Hip-hop. That’s what (I hope) we’re all here for right? Well it don’t get no better than this. Wu and The LOX come through with their first offering from their upcoming collaborative album Wu-Block. RZA crafts driving horns yet thankfully mixes things up sporadically throughout tailoring things perfectly for each emcees to drop those characteristically heavy bars. Now this is some Supreme Clientele Ghostface. Top stuff.

I don’t normally do this as it’s lazy journalism, and if there’s such a thing I’m sure it’s internet plagiarism too, but this is a brilliantly accurate review which perfectly mirrors my views. Props to The Fader for this.

Not going to lie, I wasn’t at all impressed by the original of this Swizz Beatz production, however with T.I., Ghostface, Cam’ron and (recently set free from prison) DMX on this, my attention has been attained. Makes the whole track a much more enjoyable experience to my ears, and it should do for yours too. Go download this below.

In case you missed Rae’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II when it dropped last September then after sorting your life out, please find below my favourite joint from the album.
I always think Cold Outside is directly comparable with Rainy Dayz from the album’s father LP; again my favourite track. It features a cold, harrowing beat which Rae and Ghost lay some smooth rhymes all tied together by upcomer Suga Bang Bang.

It makes me laugh how the eclecticism of Monday has been completely wiped away by a barrage of hip-hop releases today. Crazy.
Visuals for the great RZA-produced track from their collaborative Wu-Massacre album (released next week). Haven’t watched this yet, but I expect them to deliver as the track itself is pretty good.

I’m filling in for Indi this week, as he’s a little busy today: good luck with the sex change!
Taking a leaf out of Murray’s playbook, this one is to educate the newer hip-hop fans as a lot of the older heads will already know this joint: Rainy Dayz, probably my favourite track from Raekwon’s timeless Only Built 4 Cuban Linx album.
The combination of Wu affiliate Blue’s soulful vocals, the brilliant, atmospheric and almost haunting RZA beat and a couple of superb verses from Ghostface and Rae make this one of the most listenable tracks for newcomers to the Wu style, and one of the most repeatable tracks for those familiar with it. Undoubtedly a classic in my eyes, and a must-have in any hip-hop fan’s collection.

Ghostface Killah: One ninth of the hardcore, street sounds of the Wu Tang Clan. So I’m going to drop some heavy, rapid-fire Ghost track from perhaps Supreme Clientele? Or maybe the high-energy Run with Jadakiss from his Pretty Toney album? I could have. They do after all depict Ghost as we have come to know and love.
You know me by now though; that would be too easy. This is a show stopper. A real classic…

I was in bed last night pondering upon a question I had been asked by @RupeshB: Who did I think was the most consistently on point rapper throughout their career? The answer I gave couldn’t have been a freshman MC (hell even I could be consistent for five minutes) and therefore had to be someone who had seen the changes in the demands of the genre; Someone who had spanned the 90’s and 00’s; Someone who had not necessarily cemented his stature in the hip-hop hall of fame; Merely someone who, throughout their career, has consistently brought a high standard of rapping ability time and time again and yet is still doing it to this very day.

New Wu on the horizon kids and kidettes. Wu producer DJ Mathematics is bringing the heat with a new wu project, complete with exclusives, recorded between 2000 through to 2008. I’m expecting some nice remixes on this joint and look forward to its release date on 16th Feb of this year. After the click is the track listing. Be sure to check it.
The single Clap 2010 can be copped right below and features the wu heavyweights Rae, Meth and Ghost. (It states U-God makes an appearance so unless over time my ears have become immune to his ‘standing-out-like-a-sore-thumbness-shitness’ then I must be mistaken). Although I’m really looking forward to the album dropping next month, I’m actually relativley disappointed with this remix. Although saying that, I wasn’t crazy about the original. I guess that’s why it was only a hidden bonus track (3:53 onwards – but don’t skip it because the outro Jah World is awesome)…

In what can best be described as a fitting coincidence given the retrospective nature of this particular post, 2009 was very much a year of hindsight. I rediscovered artists I’d neglected, I discovered artists who I’d simply ignored, but most importantly I began to see the fundamental flaw in my appreciation of music (especially hip-hop) and how I probably got it wrong.

So I think we are all in agreement: 2009 has been quite a year for hip-hop. It has seen the return of Em, Jay has completed his Blueprint trilogy and 50 has had so much beef you would think he will be full up for Xmas (*cringes*. Yeah that was bad).
Aside from the big names dropping their albums, we have also seen some highly anticipated underground acts dropping LP’s too. This is my Best Of ’09 list and contains some real gems so don’t let the year go past before getting your hands on these.
