Jon Connor – The Way I Am

Not as potent as the original, but nevertheless a solid attempt by the Michigan spitter Jon Connor. 13th April is the date for Jon’s ‘all Eminem beats’ album entitled The People’s Rapper LP. Catch up on on the last instrumental (Soldier) he tackled here.

Jon Connor – Soldier Freestyle

This is very apt for me right now as I’ve been bumping lots of early Em over the past few days (mainly SSLP and MMLP). Connor is one of the only emcees out right now that could come anywhere close to replicating the original. And by word does he. I can guarantee this will be on heavy repeat as his punchy bars perfectly compliment the menacing original Eminem instrumental. April 13th Jon drops The People’s Rapper LP which will see him going in over only Em beats. Definitely one to look out for.

Jon Connor-No Thrillz

There’s a reason Jon Connor was co-signed by Nas: he brings heat on the mic. I’ve been a big fan of the Michigan spitter for a little under a year now and although I was disappointed with his last project Salvation, drops like this give me enough faith in the strength of his upcoming sequel.

The beat on this is all proportions of epic. It’s powerful, unashamedly brash and allows Connor to drop those passionate lyrics he’s starting to become known for. Don’t expect to be hearing Jon Connor on the radio anytime soon, but underground heads should be lapping this one up.

Peter Rosenberg & Popchips Present : What's Poppin Vol. 1

Normally, I don’t go for these ‘personality hosted’ mixtapes as they just tend to be a mish-mash of readily-available tracks. However, the ever-entertaining Peter Rosenberg (one of the few prominent lovers of both hip-hop and wrestling!) has really pulled off something special here, with a 23-track project full of original material from the likes of Raekwon, Odd Future, Kendrick Lamar, Asher Roth, Childish Gambino and many more. There’s even a Macho Man Randy Savage interlude!

Needless to say, this looks like a must-have for all hip-hop fans, and alongside the glut of rap gargantuans, there are a couple of ‘middle-ground’ names on here I’ve been looking to get into, whilst I’m sure we’ll also be introduced to a few new and upcoming stars. To quote Peter, ‘With so much BS out there — sometimes it’s hard to find what’s really poppin. Well I did the work for you. Enjoy.’

Jon Connor-Broken Mirror

Jon Connor has been slowly building his empire over the past five years but has only really come to the fore-front of most bloggers’ minds since the turn of the New Year. The Flint, Michigan emcee draws comparison to Elzhi and Reks and with co-signs from Scarface and Nas proves that hip-hop is alive and well. Perhaps the most difficult rap-name to Google (hint: Terminator) his upcoming project Salvation will soon be under my scrutiny, but until then visit his bandcamp and hit the drop below for a little taster of some quality raps and top production.

Jon Connor ft Saigon and Consequence-The Message (remix)

For my first post after returning from a nice stay at the hospital, and a dose of swine flu (get your violins out please), I’m bringing you a nice gift with some good old fashioned hip-hop.

Now I wasn’t familiar with Jon Connor before I’d heard this joint, but with bars like these I’ll certainly keep an eye for the guy as he more than holds his own alongside both rap mainstays Saigon and Consequence, who come through with sharp verses themselves. A must listen for any hip-hop fan out there.

Jon Connor-Generation Next Freestyle

Just Blaze’s No Love was just destined to be ripped over and over again. The original recipient Em, ripped it on one of the best verses I’ve heard from him in years. Busta then rips it apart on certainly one of the best verses I’ve heard him spit in years. Then we’ve got Jon Connor. A chap I know very little about, but on evidence from his few bars here, I will undoubtably be checking for him in the future. Yep, you guessed it. He rips it.
