Phonte and Elzhi-Not Here Anymore

New material from Phonte, taken from his upcoming album Charity Starts At Home, and he grabs one of Detroit’s finest in Elzhi for the assist here.

A track full of interesting blends too, repeatedly pulling together a few musical dichotomies for a diverse and engaging listen; The smooth, soft vibes in the synth and samples mesh cleverly with a thudding, hypnotising percussion, the relatable, realistic raps combine cleanly with the soulful, daydreamy (that’s not a word) hook, and Phonte’s more laidback rapping style contrasts nicely with Elzhi’s sharper delivery. It’s an apt representation of Phonte’s own versatility and eclecticism, as the various styles he’s encountered throughout his career with Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange and other projects appear to each have injected influence here, and it certainly gets hopes high for the upcoming album.

Elzhi-It Ain't Hard To Tell [Video]

Another set of visuals for Elzhi’s excellent Illmatic tribute, ELmatic here. The camera-work here catches the themes of the subject matter in question with drive-by shots of the hardships that the streets present whilst sporadic cuts back to Elzhi in centre stage maintains the focus on one of the illest emcees out right now. Would love to know how Nas feels about this project.

Elzhi-Elmatic (Free Download)

Let’s make this snappy as I’m sure you heads will want to get your hands on this classic (or so I’ve been told) tribute to Nas’ debut.

“The 10-track offering was produced entirely by Will Sessions. Fellow D-Town MC Royce Da 5’9” and Illmatic beatmaker Pete Rock also make appearances.”

I will be listening to this after the football and no doubt tweeting on it later.

Cop the mixtape and form your own opinion here.

Elzhi-Halftime Video

After the track hit the streets only a few days ago it didn’t take Elzhi long to release those visuals.

Those who follow my posts will realise I’m a big fan of black and white when it comes to hip-hop as it perfectly demonstrates those gritty undertones the genre found itself in during the mid 90′s.

With all that said, ELmatic is Elzhi’s tribute to Nas and his classic debut, but I wonder what Nas himself makes of it all?

Swag Elzhi’s audio here and why not take a watch of Nas’ original Halftime over here.

ELmatic becomes available to the masses on 10th May. Stay tuned.

Elzhi-Halftime

Latest drop from the highly-anticipated ELmatic from Slum Village one-timer, Elzhi.

I recently made reference to Detroit State Of Mind that Elzhi is perhaps one of the only emcees in the game right now capable of taking on Nas’ classic beats. These said beats have actually been slightly revamped which is a pleasant update on the originals making them somewhat more contemporary. The lyricism itself is packed with multi’s as you would expect, but obviously can’t match Nas’ superb delivery on the original.

Elzhi-Detroit State of Mind

Looking forward to this oft-delayed, much anticipated Elmatic project from Elzhi, and it looks like it’s finally coming on 10th May.

That hype is about to increase 1o-fold with El’s take on Nas’ classic NY State of Mind. Borrowing the key-laden, thumping instrumental of the original, Elzhi comes through with some clever raps packaged in a smooth, clear delivery that makes for a very enjoyable remix. Naturally, surpassing the original is out of the question but this is a very fitting tribute and a solid set of raps on the ever-replayable production. Shouts to Matt for coming through as usual: Elmatic, May 10th!

Two Drops From Black Milk's 'Album Of The Year'

I’ve tried to keep you as up-to-date as possible with this one over the past few months, so let’s end this chapter on a high with a couple of essentials from the album itself.

The first, Deadly Medley, for which we dropped the video a while back, was a little disappointing initially but has since grown on me whilst I’ve been bumping the audio.

The second, Black & Brown, is a typical Black Milk beat. Deep, melodic violin strings decorate the backdrop whilst Milk’s drum machine characteristically powers in. Black Milk delivers lyrically too with a confident, flowing display that I’m quickly getting used to. A dosage of heavy repeat is prescribed for this number. Album Of The Year in stores (and iTunes) September 14th.

Had to get this out to you ASAP but in truth I’m a little disappointed with the track itself. Expected Milk to drop a really hard beat which the two powerhouses would tear into, instead it’s a little bit tame.

The video is clean at the moment and we still have no audio for you to cop yet. I do try for you though.

Elzhi-Kinda Like A Big Deal Freestyle

Elzhi spits a short freestyle over the ever-popular Clipse beat. Bit late on this production, but it’s a nice beat nonetheless. For those who haven’t already heard/read, Elzhi has officially declared himself departed from Slum Village, with his manager declaring the group ‘defunct’. It’s a shame, but I suppose they’re only down to 2 members so it makes sense. Remember to get that Villa Manifesto LP.

Black Milk's 'Album Of The Year' - Artwork/Tracklisting

Wow. Influx of Detroit-based hip-hop recently.

Artwork for Black Milk’s ambitiously titled upcoming sophomore, Album Of The Year, which drops September 14th.

Tracklisting after the jump. That joint Deadly Medley with fellow ‘D’ natives, Royce Da 5’9″ and Elzhi looks lyriculous! (I can make words up if I want).

If you missed the first leak from the album you can get that here.
