Brand new visuals for Ne-Yo’s latest, with a couple of his more esteemed R&B peers along for the ride.
The track is a solid slow jam in a simple, uncomplicated style that has been surprisingly absent in recent years, and the video also proves a pleasant surprise by taking a typical setting for an R&B track, a strip club, and adding an unexpected touch of class to proceedings by focusing a little less on the sleaze in favour of a more sultry, smooth theme. However, that’s not to say this video is quite fitting for younger eyes, as there are certainly some rather raunchy moments!
Much like the audio, the video employs a very simple and effective style and is worth a watch for the R&B heads. Nice to see three big names of the genre come together for this too, given that they’re pretty much fighting for same spot, and equally it’s good to see a few other music luminaries pop up for cameos. A really weak week for R&B music, with most of this week’s decent content already released by the rising stars of the genre: Jhene Aiko’s latest video, Patrick Stump’s cover of Shutterbugg, Jesse Boykins’ newest visuals and Bridget Kelly’s first EP. The delay this week (as has been the case multiple times in recent months) has been purely down to a lack of content, and it’s an interesting scenario that R&B faces at the minute with such a dearth of top-class talent. This week has seen some superb music video releases in the pop, R&B and soul world and that mini-revival continues with a solid offering in this week’s R&B instalment.
The aforementioned videos include heart-warming visuals from Musiq Soulchild, uplifting scenes from Patrick Stump and Lupe Fiasco, an intrictate, thought-provoking effort from Frank Ocean, and finally a sharp, confident performance from The-Dream in one of his best releases to date.

Being on time is the new being late. Or something like that. Gone with a slightly different approach for this week’s episode, as I sympathise with the mainstream folk who come looking for some party/chart tracks, and leave empty handed. I’ve chucked in a few artists/tracks I don’t particularly like, but will certainly go down well with the mainstreamers, and of course there’s still a healthy dose of music that’s actually good too.
Onto the recap from this week, and three noteworthy posts: Frank Ocean dropped some highly anticipated visuals for Novacane, Katy Perry released an entertaining video for her latest single, and most importantly The Weeknd dropped off some superb new material.

T-Pain’s got a big single on his hands here, and delivers an easy-to-watch video that I expect will get an awful lot of rotation in mainstream media.
Nice concept on the video, with a battle of the bands theme, as Chris and Pain duel with their verses. Simple, but takes the song in a slightly different direction and generally makes for a mainstream-friendly, inoffensive watch. It also brings out a little energy in the song, which helps to offset the slightly corny/poppy feel of the track somewhat. Solid choice on the lead girl too (if you happen to look like her, call me), making a nice change to the usual plastic picks.
Not a classic by any means, but will probably be a bit of a guilty pleasure for me in the coming weeks. Audio can be swiped from here.

Well, this came out of nowhere! I was fairly convinced this mixtape was never happening, but T-Pain’s only gone and turned up with 30 tracks (yep, 30!) in this bumper mixtape.
There’s no doubt there’s going to be some filler in there, but T-Pain does certainly get it right from time to time and I expect to find a couple of tracks on here that will warrant some serious attention. A lot of the tape seems to be produced by Young Fyre too, who is admittedly a fairly new name to my ears: if T-Pain has the faith to give him 15 of the 30 tracks, there’s a good chance he may end up becoming a fairly big deal. Genuine reason on the delay this week: I wasn’t happy with the amount of good quality material as of yesterday afternoon, but the R&B/pop world has delivered in the last 24 hours or so to make sure that situation has improved.
Not too much to recap on from the past week, with only the three related items: UK starlet Jodie Connor released her newest single, fellow homegrown upcomer Jaya released a new video featuring two prominent MCs, and Mike Posner let loose of official visuals for his collaboration with Lil’ Wayne.

For Khaled’s first track since his signing to Cash Money Records, he links up with Rick Ross, Plies, Lil Wayne and T-Pain; which will only go to further instigate rumors that Pain is about to sign with Young Money Records. The single is also thought to be the first release from Khaled’s forthcoming EP We The Best Forever.
With this being a DJ Khaled joint and considering the lineup, you’d expect hard hitting beats, an anthemic hook and plenty of punchlines, and that’s exactly what you get. However, I’m not quite feeling it, and I was expecting better: don’t get me wrong it’s not a terrible track, but there’s potential on here for it to be much more. I never thought I’d say this, but I think Plies tops both Weezy and Ross, coming through with an aggressive flow in keeping with the theme of the track, whereas the other two just lay down pretty average verses.

A simple video for the official remix to Wiz’s monster track. Good to see the effort going in here though, with each act contributing well to the video, and increase the energy of the track. In particular, Snoop seems to be having a great time and his chemistry with Wiz really shows here.
What’s with T-Pain’s eyewear? He looks like a failed James Bond villain, but with an Autotune impediment. Audio can be swiped from here.

Diddy just let this one loose on Twitter, and I assume it’s the official remix to the track. Once again, a T-Pain remix has become part of the official remix (Black and Yellow being the other example), and it’s a good thing as his remixes have been very good in recent weeks.
We do also have to deal with a Gucci Mane verse, though in honesty it’s not too terrible and does fit in line with the track fairly well. However, it has to be said that Pain’s contribution is certainly the highlight, as he throws in a new intro, as well as retaining his contributions to the hook and adlibs.

Seemingly the official remix, this one throws in the T-Pain verse from a previous remix and adds in verses from Snoop, Juicy J (I think he’s in Three 6 Mafia?) and a brand new Wiz verse for good measure.
I was a big fan of T-Pain’s remix, and I’m glad to see they left his adlibs in as they do really up the energy of the track, whilst his verse certainly fits in well. Snoop’s verse is short but likeable, with some diversity in his delivery making the most of this uptempo hip-hop style. I’m enjoying Wiz’s new verse too, with some thinly-veiled references to his recent arrests and a general continuation of his head-nodding, confident rhymes from the original. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoyed the original.

T-Pain takes a spin on Wiz Khalifa’s great single here, adding a surprisingly enjoyable twist on the track. Undoubtedly, this guy can bring energy when he wants to and this beat is very well suited to him when he switches up to that style. Really worth a listen if you’re a fan of the original and/or T-Pain. I’ve also thrown in a bonus that was sent across, which remixes a Waka Flocka track I choose to know nothing about.

It’s funny this dropped today, as I was thinking this morning (yes, I was awake in the morning!!) of how T-Pain used to be absolutely massive, in terms of anything he touched was a hit. It’s fair to say that since those heady 07/08 days his music has become a little more, well, musical I suppose and hence his mainstream appeal has dropped off a tad.
