R&B Fridays: Episode 139

A very slow week for R&B/pop music this week (those new Chris Brown/Rihanna collaborations don’t count as music), and as a result it’s a pretty short, and stream-heavy, episode this week.

I’ve made this statement before, but R&B really is in a bad spot at the minute, with a serious lack of both quantity and quality as many of its stars are either inactive or pursuing pop careers. It’s a sad state of affairs, but I retain hope that the likes of The-Dream will be back soon to restore the natural order.

Mickey Factz-Untie

When Spree Wilson sent this track over, I felt like I was in a bind and bound actually. Through his guitar strings, I speak from the heart about how I feel about life. Open your hearts.

You can certainly hear that Spree influence here, with a lively guitar-driven backdrop ensuring Mickey has a busy and active production to weave his raps into. Solid raps as always from Mickey, combining his conscious style with a clarity and simplicity that makes for very easy listening. Nice blend of alternative and hip-hop, and another solid entry in the May-Hem series.

Spree Wilson-The Never Ending Now (Free Album)

Given the time constraints on us recently, I’ve not really been able to get you Spree’s material as I should have, which is actually a damn shame as he’s a rather talented fellow. His style is very similar to B.o.B’s pre-album work, with a mixture of rapping and harmonic, acoustic-influenced vocals.

I’ve caught 3 or 4 tracks from this album already, all of which have been incredibly diverse and hugely replayable. In particular, Don’t Pass Me By had a chillout, almost Zero 7-esque nature about it, whilst Love You Better really evoked that 2009 B.o.B style. He seems as comfortable with the bars as he does singing with a guitar, and that sort of talent rarely goes unnoticed: simply put, I’d hugely recommend that you jump on the Spree Wilson bandwagon now.
