R&B Fridays: Episode 104

The last 48 hours are a bit of a rapid blur, so to me it’s still Friday. Very solid new material this week, with some of the bigger names in the R&B, pop and even hip-hop world making appearances.

Only the three relevant posts to recap on, with the announcement of the Future Hits Live tour, solid new music from Drake, and a brand new EP from the talented Rocki Evans which is probably going to be worth a listen.

Click, read, download, enjoy.

Beyonce-Girls (Who Run The World) Video

Despite Single Ladies being released almost three years ago, it feels as if Beyoncé never really went away. Hence, it feels a bit wrong to say she’s ‘back’, but that’s exactly what’s happening with this club shredding single.

I wasn’t keen on the audio on first impression a few weeks back, but the Pon De Floor sample has grown on me a little. The lyrics are still corny as hell, but the retweaked beat is full of bounce, and the video capitalises on that with another addictive set of performances from Beyoncé.

Nice bit of diversity in the video too, with a somewhat apocalyptic/desolate setting making for something a little different. Regardless of my views on the actual music, you have to give major props to Beyoncé for doing what she does in heels just as well as those guys in Converse too (product placement much?). Always fun to watch her in full flow.

Kanye West, Beyonce and Charlie Wilson-See Me Now

Kanye’s taken to his blog to let loose some new music, that was actually only finished earlier today. See Me Now is pretty contrasting to Power, with an upbeat approach and positive vibes coarsing through the track. The trio of ‘Ye, No I.D. and Lex Luger huddle up to piece together this uplifting, bouncy and soulful production that will definitely remind you of the College Dropout, but with a much more triumphant spin.

Beyonce does a great job on her feature, sharing the hook with the unmistakable vintage vocals of Charlie Wilson. Ye’s verses are strong, and definitely have some real replayability about them with some great lines and as with the production, triumphantness is the name of the game here. Some of you may recognise a couple of these lines from his recent social networking tour too.

6 minutes of great listening in my opinion, and 2 out of 2 on the album leaks (assuming this makes the album as its not confirmed) so far. The comeback is well and truly on.

Beyonce-Alternate Halo Video

Way better than the original. Interesting parallel story, and certainly adds a new dimension to the song. Good job.

Beyonce-Why Don't You Love Me Video

New visuals from Mrs. Jay-Z, although I’m a lttle busy right now so I haven’t watched it yet. Updated with thoughts below.

With that said, I highly doubt any of you need a push from me to watch some new Beyonce visuals. Let’s be honest here.

Enjoying the direction she took with this video, and whilst it is pretty different for her, I feel like I’ve seen this sort of video a lot recently in pop/mainstream acts (and I don’t even watch music TV). It’s a cool video, but sort of falls in line a bit with the direction artists like GaGa, Katy Perry etc. have already worked. Nonetheless, it’s a stylistically fun, well-produced bit of video.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce-Telephone Video

This is very good. It’s over 9 minutes long, which is almost MJ-esque, but it’s really worth watching.

They’ve gone in a direction absolutely no-one would have expected with the video in terms of theme/story, but it works and it’s worryingly compelling to watch. Audio can be swacker-jacked here if you were too ignorant the first time.

R&B Fridays: Episode 37

There are some utterly awesome tracks in this episode, and I have no qualms with name-checking the new Janet Jackson track as the definite highlight of this episode. Of course, the rest is very good too, but that track is sweet.

R&B Fridays: Episode 36

I got quite lucky with this week’s episode. I’d hoped to throw in a couple of older tracks that I revisited/reloved this week, and thankfully there hasn’t been a huge glut of material released this week to overshadow that. Don’t panic: Naturally, there is still a load of new stuff. I usually try to sneak in some older tracks when I can (dedicated followers will attest to this), I’m just extra keen this week.

New stuff from Jason Derulo, Usher and more after the click. Before you do though, be sure to check out The-Dream’s newest track which was dropped yesterday.

R&B Fridays: Episode 30

This week has seen a number of leaks (potentially) from Usher’s upcoming Raymond vs. Raymond, and it’s those that anchor this week’s episode.

This milestone episode has got a lot of quality, and a lot of new tracks that I’ve really enjoyed this past week from both huge and lesser known names, as well as a surprising number of unreleased tracks, and some from artists of years gone by which will catch some by surprise.

It feels like only yesterday I wrote Episode 1!

Notorious Indi’s Best of ‘09

2009 was one hell of an interesting year. We saw the comeback of Eminem, albums by the 2 other big names of hip-hop in Jay-Z and 50 Cent, and once again we waited all year for Dr. Dre’s Detox which never came. It’s fair to say that despite this the year hasn’t been dominated by the big boys and we’ve seen a gradual change in hip hop – the gangsta rap of previous years has steadily evolved into what can be described as ‘Hip Hop Hipsters’. Kanye led the way back in 2004 and by 2009 the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi, Wale and Asher Roth have emerged.

R&B Fridays (on Saturday): Episode 28

You thought I’d forgotten? Shame on you. I’m allowed a day off for Christmas.

The last R&B Friday of 2009 is packed to the rafters, with 21 (!!) tracks from a glut of good names. Beyoncé (with a Ne-Yo assist) anchors the bunch with a surprisingly high number of tracks in this one, and there are of course many other superb artists waiting for your attention after the click.

On picture duty for the 25th episode is a young newcomer who I am going to be tracking very closely, as he’s going to be huge: Bruno Mars was recently featured on B.o.B’s phenomenal “debut” single and is featured twice in this episode.

Leona Lewis, R. Kelly, Bobby Valentino and others provide tracks too, so click on and grab some goodness.
