A mashup album that pairs Drake with The Fugees’ classic The Score. This mashup marks 15 years since the original release of The Score, and on the project Alexei updates the original Fugees’ album with new verses from Drake, as well as Andre 3000, Lil Wayne, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, and Q-Tip.
“The Score is easily my favorite hip-hop album of all time and I still listen to it regularly, often before I sit down to work on my own music,” says Alexei. “To keep it exciting after 15 years, I decided to spice it up a bit. The Score has texture and soul that you don’t find much in today’s production. Put that and Drake together, and you have an incredibly fun listen.”
Should be very interesting listen. Inevitably, there will be those that are ‘outraged’ at ‘desecrating’ a classic but give it a chance first as Alexei is certainly a talented dude, and I’m sure he’ll retain the essence and brilliance of the original.

The release, timed to mark Lil Wayne’s release from jail, comes after several days of uncertainty due to Universal Motown’s cease and desist letter to block the release.

Cash Money Records and Universal Group have sent a cease and desist letter to DJ Alexei in an attempt to stop the release of Lil Wayne’s remix album (originally announced here). DJ Alexei has expressed regret at the labels’ decision, but remained optimistic that Lil Wayne’s fans would get to hear the album.
“While I’m flattered that label executives see Weezy’s 90s Ball as a threat to the ‘I Am Not a Human Being’ profits, they are being shortsighted – the fans will buy the official release even if they had downloaded Weezy’s 90s Ball because these are two completely different bodies of work,” said Alexei. “Lil Wayne released the free ‘No Ceilings’ mixtape not long before ‘Rebirth’ and that doesn’t appear to have hurt sales.” Alexei added that it will ultimately be up to the fans to make sure that everyone could get a copy of Weezy’s 90s Ball “just as they made sure that Danger Mouse’s ‘Grey Album’ didn’t die a quiet death after the cease and desist letter.”

“Weezy’s 90s Ball, Vol. 1, a remix and mashup album that pairs Lil Wayne with 90s rock hits from Nirvana, Radiohead, Stone Temple Pilots, and other influential acts. On the album, Alexei both reinterprets old Lil’ Wayne hits and combines Weezy’s numerous feature verses to create new songs. Musically, the album is divided into tracks that retain the rock sensibility of the source material and hip-hop-influenced tracks on which Alexei combines samples of 90s rock with hip-hop drums. In both cases, the resulting songs stand out in their intensity and impact”.
