Damn, what’s it with our old-schoolers getting back on it? First we have the Wu/Block connect coming hard, now not to be beaten, two-thirds of the Def Squad (plus the ever-present Mef) team up for a heater sounding straight out of ’95. This is some classic Erick Sermon right here and heads will be clamouring to get their hands on this.
We don’t know where this is from yet, but no complaints from the industry on this one.

When it matters, I’ll come through for you: 1 episode away from breaking all kinds of R&B records, and I’ve finally turned up on time. With this miracle taking place, what could I possibly serve up in next week’s edition to trump this? (great, I’ve just hyped something I haven’t come up with yet).

From Redman’s upcoming Reggie album due to drop December 7th. Red enlists long-time collaborator Mef to spit a very tidy verse and the help of everyone’s everyman Bun B who also smashes his bars to pieces. It’s the production which to a certain element lets this joint down; Not exactly the type of boardwork you would expect the East Coast duo over, and undoubtedly suits Bun’s Southern roots better. The chorus is terrible, but the verses make up for it. This will get a few spins though.

Fresh off his appearance at the BET cyphers, Reek comes through with a star-studded track. This will be the first studio track I’ve heard of his, and he’s definitely going to grab lots of attention with these features. Looking forward to the Method Man verse.

In 1999 two of New York’s finest MC’s came together to create not only one of the 90’s most memorable rap albums, but an album spearheaded by one of the 90’s most memorable rap songs.
That’s right, we’re talking Wu-Tang’s Method Man and Def Squad’s Redman with their debut LP Blackout! and their cornerstone single Da Rockwilder. The album’s hyped success saw it go platinum less than three months after it’s release date and is considered amongst many hip-hop advocates as a debut classic.

The year 1998, during which time one of the best rappers around collaborated with one of the best R&B/neo soul singers about. As you can see and hear in the video to the left, this track is about relationship troubles that Method Man had been experiencing.
Also, did you notice 50 Cent in this video? Several years before you had even heard of him, and I presume this was before his infamous How To Rob track that led to troubles with Method Man’s Wu-Tang brethren (amongst others).
D’Angelo used to be so cool, what the hell happened to him? Anyway, if you like what you hear, grab the mp3 below.

It makes me laugh how the eclecticism of Monday has been completely wiped away by a barrage of hip-hop releases today. Crazy.
Visuals for the great RZA-produced track from their collaborative Wu-Massacre album (released next week). Haven’t watched this yet, but I expect them to deliver as the track itself is pretty good.

New Wu on the horizon kids and kidettes. Wu producer DJ Mathematics is bringing the heat with a new wu project, complete with exclusives, recorded between 2000 through to 2008. I’m expecting some nice remixes on this joint and look forward to its release date on 16th Feb of this year. After the click is the track listing. Be sure to check it.
The single Clap 2010 can be copped right below and features the wu heavyweights Rae, Meth and Ghost. (It states U-God makes an appearance so unless over time my ears have become immune to his ‘standing-out-like-a-sore-thumbness-shitness’ then I must be mistaken). Although I’m really looking forward to the album dropping next month, I’m actually relativley disappointed with this remix. Although saying that, I wasn’t crazy about the original. I guess that’s why it was only a hidden bonus track (3:53 onwards – but don’t skip it because the outro Jah World is awesome)…

In what can best be described as a fitting coincidence given the retrospective nature of this particular post, 2009 was very much a year of hindsight. I rediscovered artists I’d neglected, I discovered artists who I’d simply ignored, but most importantly I began to see the fundamental flaw in my appreciation of music (especially hip-hop) and how I probably got it wrong.

Well, this is the final clearout from the last 2 days, after which I’m back on sentry duty and posting it on the minute I get it. This is a pretty nice collection too, with Drake, Sadé (that’s right!), Rev Run (that’s right!), Wale and more making appearances.

You may recall some time ago, I wrote a post in which I put up a couple of tracks from some underground hip-hop artists that you might have missed.
Well, it’s back again, and there are some artists in here that you’ve probably never heard of, and some you may have. Either way, between them they provide music to suit a variety of hip-hop styles.
