Say what you want about Game, but he’s got a good publicity team behind him as he preps for his fifth studio album (F.I.V.E: Fear Is Victory’s Evolution) with the DJ Skee-assisted mixtape California Republic.
Latest drop is this little soulful number enlisting help from Fat Joe and Young Chris who spit welcome verses between them. With regards to the upcoming LP, I personally was disappointed with Game’s last offering as a whole (bar a few excellent tracks) in comparison to his first three LP’s, so I hope the next effort is a much more rounded effort from the West Coast spitter.

A really weak week for R&B music, with most of this week’s decent content already released by the rising stars of the genre: Jhene Aiko’s latest video, Patrick Stump’s cover of Shutterbugg, Jesse Boykins’ newest visuals and Bridget Kelly’s first EP. The delay this week (as has been the case multiple times in recent months) has been purely down to a lack of content, and it’s an interesting scenario that R&B faces at the minute with such a dearth of top-class talent. In other news Fat Joe is reported to have lost 88 pounds. He cites losing seven friends to heart-attacks was the wake up call he needed and over the past 9 months has opted to slim down by exercising and eating small, more frequent meals.
He said new nicknames his friends use on him are ”Skinny Joe” and “Joey Flaco” (a take on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and a spin on “Flaco” being the Spanish term for “thin”). “I think I gotta ask Diddy what my new name is.”

Is this the longest title we’ve ever seen on OTU? It’s certainly up there! DJ Khaled enlists a plethora of rappers to take on the remix of his recent(ish) single, Welcome To The Hood.
I can’t be the only one, but I’m pretty tired of these remixes by him where he just sticks a load of guest verses on it and expects a hit. Having said that I really wanted to hear the Game verse on this and thus had to check it out. I’m also pretty sure there’s a lot of you out there who still lap this stuff up, so who am I to hate on it?
Summary: I don’t like this and I didn’t like the original either, you might though.

Fat Joe takes things back to the streets with Respect Mine/Firewater collaborator Raekwon. This beat is on some East Coast epicness and Joey Crack spits that old school, Fat Jiddo steelo which makes up for the fact Rae just does that annoying 50 Cent trait of talking out the remaining bars. No idea what this is from, just find it as a welcome addition to my iTunes.

Mickey Factz progresses furthermore on his road to becoming a prominent name in this hip-hop game with two pretty big features on this recent song of his. Great coup and definitely enhances what was already a very good track.

Remember when these all-star guest tracks were rare? Those were the days. It seems like there’s one every couple of days, which massively dilutes their novelty.

Some superb stuff in our August snapshot which perfectly compliments the closing of summer as we welcome autumn with open arms. We’ve mixed old school with new school to create that sound which will have you rocking out until next month’s episode. New material from the likes of Atmosphere, Usher, Fat Joe, Sage Francis, Lil Wayne and Drake all sit comfortably next to some classic older joints from Damien Rice, Linkin Park, Kanye West, and of course, Eric B and Rakim.

Whilst the self-proclaimed kings of New York were battling it out for the throne, attention had turned to the underground where the streets were going crazy for the hip-hop supergroup Diggin’ In The Crates crew.
In early 1990 Lord Finesse brought together some of the most talented producers, DJ’s and MC’s in the game who would later become one of the most respected hip-hop group’s of all time. Diamond D, Showbiz, A.G., O.C., Buckwild, Fat Joe and finally Big L one-by-one eventually teamed up to form the legendary D.I.T.C.

We all know now that Fat Joe’s centrepiece to his Darkside Vol 1 is the modern-day classic, DJ Premier cut: I’m Gone.
Quick video here of the two breaking down exactly how the record came about. I know Joey dedicated his joint to Guru, but doesn’t it seem a bit insensitive he made Premo send over not one, but two beats even though Premo’s man had just passed?!
Joe speaks a lot shit (especially lately), but can’t hate on his closing words.

LOADS of stuff to get through this morning (BST) so of course my speakers have decided to pack in. Hence perhaps a lack of precise analytical ability today.
Onto business, first up is Crooked I’s part 4 of his “swagger jacked” hip-hop weekly series (aimed no doubt at Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Fridays). Here he spits over Fat Joe’s summer hit If It Ain’t About Money. Not his best verses, but certainly does a better job than Joey Crack.

If you know me, you’ll know I love a good sample or two.
Here I am rocking Atmosphere’s Say Hey There just happily allowing Ant’s instrumentals to play through (which I would later realise were the bulk of the sample) when at 2:46 the unmissable piano keys cut in and I’m thinking “shit, I know that from somewhere!” After scratching my head (and most probably balls somewhat) I find Fat Joe’s, L.E.S. produced, Crack Attack.
A quick google and here we are. Raekwon also sampled The East St. Louis Gospelettes for his OB4CL2 joint with Beanie Sigel and fans of Charles Hamilton will also recognise the sampling from his Dr. Kevorkian joint!

Fat Joe brings out Joell Ortiz to perform Big Pun’s verses from the insane Dre/Snoop/187-remake: Twinz.
Great choice Joey. Ortiz respects, almost idolises, over fellow Latino Pun and I feel that if anyone has the right (and ability!) to spit those ridiculous tongue-twisters (Heads – you know the one in particular I’m talking about), then Ortiz is the man.

Illmatic, Enter The Wu Tang, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, The Infamous, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die, Mecca And The Soul Brother, Tical, Lifestyles Ov Da Poor N Dangerous, Doe Or Die, The Low End Theory.
I’m hoping these albums strike some sort of chord with you. They should do. They form part of the 1990’s best hip-hop records ever released, never mind just East Coast. I’ve read countless blogs, Amazon lists, Wikipedia articles, Last.fm pages, magazines and books where these albums feature almost predictably on everyone’s (mine included) “best of’s”, “albums to listen before you die” and “real hip-hop” playlists and no doubt will continue to as long as hip-hop remains in existence.
My point? What about those undeniable records of genius simply overshadowed by the above? The ones which fell victim not to the quality of the music itself, but merely the timing of its release. In an industry today where even the truly beautiful flowers are unable to rise above the magnitude of towering weeds, how impossible would it have been for such a flower to rise above a 100ft tree full in blossom? Put it this way, I wouldn’t have wanted my release date on April 19th 1994.

One perhaps the more hip-hop orientated may enjoy (dare I say, even Murray?), this is a track that samples a track by The Firm and also a drum loop reminiscent of Nas’ I Know I Can. A delightful track which reminds me a lot of Mary J. Blige (obviously a great thing).
So it was only a matter of time a rapper got up on this, a little disappointed it wasn’t Nas, but Fat Joe will do!

Having always had his back on the strength of Represent, Jealous One’s Envy and Don Cartagena, I’m looking forward to The Darkside to see if he really has begun to listen to his long-term fans and bring that Joey Crack we know he is capable of.

Fat Joe kind of a fell off for a minute or two, but he has on his hands a hit here (thanks largely to Trey Songz), if he continues on making songs like this as well as the grimey tracks he was renowned for, then maybe he’ll fall back on.

My brother has a random hip-hop knowledge, in part, inflicted upon him by myself. I was sat in the living room when Fat Joe’s Slow Down (HaHa) popped into my head and like you do I blurted out the ‘HaHa‘ for no real apparent reason.
He looks up and says to me: “Was that what I think it was?” Thinking he is going to return with some obscure indie song he plays Juggaknots Clear Blue Skies to which I’m pretty stoked that 1) my brother could recognise that sample in my voice and 2) that Joey would sample such a throwback joint.
Upon investigation, turns out that both are actually sampled from London-based Soul II Soul’s 1989 hit Back To Life, which upon listen, I’m pretty sure you will be familiar with.

It took me a while to take Fat Joe seriously, I’d always dismissed his skills on the mic due to the persistent rumours that he didn’t write his own music, says the N word a lot despite being white/latino and the fact that he’s fat. That all changed when I heard his track ‘My Lifestyle’, this is a track that took my attention immediately with the beat blasting out of my speakers, with a chorus that is just as good. He could be spitting the worst lyrics in the world and it wouldn’t even matter on this track. What I have for you today is the remix to this featuring a much welcomed verse from notorious feature-killer, Jadakiss, as well as former Fat Joe affiliate, Remy Ma. I’ve forever been a Joe critic (rightly or wrongly), but this is a pretty nice mainstreamy summer track. I like the beat a lot, as it has a decent mixture of summer vibes and old-school hip-hop elements, which makes for some likeable and diverse listening. Trey always comes through with great vocals, and delivers a pretty catchy hook on this one.
Set to be the first single on Joe’s upcoming album, it’s a good start (although the rest of the album will apparently be much less mainstream).
