Here’s the new mixtape by Fashawn, as promised yesterday. Given the strength of yesterday’s track that I posted and the stuff I’ve heard Fashawn come out with in recent times, I fully expect this mixtape to be incredibly good.
Definitely one of the best from the underground hip hop circuit about and with the likes of J. Cole, Common, John Legend, GLC and Gilbere Forte all on the list of features on this mixtape, it shouldn’t disappoint.

Every time I hear new Fashawn material I never fail to be impressed, in fact I’d say he’s incredibly underrated. J. Cole obviously feels the same way, with this track being the first of 3 collaborations (2 that J. Cole spits on and 3 tracks he produces in total) between the two of them on this new mixtape of Fashawn’s, Higher Learning 2. Fashawn, much like J. Cole, is often likened to the legend that is Nas.
The track, which is wonderfully produced by J. Cole himself, is a real nice slice of hip hop. However it is way too short for my liking; I’m hoping it’ll be longer on the mixtape itself (which we’ll drop on OTU too).
The mixtape, which is out tomorrow, has some pretty awesome artwork! A black Bart Simpson…what the hell!?

J. Cole is an interesting artist. Obviously we’re huge fans here at OTU, but I’ve never quite figured out why I find myself playing his music more than artists I’d call my ‘favourites’. He’s a good rapper, but not yet the finished article, and has very good beat selection, but not perfect. Both completely understandable for any artist, let alone a relatively new one. So what is it?
The replayability factor. He has it absolutely nailed down. You’ll rarely listen to a Cole track just once, and this is another example of that. Something about his connection with a production is very unique, and will be crucial to his success.
Anyway, Relaxation has a chilled, sombre production providing the backdrop for typically passionate rhymes from Cole, whilst the features are both very good too. I’ve played it 5 times already. Re-goddamn-playable.

This guy is very highly rated in hip-hop circles, and I know Indi is a pretty big fan. Hopefully this mixtape will expose him to a wider audience, and it’ll act as a bit of an education for me too as I’ve not got a great deal of material by him.

I can’t for the life of me remember what song this beat is from, I seem to recall it’s one that Drake’s rapped on….never mind. Anyway this is a great beat and Fashawn’s one of the best up and coming rappers from the hip-hop underground – good combination.

Rakaa from Dilated Peoples is dropping his debut solo LP titled Crown Of Thorns on July 20th.
It will be interesting to see how well he holds his own on a full length LP without the rest of his DP counterparts. On the evidence (see what I did there!?) of these two drops though, I have a feeling he will be just fine.
On these two we have production from frequent Mobb Deep collaborators Alchemist and Sid Roams so that is a straight up win for me on that front. Vocally, Rakaa enlists Evidence, Defari and Fashawn. Again, win. Two very different tracks. Two very different outcomes. Looking forward to this.

This has been quite some time in the making. The buzz for this started months ago (if I recall correctly?) and this will certainly excite many.
I have to be honest and say I know very little about Fashawn, aside from the fact that he gets an awful lot of praise from many sectors (both underground and mainstream heads). That alone is enough to convince me that this could be pretty decent. Of course, it won’t be on the classic level of the original, but take it for what it is and it should make for interesting listening.

Most of y’all should be familiar with the XXL 10 Freshman thing they do. Last year’s was great, and they were pretty much spot on with them all. I can’t say I know as much about 2 or 3 of this year’s 10, but expect a lot from the ones I am familiar with. I do however find the inclusion of OJ Da Juiceman in a ‘serious’ list to be ridiculous (quiet down Tempest!). For those who haven’t yet checked out who’s in this year, click here.
Anyway, this is a mixtape full of new tracks from these guys and will 100% be worth grabbing. Some of these guys are definitely going to blow up this year, so don’t miss out.
