Torae – For The Record [Video]

Finally!

The reason I say this isn’t because the video is particularly great, it’s because of the exposure it will help give this record and the LP in general. For me, this track was the middle finger to anyone who thought Premo was falling off. It’s also the track which proves Torae as one of the nicest in the underground, as he effortlessly rides over the perfect boom-bap concoction.

Anything else I missed? Go grab the audio here.

I’m a little (a lot) late on posting this up, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been killing my iTunes for the last month. Easily the best Premo beat of the year is matched lyrically by the heavy-hitter Brooklynite Torae who rides over Premo’s feel-good boom-bap.

Without doubt the standout track from Torae’s latest offering, but notable mentions go to collaborations featuring Pete Rock and Large Pro who each bring their own unique formula to the project. Definitely one for the heads.

Peter Rosenberg & Popchips Present : What's Poppin Vol. 1

Normally, I don’t go for these ‘personality hosted’ mixtapes as they just tend to be a mish-mash of readily-available tracks. However, the ever-entertaining Peter Rosenberg (one of the few prominent lovers of both hip-hop and wrestling!) has really pulled off something special here, with a 23-track project full of original material from the likes of Raekwon, Odd Future, Kendrick Lamar, Asher Roth, Childish Gambino and many more. There’s even a Macho Man Randy Savage interlude!

Needless to say, this looks like a must-have for all hip-hop fans, and alongside the glut of rap gargantuans, there are a couple of ‘middle-ground’ names on here I’ve been looking to get into, whilst I’m sure we’ll also be introduced to a few new and upcoming stars. To quote Peter, ‘With so much BS out there — sometimes it’s hard to find what’s really poppin. Well I did the work for you. Enjoy.’

Rah Digga ft. Torae & Styles P-You Got It Remix

The second piece of delightful hip-hop I have for you is a remix from Rah Digga’s Classic LP now featuring New Yorkers Torae and Styles P to add a bit of metal to the original.

Instrumental is the same knocking Nottz beat from the original, which for those missed it first time round features a jaunty, head-nodding baseline acting as the perfect tempo for each emcee to do their thing over. Torae and Ghost’s vocals are powerful and sandwich the venomous female tongue of Digga. Mmmmm….

Statik Selektah/Skyzoo/Torae/Rapper Pooh/Lee Wilson

Wow. Lots of featurage here (Yeah, I just made up a new word. And what?).  Last month Indi dropped some of Statik’s material from his 100 Proof (The Hangover) album (there’s loads of stuff there so check it out).

Now I’m dropping my favourite track from the LP. As usual from the talented beat-maker/scratcher, Statik pulls in some of his contacts for another feature-heavy joint. I’m a big fan of Torae and I recommend you pick up some of his stuff. We know lots about Skyzoo and Rapper Pooh (Little Brother) so you know what to expect on this track. Pure fire.
