The LOX, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon-Wu Block (Prod. RZA)

Hip-hop. That’s what (I hope) we’re all here for right? Well it don’t get no better than this. Wu and The LOX come through with their first offering from their upcoming collaborative album Wu-Block. RZA crafts driving horns yet thankfully mixes things up sporadically throughout tailoring things perfectly for each emcees to drop those characteristically heavy bars. Now this is some Supreme Clientele Ghostface. Top stuff.

RZA-You Don’t Own Me

To quote the RZA:  “THIS IS A SONG TALKING ABOUT HOW PEOPLE TRY TO TELL WHAT TO DO AND WHAT TO BE… THE SONG CAN RELATE TO A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN OR CITIZENS AND AUTHORITY…OR JUST ANY CONFRONTATION SUCH AS A BOUNCER AT A CLUB WITH THE GUEST LIST… PEACE, RZA.

Travis Barker, RZA, Raekwon and Tom Morello-Carry It Video

A bright and energetic video for Travis’ latest single from Give The Drummer Some.

Featuring two of the Wu’s finest, it’s impressive just how well RZA and Raekwon adjust to this rock-rap production and really make it their own. Their equally comfortable in the video, with RZA in particular being really magnetic. Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and Travis come through with typically intense performance on the drums and guitar respectively, delivering a video that enhances the track immeasurably.

Travis Barker, RZA, Raekwon and Tom Morello-Carry It

Looking forward to Give The Drummer Some, which is set for release sometime this month. This is the next single, with Travis grabbing two of Wu’s finest to lay down a few bars.

I’m on the fence with the production as it sounds very stuck in the 1999-2001 rap-rock style, a sound I was hoping would be modernised and tweaked for this album. It is a nice listen from a retro perspective, naturally enhanced by the features, but as a longtime Travis fan this isn’t quite as dynamic as I’d hoped for. Worth a look nonetheless, as it is strong material in comparison to most of the tripe out there, just not quite up to Travis’ lofty standards.

Weekly Roundups

For this week’s Wu Wednesdays RZA brings back the Gravediggaz for a joint which sounds straight out of their 1994 debut. If you’re not familiar with Gravediggaz I honestly don’t have the strength to bother explain it to you so you are advised to visit here.

Secondly, we’ve got that new Crooked HHWR with Crook going in over Jay-Z and Usher’s Hot Toddy.

The Kickdrums and RZA-Perfect World

RZA keeps the left-field collabs coming, this time hooking up with The Kickdrums for a new single. I’ve not heard from The Kickdrums in quite a while, but do really enjoy their alternative sound.

This is definitely one more for the indie/alt-rock fans, as it’s a guitar-driven, edgy bit of music that is a refreshing change of pace to the alternative music being banded about at the moment. Not sure whether RZA quite fits in with the track unfortunately, it seems as though the feature is just to reel in the hip-hop fans familiar with their name from the remixes. Maybe his feature will grow on me though.

RZA, Justin Nozuka and Kobra Khan-Gone

Now we’re getting #WuWednesdays. Seriously, what’s happening?! Can artists only release music on certain days? Not to sound ungrateful though, as who doesn’t want new Wu?!

The features are definitely unusual, not just because they’re both quite unknown, but Nozuka is primarily an acoustic/folk artist too. My only previous exposure to Nozuka was a positive one though, with 2007′s Down In A Dirty Cold Well being a decent track. This is pretty good stuff too, with a sombre, soulful production complimenting some introspective rhymes from the RZA, and a haunting hook from Nozuka rounding off the track appropriately. Decent verse from Kobra too. Fans of the darker Joe Budden material (Indi) will really enjoy this.

Kanye West, RZA, Jay-Z, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz and Cyhi the Prynce-So Appalled

Friday has come and gone, and that means one thing-new Kanye. A short snippet of a rough version of this track leaked many moons ago, and the final version is another great hip-hop effort from ‘Ye.

From the lineup, the most intriguing features by far are RZA and Cyhi: for those who don’t know, Cyhi the Prynce signed to GOOD around the same time as Pusha T, and this marks my first taste of his music. His verse is decent, if unspectacular, but you have to appreciate his range of flows. Best verse probably goes to Jay-Z, as he comes through with some memorable lines (including a great Dark Knight reference).

Quick Blast: RZA, KRS-One and True Master

Quick blast for a quick track, clocking in at just under 3 minutes. From KRS and True Master’s upcoming collaborative album, RZA provides a guest verse for a vintage sounding track that will keep hip-hop heads happy.

Sunday's Classic Collabo: Sway & King Tech - The Anthem

The very definition of classic collaboration right here, this infamous track features: RZA, Tech N9ne, Eminem, Xzibit, Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, Jayo Felony, Chino XL & KRS-One. Kind of forgot about Classic Collabo this week, so hope this makes up for it! Amazing that this amount of stars came through and did this track, let alone a video! Throwback Thursdays Vol 33

The Gravediggaz are credited as one of the most influential horrorcore groups hip-hop has seen. In 1994, with their acclaimed 6 Feet Deep album, they laid the foundations for artists to come such as Big L, Eminem and Necro.

After widespread success, Prince Paul found himself between a rock and a hard place with regard to his label. To vent this frustration, Prince started to create a new, heavier sound but needed a crew to aid him. This is where he enlisted Wu-Tang’s RZA, fellow Stetsasonic MC; Frukwan, and Too Poetic to complete his quartet.

Throwback Thursdays Vol 25

Unfortunately I now find myself embroiled within my finals so the next three TT’s may be slightly more on the shorter side. That doesn’t mean for one second I’m going to skimp on the audio side of things though.

As promised from last week, today I’ve got a very clever track from GZA’s critically acclaimed sophomore Liquid Swords (contrary to popular belief, his debut was in fact Words From The Genius in 1991).

Quick Blast: Kanye West's New Album 'News'

A few news outlets are reporting that Kanye’s next album will feature production/assistance from RZA, Pete Rock and Q-Tip. There’s been a lot of talk that it’s going to be a ‘real rap’ album, and hopefully it’s true. The rumoured artists above add to that belief, and I’m looking forward to hearing some new stuff from it.

My prediction? Look for the first single/leak to drop by the summer.

Meth, Ghost and Rae-Our Dreams Video

It makes me laugh how the eclecticism of Monday has been completely wiped away by a barrage of hip-hop releases today. Crazy.

Visuals for the great RZA-produced track from their collaborative Wu-Massacre album (released next week). Haven’t watched this yet, but I expect them to deliver as the track itself is pretty good.

2010 Wake Up Show Anthem

I literally have no idea what the ‘Wake Up Show’ is, but this is one mega collabo. Some pretty big names involved in this one as you’ll see below, although the track isn’t amazing to be honest. Expected a lot more with some of the talent on show here, but still probably one worth checking out.

Random Funnies: Questlove, RZA, Parks and Recreation and more.

Being from the UK, I don’t really know much about Parks & Rec besides the fact it’s supposed to be hilarious, and the extremely funny Aziz Ansari is in it.

However, this video needs no background knowledge. A little while back, Questlove called the show ‘the Wu Tang of comedy’, and well…just watch!
