Year after year, RE:DEFINITION successfully aims to tell the tale of an area that lies at the crossroads where old values meet new ideals. Last summer’s presentation was a genre-blurring live concept album which brought together some of the biggest names in urban music, as part of the Create11. This year, Urban Development have teamed up with the Barbican and Create11 to present you with a collective of musicians, emcees, vocalists, actors and dancers on July 7th at The Hackney Empire.
Fusing live performance, multi-media and theatre on a journey that encompasses love, conflict, tradition and aspirations in east London, performers are KANO, GHETTS, TALAY RILEY, ROXXXAN, DONAEO, JAY NORTON, SELAH, SCRUFIZZER, MIKE HOUGH, MPHO, LOVELLE, MIKILL PANE, LADY CHANN and ABEL MILLER. Each artist’s tracks and lyrics will form the story that is RE:Definition.
With visuals coming from music video director and producer JAK FRSH, who’s worked with Wiley and Tinie Tempah amongst others, it’s back over to MATTHEW ‘EXCALIBAH’ XIA to direct the show. Visit www.barbican.org.uk or www.urbandevelopment.co.uk for tickets.
Be smart and support not only UK music, but the depth of creativity and originality on show here. If you’re down in the London area, don’t insult your own intelligence-get involved (no, I’m not making a commission!).

Really enjoyed the original for this (click here to go see the official video for that) and one name that’s certainly tipped to blow this year has hopped on for the remix.
Great to see unexpected collaborations like this between R&B acts with emcees from the grime scene , ‘variety is the spice of life’ and all that. Wretch 32 delivers a short but very good flowing verse to add to an already great track. You can listen to this below.
“20-year-old urban pop artist Talay Riley will release his new single ‘Sergeant Smash’ on 31st January through Jive Records.
Despite his age, Talay is already a familiar name within the music industry. Along with his recently released debut single ‘Humanoid’ (added to the Radio 1 In New Music We Trust list 4 weeks upfront), a year ago, Talay had his first UK #1 single with Chipmunk’s ‘Oopsy Daisy’, which he wrote. He followed this with a UK Top 10 as a featured artist and co-writer on Chipmunk’s ‘Look For Me’.”
A good track that has a hook that’s very addictive to the ears. Below is the Roksonix dubstep remix, which you can also download for free.
“Sergeant Smash, along with Humanoid (which you can find here), are the perfect introduction to Talay Riley. Sergeant Smash is a fresh, sexy and addictive track with it’s smooth catchy chorus and urban pop beats. The opening intensifying drum roll and edgy futuristic beats coupled with the Justin Timberlake and Timbaland style production make it exciting and instantly loveable.”
Now I wouldn’t really consider myself a massive R&B fan, but I am quite partial to the odd track here and there if it catches my ear, and this certainly does: It’s the latest effort from Talay Riley. If you’re not familiar with the name, I have a feeling you may be soon enough.
“20-year-old urban pop artist Talay Riley will release his debut single ‘Humanoid’ on 10th October. Talay is already a familiar name within the music industry: A year ago, Talay had his first UK #1 single with Chipmunk’s ‘Oopsy Daisy’, a song he wrote.
Debut single ‘Humanoid’ is a perfect taster of what is to come. It is a dark and edgy urban pop track that merges robotic beats, cutting edge production and a killer chorus to create a song that is instant and exciting”.
I have to say, I quite like this. If anyone remembers Unklejam (hardly any of you will, sadly), this sounds really influenced by their style. Good song, plenty of potential in this one. Shame about the Chipmunk link.
