The first single from J.Y.’s recent street album – The Slave Shift: Waking Down. Called Little Maria, this is a song that typifies J.Y.’s intricate storytelling ability alongside a very likeable flow, and with Michael Charles coming through with a powerful hook, gives this track all the elements it needs to portray the dark mood of the song. Check out the official video for this to the left, and click here to download it.
Another track released from the street album is The Sun’s Not Enough which has a more classic hip hop undertone, click over here to grab this track.

Big fan of this rapper’s last project, The Hiring Process Mixtape, and I thoroughly enjoyed his collaboration with Nipsey Hu$$le that Liam posted recently. With that in mind, I had no qualms with downloading this new street album by J.Y. who (in association with DJBooth.net) has made available for free. I’m positive that this will be great, and you should be too.

New Jersey emcee J.Y. links up with Nipsey Hu$$le and Young Scolla to bring us this joint, which is set to be on J.Y’s soon to be released The Slave Shift: Waking Down. As you can probably guess from the track title it’s an uplifting piece of hip-hop.
For me, this is an excellent track. J.Y. and Nipsey spit about their efforts to get to the top of the hip-hop game and their self belief that it will happen. The star of the show though has to be Young Scolla on the hook, the guy has talent and I’ll be looking out for a lot more of his work. Also, there’s something about the piano on a hip-hop track that really works for me. Make sure you have a listen, you won’t regret it.

Been really impressed by this J.Y. dude, I’m still listening to his mixtape now, over two months after its release!
Here are the latest visuals from that mixtape, for a track called melting pot. Melting pot being a metaphor for America, and the many different cultures blended into one. Excellent track with some powerful visuals.
You can go grab the mixtape this is from over here.

Here’s some visuals for a party J.Y. held for the release of his recent project, Hiring Process. A great mixtape/album that is too.
Some cameos in this video from the likes of Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Freeway, & Avery Storm + more.
Go here to grab the mixtape you didn’t the first time.

I don’t know much/anything about Woody, and I’m sure there are many of you in the same boat. What I do know is that he’s clearly a smart guy: an upcoming rapper releases a new mixtape, so how do you grab attention?
First off, get a great artwork designed, and secondly get some good features involved (Charles Hamilton, XV and more). Both very simple moves, yet not adhered to by enough artists. It lets people know you’re creative, interesting and other artists clearly see something in you. Upcoming artists, take note. On this basis, I’m hoping the music lives up to the expectations set by the bits surrounding it though, and it isn’t just smoke and mirrors!

This dropped the other day, but I’ve only just had a chance to check it out and I must say this is mightily impressive!
“Featuring Killer Mike, Joe Budden, Cory Gunz, Freeway, Young Chris, Joell Ortiz, Jim Jones and Red Cafe; with production from Ski Beatz, Bink!, Omen, Buckwild, The Klasix, Nard n B and The HeatMakerz.”
This mixtape right here is better than the majority of albums I’ve heard this year. And that is no overstatement, this guy (as far as I’m aware) has seemingly come out from nowhere. The beats on this are all great, the features on this are all rappers I rate pretty highly and J.Y. himself can really rap. He’s most certainly one to look out for in the future and this mixtape, which you can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track, is a must have.
Video to the left is of two tracks, one of them featuring Red Cafe. Download link for the mixtape is below, not one to be missed folks.

New leak from the upcoming J.Y. mixtape, The Hiring Process. This one features the talented XV and is my favourite of the three leaks thus far. Mixtape is out in 2 days time, in case you were wondering.

Another one from that upcoming mixtape by J.Y. Here he goes in on a track from Drake’s album (about 1:40 onwards in the video), some good hip-hop here, be sure to get that mixtape when it drops (I certainly will be). Audio for the Miss Me freestyle can be taken by clicking below.

This is some real chilled hip-hop for you here, and with it being 4am (here in the UK anyway) what more can you ask for? This is off J.Y.’s upcoming mixtape, The Hiring Process (artwork to the left).
Those who read last week’s R&B Friday will recognise the name Avery Storm, who delivers a likeable chorus which adds to the chilled out nature to this song.
