Following on from the superb DJ Premier and Berklee Symphony Orchestra track from a few days ago, the second track from the ReGeneration concept brings together a fantastic range of artists to infuse the wonderful New Orleans jazz style with a little hip-hop and soul.
Badu sounds as interested as I’ve heard her in a long time, as she comes through with a phenomenally addictive performance from start to finish, with vocals full of vibrancy and bounce that spans the range of genres to anchor them together in a cohesively funky sound. Zigaboo is relentless on the drums as he drives the track along, whilst Trombone Shorty provides energetic bursts of his horn that blend with the instrumentation brought by the Dap Kings to create a lovely feelgood vibe, with the overall combination proving a genuinely exceptional backdrop to Erykah’s vocals.
Another absolutely fantastic track from the ReGeneration project, and I hope this inspires more to try these styles out. In a music scene increasingly devoid of true character and worth to the music, the passion and purity of the music here makes for a brilliantly refreshing listen.

Two things you can always expect from Kanye’s GOOD Fridays: they’ll be late and they’ll contain fantastic line-ups.
Nothing spectacular on the production side, but it does have a rolling, progressive feel that helps to emphasise the motivational aspect of the track. Having said that, the instrumental breakdown about two-thirds of the way through is good and injects some energy. Mos Def typifies the motivational aspect with a decent hook, though Big Sean steals the show with his verse which is no mean feat given the line-up. He comes through with some good variety in his flows and comes with a passionate and emotional style that contrasts well with his usual laid-back style.

What a massive line-up this is, don’t you just love G.O.O.D. Fridays? This is a very laid back track, which suits Mos Def’s style (who opens up the track with arguably the best verse). Keep the G.O.O.D music coming Kanye!

Curren$y teams up with his Center Edge Territory buddies for the latest drop from his Pilot Talk album set to hit on the 13th July.
Ski Beatz on the production for this one. Not convinced with Curren$y’s lyrics, but one thing you can be sure is that Mos Def and Jay Electronica always bring the heat! Should be an interesting supergroup once it gets into full force. Slaughterhouse competition?

Time for some classic hip hop? This track (amongst others in the album) has helped me through the past few weeks of pain.
Mos Def’s Hip-Hop is the centerpiece of his 1999 classic debut Black On Both Sides. A brilliantly crafted piece of progressive, alternative hip-hop.

Been a very hip-hop based 24 hours, so let’s take it another way. I knew nothing about Goapele before this track, but a Google has led me to believe I probably should have. Really feeling this soulful track, and it’s a case of the Maxwell situation whereby I’m probably going to go back and check out the extensive back catalogue as a result!
Smooth, mellow vibes all the way through this one, and the Mos Def feature is a nice addition. If you’re after something with a classic, organic sound then this is definitely one to go for. You know my love of soul/neo-soul by now, and this certainly gets my stamp of approval. Night dwellers (talking 3am UK time here) are going to love this one.

After last week’s no show (sorry about that btw) I have two parts for you today. The first being a remix to the remix of the cracking track Tell Me by Bobby Valentino. The original has just Bobby V singing, the remix has Lil Wayne on it (with this version being released for the video) and the third version is the one I have for you, with Mos Def jumping on the track. Great verses, beat and vocals, better make sure you add this to your collection if you don’t have it already.

I don’t know much about this Ski Beatz guy (it’s technically his track) but have those 4 on guest spots is frankly incredible. What a line-up!! The real hip-hop heads will definitely be rushing to the link for this one.
The beat is pretty simple, but allows the rappers to take centre-stage. Each one does their own thing well, and you’d probably be a bit of an idiot to miss this one eh?

The second single drop of the evening, and the first from the upcoming Gorillaz album.
I have to be honest though, and I’m not too big on this (yet). Whilst the techno-tinged production is alright, this track has two problems with the features: First off, Mos Def is heavily underutilised. Secondly, this Bobby Womack dude on the track goes for absolute overkill and really goes a bit crazy with the vocals. Don’t get me wrong, he can sing but he is just over-the-top on this one and trying too hard. I think aside from that, the track is decent though.

That’s right! All these rappers on the same track, and although Busta and Kanye aren’t exactly held in the same esteem as the others on this track lyrically, they both also produce great verses.
A superb Kanye West produced beat, five quality verses, and an addictive chorus. In short just a classic song you do not want to miss out on – go get it below:

This collaboration is possibly the most unexpected one of the year.
For those of you who don’t know, The Black Keys are a rock/blues/indie band, who are pretty successful and globally known. Now, I just about handle Mos Def jumping on tracks like this as he’s a pretty melodic guy. But Jim Jones?
