Not our usual fare, but I have a suspicion that this mixtape may just return Jay Sean to a better critical standing in the minds of R&B fans. His career has taken a clear turn in the pop direction since his move to Cash Money, and whilst that’s certainly opened him up to a new (and lucrative) fanbase, it’s done so at the expense of his own musical quality and originality.
The release of the title track last week offered real hope of a return to some smooth R&B fare: there’s no denying Jay Sean has some real ability when he picks the right style, and hence this could become quite an important release in the R&B calendar. Couple of noteworthy features too, including an appearance from Lupe Fiasco, and without further ado you can grab the project for free below.

Is R&B currently suffering from one of its worst recessions? Outside of a few upcoming stars (Frank Ocean, The Weeknd and others) there hasn’t been much in terms of consistent quality, and outside of the aforementioned two artists, it’s increasingly difficult to see where the recovery will come from.
However, one of the few artists in recent years to really come away with credit recently released a free album, as The-Dream dropped off a new project, and even if R&B is struggling, soul season is underway with debut visuals from John West and the latest single from Goapele.

Short recap this week, with just the three noteworthy and relevant posts from the R&B/pop world: Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding’s collaboration got some visuals, a pretty interesting electro remix of Diddy-Dirty Money’s I Hate That You Love Me was liberated, and finally Musiq Soulchild came through with one of the better tracks of January, with his first single from his upcoming sixth album.

No recap this week thanks to a temperamental hard drive, but R&B Fridays actually makes it out on a Friday for the second consecutive week, which is a pretty big victory.
Lots of remixes and rappers popping up this week, with some huge names coming through with some very unexpected pop and R&B remixes. More than enough original material too though, making this a very diverse episode that’ll satisfy the vast majority of you grubby little folk.

Here are the visuals for the brand new single from Alesha Dixon and Jay Sean. A little bit surprised to see this hadn’t been featured in one of Ajay’s R&B Fridays, I can only assume decent audio for this hasn’t dropped yet, or it’s just one of those songs that has simply slipped through the OTU net. Either way I’m sure he’ll source some audio of this for you in the future (if he’s not too busy from his current day job strawberry picking).
I wasn’t expecting to, but I’m liking this rather club-friendly song. Accompanied with these smooth visuals I can certainly see it being somewhat of a hit. Definitely should get some decent airplay at the very least.

Last one we’ll post from this album, which was digitally released (and ‘released’ a few days ago) today and physically released in early October.
Jay Sean comes through with a great hook on this track, which works overall as a fairly motivational effort. A triumphant, powerful beat takes the majority of the responsiblity for giving this one a positive feel, whilst Wayne comes with a fairly standard verse.

You’re probably wondering why I didn’t keep this for tonight’s upcoming R&B Friday, well the reason for that is simply because I am struggling to narrow down this tracks to an acceptable number for you, such is the quality of the songs at my disposal this week. This one didn’t make the cut purely because it has a couple of DJ tags on it. Best Jay Sean track I’ve heard in a while tbh.

49 episodes in, and the fantastic material still keeps coming. The common theme of recent weeks has been a frightening consistency in the quality, as we’ve seen some superb R&B tracks being let loose in anticipation of the summer. Whereas previous R&B Fridays have been a bit of a struggle to fill/review, the past few weeks have certainly made my (busy) life a lot easier!
This week is no different, and you’ve got some very good stuff to look forward to in your immediate future from the likes of Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Amerie and many more. Not as many lesser-known names as there usually are, instead we’ve got the more established names looking to make their mark. Click on to let them know if they got it right.

Now I’m not fan of Lil Jon but this is a great track, produced by David Guetta so you know this is going to be a club hit – very minimal Lil Jon on this anyway. You may remember a demo of this track being let loose by Ajay a while back, it was good then and even better now. This will certainly be in my playlist for a while and yours too I suspect. For the first time in a few weeks, I’m not rushing to get this done. As great as that is for me, for you it means I’ve gathered a great deal of material and carefully sifted through it all to deliver the best stuff. Not only that, but I’ve offered a little more in terms of track reviews than in recent times. I’m alright like that.

Quite the range of acts once again, both in terms of popularity and age, with the boy Justin Bieber making an appearance as well as veterans Jagged Edge. Not too much range in the quality though: it’s predominantly good stuff as I’ve taken time to root out (most of) the poor stuff. Any crap stuff is just there to make the rest look better.

Unusual episode this one. I actually had a vast majority of this material with me by the end of Saturday night and could have probably written an entire episode right there. There was a great deal dropped later in the week too, making this episode 19 tracks deep and in terms of quality it’s potentially one of the best yet.

Cash Money’s big hitters all huddle up together for a single. Wayne, his rock-minded buddy, his token Asian friend and a half-pigeon half-man collaborate for Kevin’s new single.
It’s not too bad to be fair, and I generally don’t mind Kevin’s material at all. It’s nothing particularly original, but certainly worth listening to and it could be a whole lot worse as far as mainstream music goes. Will probably grow on me too.
