It’s always difficult to write on topics such as this, but it goes without saying that our thoughts at OTU go out to Trayvon’s friends and family across the pond. As most of our beloved following will know by now, the OTU Live team has been working endlessly behind the scenes to bring the UK the scintillating lineup of Reef The Lost Cauze, Slaine and Snowgoons’ DJ Illegal. Now it’s my turn to step up to the plate and drop some knowledge in support of OTU’s monumental movements. Escucha y aprende. On the audio side of things, the German production powerhouse bring super-charged violin chords to create that dramatic sense of purpose whilst Reef pumps us with the cold similarities between the streets and the various war’s the world finds itself embroiled in. Representing Philadelphia supergroup Army of the Pharaohs is Reef the Lost Cauze, who like Slaine will be joined live onstage by DJ Illegal- one half of Europe’s most talented production team, Snowgoons. With Reef and Snowgoons having recently teamed up to produce one of the 2011’s most anticipated albums in Your Favourite MC, this event will give UK fans the chance to see the masterpiece performed live, alongside the biggest tracks from Reef, Army Of The Pharaohs, and the Snowgoons’ considerable and critically-adored back catalogues. In a night of diverse collaborations, the support acts will be representative of London’s own musical diversity. Multi-talented and viewed as one of London’s best event hosts, Stig of the Dump will be gracing the stage with his trademark brand of humour, and a selection of his most exciting songs. In charge of the records for the night is DJ Snuff, a veteran of the hip-hop scene, who will also be unveiling his new collective: Caxton Press. Tickets are available RIGHT NOW. I’m still checking this out but Reks goes in on this and there are some absolute bangers to accompany his razor-sharp lyricism.
Quite often I find with Reks that his lyricism is streets ahead of his beat selection, but this is spot on. The beat has strong similarities to the rolling baseline that Premo used on Nas’ NY State Of Mind and is adequately heavy to keep the powerful delivery of Reks and Reef in check. It’s unusual to hear Stimuli over such a hard hitting baseline, but not for one second does he let it pass him by, switching up his flow whilst the instrumental drops in and out. Not that I condone drug abuse or anything, but you’d be a fool to miss out on this pure hip-hop ecstasy. From Reks’ In Between The Lines 2 Mixtape which you can download for FREE November 23rd. Three underground heavy hitters get together for a great collabo, that boasts a top production to accompany the undoubted lyrical skills of these guys-it’s a production worthy of the title, as it feels like a soundscape stolen straight from a slasher movie. I’ve been loving Sha’s work in recent months (Bucket List is ridiculous) but Reef takes the win for me, with his razor-sharp flows just edging Sha’s wordplay here. Blaq Poet-Movie Villains 2 ft. As you might tell I’m a massive advocate of the underground MC from Philadelphia. Reef is a regular member of the Army Of The Pharaohs and frequent collaborator with German production powerhouse Snowgoons. His 3rd album, Feast or Famine released in 2005 is an underground classic and sees Reef fully mature from a boy to a man. Eyes Of My Father is, to put it in Reef’s words, “some introspective sh*t” in which Reef chastises his relationship with his father over a heart-tugging backdrop. No doubt most of you will sleep on Reef and ignore this, but those who take the five seconds to click through will really appreciate this. |
