Let’s be honest, the cyphers are the only reason people watch/care about the BET Awards. I mean, does anyone really know who won what last year? Nope, but I bet you could list a few of the cypher rappers.
Great cypher line-ups this year, with the video for the G.O.O.D. Music cypher (Kanye, Common, Big Sean, Pusha T and CyHi Da Prynce) being up here. After the click, there are great cyphers involving Wiz Khalifa, Mickey Factz, Raekwon, Yelawolf, Royce Da 5’9″, Rev Run and family, Ice Cube and family and so on.
For me, the respective winners: Big Sean, Yelawolf, Mickey, Royce and Ice Cube. Honourable mentions to CyHi, Bones Brigante, Diamond and Diggy.

Two days from Cube’s I Am The West release presents an appropriate time to drop some of his best work. Surprise, surprise, alongside Dr. Dre.
Dre drops a haunting West Coast classic for the duo to trade verses. Every bar of Cube’s lines delivered as if they are punching you square in the face.
Great, cinematic video to accompany too.

I didn’t know who to pick for the picture, so please enjoy this welcome dose of hilarity.
I’ve never heard of Ray Rizzy but he’s grabbed 9 other names for this track, and some of them are pretty big deals. Ice Cube would be the standout in the list, especially given that the nature of the other guests (Lil’ Jon, Garrett etc.) implies this will probably be fairly poppy and club-oriented.

Ice Cube is sure to keep the West Coast relevant with what will be a monster album from him, going by this trailer and previous leaks.

Nice visuals for Cube’s lead single from his September 28th release: I Am The West.
Although Cube quashed any rumours of a beef, he was definitely taking shots at both Em and Dre with a couple of those lines in there.

Cube hasn’t been afraid recently to speak his mind on the current state of hip-hop. And rightly so in my opinion. After all, much has changed since he was running the show back in the late 80′s/early 90′s.
Official audio here for Cube’s controversial Drink The Kool Aid which serves as Cube’s latest single for his provocatively-titled, September release: I Am The West. When Cube performed this joint a few months back it raised a few eyebrows although he was quick to quash any rumours of brewing beefs. The most interesting pick of the bunch:
“I ain’t the Doctor / This ain’t the patient / This ain’t that nigga always on vacation / This ain’t no white boy’s rehabilitation.”

A short version of this song was used for a BET show (also called Live From L.A.) and the video for this track premiered on that show some 11 years ago! We have only now managed to get our hands on the a cd quality version of this track, which features three West Coast legends. Grab this nice summer song below.

Couple of collabos here with some decent line-ups on them. Good to get some new music from Bishop Lamont, and the Lakers Anthem should make for pretty good listening too. Pretty tired right now, so forgive the ‘quick blast’.

Just a quick one from me. Gave this a brief listen and it sounded fantastic, with The Legendary Roots Crew adding their spin to a live performance from Ice Cube of Straight Outta Compton. Makes for a nice refresh of the classic original, and always good to hear that Roots originality applied anywhere.

Unfortunately for most of you, my posts are going to be sporadic and quick for the next 10 days. Beginning that pattern with the latest from Cube, which will be interesting to check out given the recent back-and-forth with the ‘New West’ that he’s been involved in.

This was to be known as the reunion track for N.W.A. Having split up in 1991, this was the first time they had all got on a song together in 9 years, minus Easy-E of course, who sadly passed away in 1995 (also conveniently forgetting DJ Yella too, but he didn’t rap so I’m not counting him either).
A very important track for the West Coast, as the whole ‘gangsta’ rap scene had pretty much died down (no pun intended) after 2Pac’s death. This, along with Dre’s classic The Chronic 2001 album, brought this type of music back to the spotlight in Hip Hop. The chorus on the track is pretty significant with what they were trying to achieve, “I started this gangsta sh*t/And this the motherf*cking thanks I get?”, which was also the 1st line on a track on Dre’s album. N.W.A, commonly known as the pioneers of gangsta rap, were one of if not the most controversial rap group of all time (Wu-Tang might have something to say about that though). From 1986 to 1991 had been banned from many radio stations, stopped from going on tours and even received letters from the FBI due to the nature of the lyrical content of their songs. Despite this, the group sold over 9 million records in the US alone. In early 1990, Ice Cube felt he wasn’t being paid right, considering he wrote almost half of N.W.A’s most successful album.

This is part 1 of 2 West Coast goodies I’ve got for you today.
Ice Cube drops a dedication to the Oakland Raiders, and it’s a pretty good track. It’s a perfect pre-match anthem, and NFL fans (you know who you are) will definitely enjoy this. It’s definitely worth picking up whether you are or aren’t an NFL fan though, as it’s an energetic, intense track that only Ice Cube (and maybe M.O.P.) could produce.
