Another short episode in terms of new tracks, but that’s the price we pay for me being forced (Murray’s been begging me) to deliver this on time. However, I’ve opted to use this ‘free space’ to throw in something a little different: I’ve included a couple of throwback tracks that you may be unfamiliar with, but are certainly worthy of attention. Would love to hear some feedback on them too, as I’d like to incorporate throwbacks more often!
This week’s recap is Chris Brown heavy, with a feature on both Keri Hilson’s latest video and Big Sean’s first video from his debut album, as well as a brand new video of his own from F.A.M.E. There’s also a new video from Lloyd, and a great track that didn’t make Frank Ocean’s brilliant mixtape.

Tiny bit off the pace on this one, for which I apologise. Having listened to it today, I must say I was surprised by the diversity Kendrick’s shown here, both in his beat selection and rapping style.
We’re treated to a really relaxing, smoothed-out track that stands up as one of the better chillout hip-hop beats in recent months. There’s a touch of class and real quality about the production, with atmospheric elements alongside light synths and samples, all combining together for a very enjoyable listen. Kendrick doesn’t disappoint with the raps either, tackling a range of subjects with a captivating and clear flow. Thankfully, Gucci’s appearance is restricted to hook duty, meaning he doesn’t ruin the smooth flavour of this track too much. Odd choice of feature either way though, there are dozens of other/better rappers that would have fitted brilliantly on this. Still, a great track and probably the strongest (of the very few) of his I’ve heard to date.

Diddy just let this one loose on Twitter, and I assume it’s the official remix to the track. Once again, a T-Pain remix has become part of the official remix (Black and Yellow being the other example), and it’s a good thing as his remixes have been very good in recent weeks.
We do also have to deal with a Gucci Mane verse, though in honesty it’s not too terrible and does fit in line with the track fairly well. However, it has to be said that Pain’s contribution is certainly the highlight, as he throws in a new intro, as well as retaining his contributions to the hook and adlibs.

A more digestable episode this week, which makes a nice change for us all having had a few extended instalments in recent weeks.
Outside of this episode, it’s been a fairly quiet week for R&B, with just the three notables: a video for Rihanna and Drake’s collaboration, new music from UK upcomer Talay Riley, and the latest drop from Trey Songz’s upcoming mixtape.

I don’t particularly like either Gucci or Ross as rappers, but their beat selection is superb at times. The original of this has been a guilty pleasure track for me, purely on the strength of the beat. I can’t deny that Ross fits this beat perfectly too, fans of the original will enjoy this.

Produced by Zaytoven, who almost exclusively produces tracks for Atlanta artists (despite being neither born or raised there) gives us another one of his famous infectious ‘keyboard beats’, of which, I know for certain, one avid OTU reader enjoys.
Anyway Gucci does what Gucci does best, uses his flow to rap in synch with the production to make a song very easy listening. Probably a leak from his upcoming album, I haven’t bothered to check!

Is imitation REALLY the sincerest form of flattery? This beat sounds identical to T.I.’s Whatever You Like from start to finish, whilst Estelle comes across as a Mary J. Blige impressionist. I normally don’t mind Estelle’s work, but this doesn’t suit her. The less said about Gucci, the better.

I’m not sure if this is an official remix, but I suspect it is based on the star names included on the remix, and the slight changes to the beat. I’m not huge on the original, and this remix almost explains why: it’s a beat much more suited to a rap style, and takes Trey too far away from what he’s good at.
Wiz does a decent job on this beat, and unsurprisingly takes the prize for best verse. Gucci’s verse is more tolerable than usual, but probably because its surrounded by Trey/Wiz vocals, and hence benefits from association.

This is surprisingly good. I’m assuming Pharrell produced this one, and he’s laid out one of those velvety-smooth beats that he serves up from time-to-time. It even makes Gucci bearable: that is, however, a lie. He’s still poor.
Nicki steals the show as far as the vocals go with another great feature, coming through with a solid flow, though Pharrell’s memorable hook is definitely not far behind. The beat is the real winner here though, as I’m a huge fan of these atmospheric, soft summer beats.

I have to be honest: I really like this beat. As Indi said, it’s like a lighter version of On To The Next One and is really replayable. What is it with these poor rappers getting great beats?! Audio can be found at the above Indi reference.

The very definition of mainstream hip-hop right here (I sense Murray has just felt a twinge of anger). If you’re a fan of any of these artists then you’ll very much like this song, that’s all I’m going to say.

Another one from that random mixtape full of exclusives (see here, here and here), this is one that I wasn’t expecting much from, I was wrong – this is good. Yelawolf validates my recent thoughts towards him by coming through with two excellently delivered verses and I even found myself really liking Gucci’s flow on this too, which is pretty disturbing tbh. Really good beat here by Swizz Beatz, (like a lighter version of On To The Next One) with Gucci managing to not embarrass himself on. Worth a listen, especially for you Dirty South lovers.

Travie lets loose of what appears to be the official remix of his hit Billionaire. It’s not just a couple of verses tacked on either, as the beat has been retooled along with the addition of the verses. Goes without saying that I’m not even going to entertain the Gucci verse (which is thankfully right at the end, so you can skip it!) but everything else is good.

49 episodes in, and the fantastic material still keeps coming. The common theme of recent weeks has been a frightening consistency in the quality, as we’ve seen some superb R&B tracks being let loose in anticipation of the summer. Whereas previous R&B Fridays have been a bit of a struggle to fill/review, the past few weeks have certainly made my (busy) life a lot easier!
This week is no different, and you’ve got some very good stuff to look forward to in your immediate future from the likes of Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Amerie and many more. Not as many lesser-known names as there usually are, instead we’ve got the more established names looking to make their mark. Click on to let them know if they got it right.

Obviously Gucci Mane’s verses on this are a massive pile of ‘meh’, but Ludacris more than makes up for it with another blistering verse.

So a few things. Firstly, I love this track, and think they worked the Lloyd sample in brilliantly. If you missed it first time, don’t make the same mistake twice and be sure to grab it here as it’s an absolute gem.
Secondly, the video is good. It’s pretty much exactly what I’d pictured it to be, with bright sunny scenes, and a generally chilled feel to the whole thing. No Gucci appearance seeing as he’s behind bars.
Finally, sorry about the excessive advertising on this video. WSHH seem to be really insecure (yeah I said it, sue me). I’ll replace it as soon as it’s rehosted without the OTT ads.

Shouts to my co-writers for holding it down for the last 24 hours.
I’m back, and I’m bringing visuals for one of the great party jams around. Wale’s Pretty Girls gets a really feel-good video, and definitely has me playing the track all over again (swack the audio here). Can’t wait to see this track blow up, as it’s great club music and it’s Wale!
Wale definitely displays buckets of charisma too, and it definitely makes the video even easier to watch. Good job.

Gucci Mane is alright, yeah I said it – he’s not that bad. He makes decent music, despite being lyrically terrible (apparently he’s using his time in jail to become more lyrical somehow).
Two new tracks, the first has a haunting beat that I’m a big fan of and the second track is a feature on a new Cam’ron track, with a beat and flow that sounds a lot like Soulja Boy’s Kiss Me Thru The Phone – and I don’t mean that in a bad way.
Both of these tracks are a little on the short side so I assume proper versions will be released in the near future, which I’ll post once available. I’d recommend you grab these in the mean time though mos def.
