Slaughterhouse-My Life Video ft. Cee-Lo

Being Slaughterhouse’s most uplifting and feelgood song to date, many SH fans really didn’t take to this track on its release some time ago. I wasn’t one of those fans to be honest, and to me it was refreshing to hear some positivity from four talented rappers who’ve toiled away in the underground for the last decade, and are now finally getting their due.

The motivational Cee-Lo hook anchors this one, and again whilst its pop styling might not be to everyone’s taste, his powerful vocals are the best possible choice for a celebratory track. The raps are solid throughout, with a nice mix of biographical ‘come-up’ raps and a little braggadociosness, and whilst its not full of their typically aggressive, cutting raps, the flows are still strong from each member.

The video opens with an amusing Eminem feature, before launching into the energetic scenes with the Slaughterhouse quartet. Stylistically, there’s nothing here we haven’t seen before, and hence its an easy watch that fits in with the lively audio well, giving the rappers’ lighter side some much-needed video time. Their most mainstream-ready song to date, and one that hip-hop fans should still enjoy. Grab this on iTunes now.

Cee-Lo Green and Wiz Khalifa-Bright Lights, Bigger City Remix Video

When the original version of this track was released, it was undeniably a great listen and whilst it’s been hideously overplayed since, this video certainly offers a welcome refresh of the song.

This remix was originally premiered in a lyric video a few months back, whilst the original video was released months prior to that. This video is essentially the same as the original, with lots of bright cityscapes and nighttime scenery, though there are a few extra espionage-style scenes thrown in to this version. Of course, the Wiz appearance is a new addition too, though it’s done fairly unremarkably with his section being rather generic and somewhat uninspired. Can’t fault his actual verse too much though, as whilst it’s nothing groundbreaking, it slides onto the tricky production well enough. Worth a watch if you’re a fan of the original.

Cee-Lo Green and Wiz Khalifa-Bright Lights, Bigger City Remix

Seemingly the official remix, Wiz unexpectedly jumps onto Cee-Lo’s very enjoyable single from his recent Lady Killer album.

Although the video is essentially a glorified lyric video, it’s done in a pretty creative and unique way that gives it a little more than the usual lyric videos. I was a big fan of the original, particularly because of its marvellous production that has a real power and atmosphere about it.

Wiz comes through with a solid verse that fits nicely with the mood and vibe of the track, and the production seems to have been slightly tweaked too with the inclusion of an additional synth melody and slightly slower percussion. Worth a listen for fans of the original.

R&B Fridays: Episode 89

Genuine reason on the delay this week: I wasn’t happy with the amount of good quality material as of yesterday afternoon, but the R&B/pop world has delivered in the last 24 hours or so to make sure that situation has improved.

Not too much to recap on from the past week, with only the three related items: UK starlet Jodie Connor released her newest single, fellow homegrown upcomer Jaya released a new video featuring two prominent MCs, and Mike Posner let loose of official visuals for his collaboration with Lil’ Wayne.

Unlike recent weeks, there’s a pretty big recap on this week’s notable R&B/pop events: Yasmin previewed her new single, Tank came through with a new video, Timbaland’s #TimboThursdays rolled on, Trey Songz released the Love Faces video,  Miguel and Gilbere Forte combined for a fantastic effort, Diddy’s Dirty Money trio released an official mixtape, last week’s notable Grammy performances, Bruno Mars’ Grenade getting the Lil’ Wayne remix, and finally Erin Christine’s fantastic performance of Naked. Chase & Status ft. Cee-Lo Green-Brixton Briefcase

Taken from their No More Idols album which is set for release tomorrow, Chase & Status have hooked up with the Lady Killer himself Cee-Lo Green. You can go to their Youtube page and preview the whole album right now. I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about the Dizzee track and have had a few people saying it’s going to be massive (it is), well Murray posted this waaay back in the summer, so if you’d like to get your hands on that click here.

Anyway, back to this track, It’s quite a surprising collaboration as I’d have never thought I’d see Cee-Lo anywhere near a Dubstep single. His vocals work perfectly over Chase & Status’ big dubstep production though, leaving us with a track that just has that ‘epic’ feeling.

Cee-Lo Green-It’s OK Video

Cee-Lo doesn’t hang around when it comes to videos, and has fired out another one not long after releasing Bright Lights, Bigger City.

This is a much more pop-oriented effort, and accordingly comes packed with vibrancy and colour in both the video and the vocals. Whilst I preferred the stylings of the Bright Lights, tracks like this really project the positivity Cee-Lo’s vocals possess, and make for good listening from time to time.

Cee-Lo Green-Bright Lights, Bigger City Video

Exactly as I pictured this video would be: lots of grand night scenery, lots of excitement and a generally cool vibe running through the whole thing. The big, epic feel of the track is perfectly encapsulated with a sprawling, busy and stimulating video that captures the essence of the track nicely and adds a fitting visual context. It really reminds of the R&B video style of the early 00′s, but on a bigger scale and obviously accompanied by a powerful pop-soul song instead.

It’s fair to say that ‘bright lights, bigger city’ is the perfect summation of the entire audio-visual experience. The audio can, and should, be roped out of here.

William Shatner Covers Cee-Lo’s F*** You

What is it with brilliant cover versions these days?! Shatner brings his hilarious off-beat, spoken-word style to Cee-Lo’s mega-hit.

I still think this is his best one though (only the wrestling fans will get this one!). William Shatner singing Shawn Michaels’ entrance theme is one of the greatest things ever,

Cee-Lo Covers Kings of Leon's Radioactive

How good is Cee-Lo?! Live on Radio 1, Cee-Lo took on the Kings of Leon folk-gospel-rock-alternative-pop track with great results, delivering a rendition that is definitely worthy of a listen. We shouldn’t really be surprised by anything this guy can do, but it is genuinely shocking just how well his voice fits onto this track: I’d love to hear a studio version! As there’s no download available for this, I’ve instead thrown in the artwork for his latest single, for which the audio can be found here.

Preview of Cee-Lo's Lady Killer Album

Cee-Lo has taken to his Youtube channel to preview his album, letting loose of short snippets of each track. Expecting a lot from this album on the strength of his build-up work, and the preview certainly helps to create a little more anticipation.

Plain White T's Cover Cee-Lo's F*** You

My favourite part of this is the Dutch radio presenter saying f*** you.

Decent cover though, and they do the track justice with their own acoustic take, although the obvious lack of Cee-Lo’s distinct tones naturally puts this on a level below the original.

Cee-Lo and 50 Cent-F**k You Remix

This song is something special. The original has been catching some real buzz over the last few days, and 50 Cent took the time to drop a verse on it recently. Cee-Lo is at his absolute best on this one, bringing his distinctive vocals to a defiant, uptempo and entertaining track that is almost impossible to dislike. It’s got great production too, having been put together by Bruno Mars/The Smeezingtons.

Cee-Lo Green-Stray Bullets Mixtape

This dropped over the weekend, but having been pretty busy for the last few days I didn’t quite get around to writing this up. Came out of nowhere too, and I had no idea this was even in the pipeline! Also, is he Cee-Lo or Cee-Lo Green? I keep seeing different references to his name, and I’m getting confused.

Looking forward to giving this mixtape a listen, especially as its rare for someone of Cee-Lo’s ‘genre’/style to drop a mixtape. Fantastic news for us though given the man’s undeniable talent, further embellished by the strength of his recent stuff (especially Georgia!). Don’t miss out!
