Something to further brighten this lovely summer day, Raphael Saadiq comes through with visuals for the latest single from his superb Stone Rollin’ album.
Blending together live footage with more personal scenes, the video has a candid, almost ‘day in the life’ feel that makes for a realistic, relatable and ultimately enjoyable video from start to finish. The contrast (and blend) of tender moments with his significant other and crowd-pleasing stage performances captures the essence of the audio very well, with the upbeat and energetic nature of the production visualised in the lively, vivid performance scenes, whilst the more intimate lyricism is represented effectively in the homely moments.
Top all-round package, be sure to grab that album on iTunes now. It seems to be on offer for only £4.99 too, so unless you’re living quite far below the bread line, you’ve really got no excuse to not get it.

The title track from Raphael Saadiq’s upcoming album, Raphael once again blends together old school, original R&B with funk and soul to deliver a diverse and engaging track.
The production catches the attention right from the off with an almost country-style influence on its driven yet uplifting guitar riff, and is built upon with multi-layered instrumentation that keeps the track dynamic and ever-changing. Couple that with the usual raw, confident vocals of Saadiq and you have another very enjoyable vintage-inspired jam.
Really enjoyable video too, with the dim and dusty basement bar playing off that organic, retro feel of the audio nicely, and contrasted equally well by the sultry, considerably sexier shots with the woman of Raphael’s lyrical desires. Very enjoyable.

An absolutely superb audio-visual combination from one of the undisputed kings of the neo-soul genre, Raphael Saadiq.
Taken from his upcoming Stone Rollin’ album, the video details the suffering, pain and betrayal a ‘good man’ recieves from his significant other. So often in music we’re given the reverse situation with the ‘cheating, lying man’, but Raphael flips that notion and really tugs at the heartstrings with this emotional, crisply-made ’70s-style mini-movie. The thoughtful, winding nature of the song itself most certainly assists the delivery of the video’s message, and it’s a very complimentary relationship between the song and video.
Look out for the twist at the end, as it really changes the assumed relationship and story basis. I won’t spoil it for you, but to quote Saadiq’s thoughts on the video, ‘Everything around that man can be bad, his occupation, lifestyle, friends, but underneath all of it, he is a good man‘. Really worth a watch, and probably the best video I’ve seen in months. Brilliantly produced, very well acted, and set to a superb bit of vintage soul: an early contender for video of the year.

In what can best be described as a fitting coincidence given the retrospective nature of this particular post, 2009 was very much a year of hindsight. I rediscovered artists I’d neglected, I discovered artists who I’d simply ignored, but most importantly I began to see the fundamental flaw in my appreciation of music (especially hip-hop) and how I probably got it wrong.
Don’t make the same mistakes. Click on to grab some unmissable tracks, and of course my discoveries from the year gone by. I’ve thrown in a couple of lists too, as I know some of you can’t deal with excess reading.

If you have any sense, or any musical knowledge, you’re not reading this ‘cos you’ve already clicked the video. Raphael is a soul legend, and he cements that status with this strimmed-down live performance.
