Posting this has actually made me realise how much of a hip-hop geek I am. Twitter followers and friends will know I’ve been searching for this for ages. For some bizarre reason, the original album-version of Protect Ya Neck isn’t entirely ‘dirty’ and features some censorship particularly over ODB’s bars (nothing new there). So anyway, I’ve finally got my mitts on this and feel it’s only right to share it with the other hip-hop geeks out there. Apart from the censorship, the joint is identical save the ending which rolls on for 40-odd seconds more. Definitely for the Wu-Heads this one.

As the UK’s BBC pioneers to slowly strip down everyone’s free will I was going to post a 40 minute long video of Wu’s set at Glastonbury over the weekend. Alas, the BBC picked up their solitary rotary dial telephone to call someone at YouTube to politely request that that said footage was removed. Up there with the Daily Mail for everything that’s backward with the UK.
What I have managed to find is a 2:21 clip of the Method Man show performing Gravel Pit, presumably the track the BBC and Glastonbury thought was the Wu’s best work (*shrugs*).
Warning: Contains very strong language like ‘ass’.
Rant over.

6 minutes of footage from Wu-Tang’s performance at The Forum in London last night.
OTU had people in attendance so expect a little something exclusive coming soon.
All I can say here is that Mef looked pretty hungry up there last night. Now I’ve got to go listen to 36 Chambers.

Apologies for the lateness: I didn’t know it existed until I saw an email from Mick earlier!
“Mick Boogie, known for his eclectic DJ sets and amazing mixtapes, is also an avid basketball fan and a video game junkie. With the recent return of the classic 90’s arcade game NBA JAM (now refreshed and remixed for 2010), Mick was inspired to put together a mixtape of classic and rare 90’s remixes that serve as the soundtrack to where we were back in the day. Being that NBA JAM dropped in 93, Mick’s decision to call the mix “93 Til’ Infinity” was the only appropriate choice! In addition to the mixtape, Mick collaborated with vintage t-shirt designers Homage to create a limited edition NBA JAM/93 Til Infinity inspired tee to celebrate the release of this mix and the videogame. You can find the shirt here”.
You can grab the mixtape here, and view the tracklist after the jump below.

The sound quality isn’t great here, but it’s the whole entire Wu-Tang (minus ODB obviously) performing Triumph last night at Rock The Bells in San Francisco.
Great to see them all together again on stage. Hopefully RZA can perform some miracle man management and get them all together again for a new album!
Side note: It’s weird how I look at Rae up there now and think he’s the biggest star in the group.

Haven’t checked this yet but wanted to get it out to you as soon as possible.
The Wu-Tang have released the third volume in their Swarm series: Pollen: The Swarm Part 3. As you would expect, it features all the regulars so be sure to pick that up if possible.
Anyway, onto the track in question. With ODB you know what’s on offer; zany, abstract rhymes. His son also provides some vocals over this one.

About to get pretty Wu’d up in here over the next two posts. Not only do I have the final installment of the DJ Mathematics’ Return of the Wu & Friends with two more exclusives ready for you to sink your teeth into, but up next is my favourite drop from Inspectah Deck’s latest LP. Stay tuned for a medley of Wu-gasms.
Both these tracks feature a core of the original Wu members. Mathematics does a great job on the boards, keeping that true Wu formula intact. Real Nillaz is a real treat.

Finally! We have a track from Mathematics’ Return of the Wu & Friends which I’m psyched about!
This number features an Ol’ Dirty Bastard verse I’ve never heard before (If you know where it’s from I would love to know) and an artist named Badluck who fits the Wu Tang ‘bill’ pretty nicely.
Mathematics does a top job on the beat too. Dramatic horns and some nice soulful sampling combined with tasteful drum work. Good job.

Newest track to emerge from DJ Mathematics’ Return of the Wu & Friends. If you missed the inside scoop on the album and the first drop then recap here.
Back on topic, Mathematics lays down a late 80′s real old school beat and pieces together lyrics belonging to none other than the GZA, Masta Killa and Inspectah Deck. Nice Big Daddy Kane sampling. Really like this.

New Wu on the horizon kids and kidettes. Wu producer DJ Mathematics is bringing the heat with a new wu project, complete with exclusives, recorded between 2000 through to 2008. I’m expecting some nice remixes on this joint and look forward to its release date on 16th Feb of this year. After the click is the track listing. Be sure to check it.
The single Clap 2010 can be copped right below and features the wu heavyweights Rae, Meth and Ghost. (It states U-God makes an appearance so unless over time my ears have become immune to his ‘standing-out-like-a-sore-thumbness-shitness’ then I must be mistaken). Although I’m really looking forward to the album dropping next month, I’m actually relativley disappointed with this remix. Although saying that, I wasn’t crazy about the original. I guess that’s why it was only a hidden bonus track (3:53 onwards – but don’t skip it because the outro Jah World is awesome)…

In what can best be described as a fitting coincidence given the retrospective nature of this particular post, 2009 was very much a year of hindsight. I rediscovered artists I’d neglected, I discovered artists who I’d simply ignored, but most importantly I began to see the fundamental flaw in my appreciation of music (especially hip-hop) and how I probably got it wrong.
Don’t make the same mistakes. Click on to grab some unmissable tracks, and of course my discoveries from the year gone by. I’ve thrown in a couple of lists too, as I know some of you can’t deal with excess reading.

So I think we are all in agreement: 2009 has been quite a year for hip-hop. It has seen the return of Em, Jay has completed his Blueprint trilogy and 50 has had so much beef you would think he will be full up for Xmas (*cringes*. Yeah that was bad).
Aside from the big names dropping their albums, we have also seen some highly anticipated underground acts dropping LP’s too. This is my Best Of ’09 list and contains some real gems so don’t let the year go past before getting your hands on these.
Enjoy.

This kid amazes me. Shyheim forms this week’s Thursday Throwback and is a little bit more underground that what you have been used to over the last few volumes. He was 14 when his debut LP AKA The Rugged Child dropped. Yes, 14. Growing up he lived with Ghostface and quickly became the Wu’s youngest affiliate.

Ready to re-live the 90’s? Thursday Throwbacks are here. Whether you grew up in the era or were just too young to appreciate hip-hop, we’ve got something for everyone. The main purpose of Thursday Throwbacks is to reminisce on the classics and pay homage to the artists who took the genre to the next level.
It aims to educate the uneducated with some background on each track, but if you’re an East Coast ‘Head’ like me then sit back, grab a beer and let the good times roll. We will begin today with the track which grasped hip-hop back from the West Coast and paved the way for things to come…
