“Chapter 2 takes a much darker tone. It is the nightmare, the beginning of the descent into madness. The ILLZ finds himself in a rotting facade of a house; the house he shared with her. Trapped in it, unable to escape, this is him coming to terms with her and how she changed. They have grown apart, and as he searches for her, he finds little mementos, and her revelation signals that what she became is not whom he had initially fallen in love with. But his desire to be with her is unwavering, and he will destroy anything in his way to get to her, to have her by his side.”
A few days late on this, but as it’s The ILLZ then it’s essential it gets some time up in here. This forms the first part of The ILLZ’ latest Let It Fall video project which you can follow over here. I’m not sure which version I prefer though; this or the original (which also has a video).
“Chapter 1 follows a couple as their relationship has reached it’s breaking point. Inundated by jealousy, anger, and resentment, what starts off as trip to the ocean to try and rekindle a spark instead leads to a violent fight. Reality is harsh, gritty and painful. This is all juxtaposed against the subconscious, which is represented by the tunnel. Here the couple is alone, on a journey. Things are good, things are bad, but they are together. This represents the internal struggle of the two.”
Jersey up-and-comer The ILLZ has hooked up with DJBooth.net to present ILLZSENTIAL, a street album covering the highlights of his musical career to date.
“Released to commemorate the two-year anniversary of his debut project, This is…(The W.C.A. Session EP), the project features 15 previously-released records from the freestyle series alumnus, as well as five bonus remixes. ILLZ flies solo throughout ILLZSENTIAL, flowing over the boardwork of Coldcut & DJ Krush, ILL Tal, Rekevin, Eliot Lipp and many more.”
This is a great project for people yet to sample the brilliance of The ILLZ or even the hardcore fans like me who seemed to be missing a few of these tracks!
I’ve run out of superlatives for The ILLZ. One of my favourites, if not my favourite, from The ILLZ’ (insert superlative of choice here) The Pursuit which I still bump at least once a week.
The visuals here perfectly depict the subject matter in question with both parties grappling with the pressures and joys that the modern day relationship brings. The use of one single room here works well as it showcases a timeline of their life together throughout different snippets.
You can get your hands on this alongside the whole of The ILLZ’ back catalogue, FOR FREE, here. Do it. It’s brilliant.
Some new ILLZ for you this Sunday evening from his upcoming ILLZSENTIAL: The Essential ILLZ Collection. Rocking over Nas’ Take It In Bloodbeat The ILLZ and his team recreate The (original) Pursuit from its namesake titled LP from 2009.
Superb stuff here (as always) and definitely an improvement on the original. Stay tuned for further leaks and news on the LP when it drops on July 6th.
One of my favourite artists across any genre right now drops some visuals from his breathtaking In Between Video Series which dropped last summer.
I’m feeling lazy on this, but watch the damn video. Then head over to The ILLZ website, watch all his videos for this series and then download all his music for free because it’s absolutely brilliant.
The ILLZ let this loose on his Twitter only moments ago, so I haven’t even had a chance to download it yet myself: However, going by everything he’s released it will be amazing. Fans of conscious lyricism and intricate, delicate production will love this.
If my word isn’t good enough for you and you still need convincing, then here’s a subtle push in the right direction. The music speaks for itself. You shouldn’t need too much more persuasion than that.
One of my favourite artists right now catches up with itsthebino.com for a quick interview in anticipation of his new free EP dropping tomorrow:
“Every generation has a few artists who never receive the critical acclaim they deserve. Their work generally goes unnoticed by mainstream media but their following, albeit small, is cult like. The ILLZ is one of those artists. It may be premature to call The ILLZ underrated. His career is just beginning. After releasing The Pursuit and In Between Video Series, The ILLZ’s stock is rising. To say I’m a fan of The ILLZ is an understatement. It was a humbling experience to meet up with him in his home state of New Jersey. He discuses how he got his name, his fans, producing, the state of the music industry and more.”
My absolute favourite artist out right now drops us some visuals to his introspective and atmospheric To Know Your Place In The Universe from the greatly anticipated :03 from Gold EP dropping March 10th.
Like all of The ILLZ’ excellent videography, this one represents that absolute chill-out feel the track emanates from top to bottom with the subtle camera work and alternating focus.
Hopefully visuals like this will give The ILLZ that wider exposure which he most certainly deserves. As I said on my Twitter last week, this is some of the most enjoyable hip-hop I’ve ever heard.
Audio here. Download his back catalogue here. *Highly recommended*
Having become totally enthused by atmospheric production and conscious raps as of late (thanks in part to Ajay’s nod towards Kno’s excellent Death Is Silent), here is another emcee that I’m keen to hear much more of going forward (in fact, after this I’m going to obtain his entire back catalogue). You can tell from the single cover that not only does ILLICIT have a quirky sense of humour, he doesn’t do gimmicks either.
This joint forms the first single from his upcoming :03 From GOLD EP which is due to drop in March. And if I didn’t mention before, this is fantastic.
