Sh*t You Forgot About: Episode 2

We’re into our second week of what proved a popular new feature last week, and you’re in for another journey not too far down memory lane. I call it Recollection Avenue.

This genre-less weekly episodical seems like the perfect opportunity to mix things up, and whilst there’s still ‘normal’ stuff in there, feel free to indulge yourself with the two curveballs I’ve thrown in this week.

Last week you may recall Kid Cudi featuring heavily, and this week’s theme is…April 2009. I’ll be honest, it was more coincidental than anything.

Head on below deck if you’re ready.

One Reason To Love: Snow Patrol

I feel we do a lot of throwbacks around here, and its hard for you readers to keep up with them. Mine tend to revolve around a single song by artists that aren’t particularly active right now, and hence I’m switching up the style and going with a new title.

Final Straw represents the finest album of Snow Patrol’s career, and one of the immortal indie/alternative albums: full of fantastic music, they effortlessly drifted through a few styles from start to finish. Whilst it seems Chocolate was the majority’s favourite from the album, How To Be Dead represents the highlight of Final Straw for me.

Using contemplative melodies to create an enchanting backdrop, this is undoubtedly a benchmark example of intimate music. The lyrics are the real beauty of the track, as their honesty in detailing the nature of a couple’s argument is so grounded in reality its hard to not relate. There’s no advanced wordplay or exaggerated delivery: the song is written with a sharp realism, and sung with a hypnotising calmness that with both captivate and relax you. One of the all-time great songs.
