Along with Kendrick Lamar, Slim is one of the rising West Coast rappers that Dr. Dre has publicly co-signed, and things seem to be really stepping up for the nephew of Ricky Ross (the drug kingpin, not the obese rapper!).
Admittedly, I’ve not been totally blown away by the scraps of material I’ve heard from Slim, but I’ve not heard enough to make a strong conclusion and I expect this project to define Slim for me, and many other hip-hop heads. Given that first impressions stick, Slim’s got some solid backup to help his cause with production credits including Bink, Boi-1da, Dr. Dre and Sha Money XL, whilst Dre also features vocally on the tape, alongside Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Prodigy and more. Very interesting. Despite being namechecked a very long time ago by Dr. Dre as someone he was working heavily with for Detox, it’s fair to say there doesn’t seem to be much material coming from Slim in light of that glowing endorsement/working relationship.
Hence, I’m sure this will interest many of you. Slim comes through with some decent rhymes for a relative newcomer, and certainly exhibits (no pun intended) a rapping style that will certainly suit Dre’s own flow. He’s not going to blow anyone’s mind lyrically, but a duo’s chemistry tends to be more important than individual ability, and it appears they’ve got along well enough for Dre to keep him around. Nottz serves up a great production here, with a clear structure, unfussy sound and powerful melodies driving the track along, whilst Xzibit tags along for a typically-aggressive hook. Decent all-rounder.

Interesting line-up here. Dre’s publicly praised Slim Da Mobster, and mentioned that he may get him on Detox, whilst Kobe enjoys co-signs from some of hip-hop’s biggest names, most notably the feature on Eminem’s most recent album. He also popped up almost 2 years ago on a supposed Detox reference track with T.I., and has a slew of other big features to his name.
Having said all that, I’m not entirely sure what part Kobe plays on this remix as the only addition I picked up was Slim’s verse, unless he’s a previously-unlisted feature for background vocals. Slim’s verse is decent though, and it’s probably worth grabbing just to get some exposure to his music, as I’ve not really heard much about him to date. Click here to see the official video for the original if you haven’t already, and here for the Game remix of the track.
