cut from their upcoming debut album Swelly Life. I’m a big fan of these guys, and I genuinely believe Xaphoon is one of the most underrated producers in the game. This joint has a little Latino feel to it, using a sped up sample, of which I can’t quite put my finger on (all suggestions welcome…).

You Me At Six and Chiddy-Rescue Me Video

Prior to this track, I was very unsure about these guys and didn’t really buy into their hype. It’s safe to say that’s all been turned on its head, as their newest single has a much more diverse, accessible sound that really commands attention.

Chiddy (of Chiddy Bang obviously) comes through with an absolutely superb feature slot here, taking charge of the song with a couple of superb storytelling verses. They’re intertwined with an anthemic pop-rock hook and solid pop-punk guitar work to create an all-round track that should find fans within the pop, hip-hop and alternative rock scenes.

The video is very captivating too, fleshing out the lyrical message with the mental afflictions of a boxer warming up for a big fight. The boxing theme really adds a tangibility to the track, and is supplemented nicely by the simple move of having the boxers mime the lyrics, something which isn’t done nearly as often as it should be in ‘actor’-centric videos. Definitely worth a watch.

Black Cards and Chiddy Bang-Club Called Heaven

An inventive vintage concept on this video accentuates the eclectic nature of the track nicely here. It’s got the feel of an old-time film nailed down, and throws in some good humour to make this an enjoyable watch.

Pretty good track too, which is certainly worth checking out. Not sure if  it’s actually been released yet, but you can catch a stream/review of it here.

The Knocks-Dancing With The DJ (Chiddy Bang Remix)

The Knocks are an interesting duo. Prior to this remix finding its way to me, I can’t say I’d heard of them but a little research told me they’re actually a pretty big deal in the music production world, and are quite highly regarded.

I can see why, as this slice of pop-dance-hip-hop music is very digestable. The production is ridiculously smooth, utilising a dance sensibility for the primary melodies without over-exerting it: they’re laid on softly, and surrounded by enough live instrumentation to give it an equal measure of organic matter. Throw in a catchy, singalong hook and you’ve got a sound that is absolutely perfect for the mainstream. Until it hits that status, it will certainly find a home as a ‘secret’ party track for the rest of us! A wholesome, high-quality track that will really turn some heads: You would be very, very foolish to miss this.

Big Sean and Chiddy Bang-Too Fake Video

The latest moving pictures from FF3 have arrived, and we’re treated to a bright, positive video that reflects Sean’s personality admirably. He seems very much in his element here, and oozes the charisma he seems to develop with every appearance. The post-production effects (specifically the vertical line wipes) are a bit annoying after a while, but it’s a good video otherwise.

Grab this track, and the rest of the mixtape, here.

Black Cards and Chiddy Bang-Club Called Heaven

Fall Out Boy’s hiatus/breakup doesn’t mean Pete Wentz has stopped making music. His new project, Black Cards, are streaming their new song on their website and it’s actually surprisingly good.

It’s a tough one to categorise, as it is probably a pop song but has some alternative and vintage touches to it that seperate it from being squeaky-clean pop. Hugely replayable and massively catchy, this could end up being a pretty decent project if they stick with this original style.

No downloads yet, but give the song a listen over here.

Chiddy Bang-The Good Life Video

A pretty decent video for a good song from Chiddy. Some nice variety in the scenes, with the essence of the track being captured accurately throughout (and ‘countered’ nicely by the use of a dustbin as a drum in the video!).

Audio can be ensnared from here.

2 New Chiddy Bang Tracks

One of them is from the upcoming The Preview EP, and another is a remix of Cee-Lo’s F*** You. Good Life was produced in tandem with Pharrell, a tangible indicator of just how far Chiddy have come in the last year or so.

Good Life is a really enjoyable track too, especially on the hook which meshes together a relaxed synth and light electro influences to create a memorable focus point. The F*** You remix is decent, though the changes to the beat aren’t quite the right ones in my view. It slows down the original significantly, which takes away some of its charm. Worth checking out to judge for yourself.

Chiddy Bang Remix Tinie Tempah's Pass Out

Ever since I heard the original, I hoped someone would actually take the beat and deliver some worthwhile raps. I would throw in a quip about someone bodying Tinie on his own beat, but even I could deliver better lyrics than he did. Maybe I will.

Anyway, turns out Chiddy Bang already did so, but having not got around to checking out their latest mixtape I hadn’t realised it yet. Nice work on this, and it’s infinitely better than the ludicrously written original.

Mixtape can be collected at the above link, or here for those of you who are unable to move your eyes upwards.

Chiddy Bang-Air Swell Mixtape

I had no idea until the other day that Chiddy Bang had blown up so much! I was put onto them in October, specifically the track Decline, and thought they weren’t bad, but certainly didn’t expect this rapid rise. The Swelly Express mixtape wasn’t too bad either, which is where the Opposite of Adults track originally came from I believe. It’s odd though, as I felt Decline and Slow Down were the best two tracks from it, although I can see why Opposite caught the attention of the mainstream.

Anyway, this is a new mixtape of theirs, although I haven’t checked the tracklisting to see if there’s any overlap with Express. Regardless, most new fans probably missed out on that mixtape, so atone for it and check this one out.

Chiddy Bang/MGMT

I’ve only just heard this song moments ago and had to get it up straight away – this is just so good. As you may have noticed yourself, it’s a remix of the MGMT song ‘Kids’.

I will post the audio for this track at a later date (haven’t got hold of it yet).

Ajay-182 Edit: Bringing this back up to the top as I’ve upped the .mp3 for y’all to enjoy.
