Novel-Red Wine and Ambien Mixtape

Google tells me Ambien is a ‘prescription drug to cure insomnia’, so it’s not Novel misspelling ambient/ambience. Phew.

A vastly underrated and overlooked vocalist (and rapper), Novel comes through to spark life back into his career with this 19-track, two-part mixtape. He’s an excellent talent when everything clicks for him, and he’s played his chances well by surrounding himself with some top class producers here, including a man with an untouchable record of pop and R&B productions, Dallas Austin. Looking forward to giving this one a go, and hopefully it’ll jolt the R&B genre back to some sort of decent state. Free grab below.

R&B Fridays: Episode 88

A few interesting remixes this week, with over a third of this week’s tracks being of the remix variety. Other great tracks in there too, making this an R&B Friday that you’ll forgive for being a little late to the party.

Unlike recent weeks, there’s a pretty big recap on this week’s notable R&B/pop events: Yasmin previewed her new single, Tank came through with a new video, Timbaland’s #TimboThursdays rolled on, Trey Songz released the Love Faces video,  Miguel and Gilbere Forte combined for a fantastic effort, Diddy’s Dirty Money trio released an official mixtape, last week’s notable Grammy performances, Bruno Mars’ Grenade getting the Lil’ Wayne remix, and finally Erin Christine’s fantastic performance of Naked. All worth checking out, and more worth your time after the click below.

Joell Ortiz and Novel-Night Train Video

Joell goes for the everyman approach with this video, which really works with the lyrics and mood of the track.

It’s a simple yet very watchable video that manages to enhance the storytelling aspect of the original track through a very simple everyday routine. The monochrome in the video also adds a nice vintage touch, rounding off the audio-visual package nicely.

Audio can be grabbed here.

Joell Ortiz-Night Train ft. Novel

Novel is a name that’s cropping up more and more, in particular with collaborations with Joell Ortiz and fellow Slaughterhouse member Joe Budden. Although, it’s important to state Novel’s individual talent, and as far as soul singers go he’s in a lane of his own at the moment, which is typified by his recent excellent mixtape.

As far as this song goes, Joell goes on his storytelling tip which is supplemented by a great chorus by Novel to give us a track we can really vibe to and one that will be in heavy rotation on my iTunes. Download link just below, definitely worth picking up.

Novel-Legato Blues Summer [Mixtape]

Novel (who is also a decent rapper as well as a quality soul singer and producer) has been gathering some buzz lately and, in association with DJBooth.net, he’s released this mixtape. Very much looking forward to hearing what he’s come up here, and will definitely be copping his upcoming album Calligraphy, when that drops. Click here to grab the mixtape and click below to see the tracklist.

Novel – We Got It Bad [Video]

Not really my thing but I get a feeling Ajay/Soul/R&B lovers will adore this. These are the visuals for the first single from Novel’s upcoming album, Calligraphy, which is coming out later in the year.

Novel/Joell Ortiz/Colin Munroe - Walking On Air

This track is seriously in danger of being overlooked in favour of a certain Kanye/Beyonce collabo that’s just dropped, which would be a real shame. R&B/Soul singer Novel is someone I’ve only just started to hear about and what I’ve been hearing has largely been pretty fantastic, this track being the best I’ve heard from him thus far.

Collaborating once again with Joell Ortiz, who provides a soothing verse to accompany this tribute to that special someone, Novel has given us a song that you can really just sit back and relax to. With Colin Munroe assisting with his vocals, you have a winner of a track right here.

R&B Fridays: Episode 52

18 tracks from 18 artists this week, with a bunch of the biggest names in R&B/pop/soul making the cut.

As per recent routines, I’d recommend checking over the R&B posts from the week gone by: Dirty Money want your love, Trey Songz is already taken, Lloyd has dropped 3 guest features this week, and Ciara recruited Andre 3000 for a Ride remix.

Next stop of the tour: click below.

R&B Fridays: Episode 33

Similar to last week’s episode, this one contains a nice blend of big names, up-and-comers and some that we (I) haven’t heard from in a while.

We’ve dropped some R&B-related goodies throughout the week too, be sure to scroll down a couple of posts and check out the video for Usher’s lead single from Raymond vs. Raymond. When you’ve done that, scroll back up and enter the R&B room.
