When it comes to treble-time flows, there aren’t many better in the game than Busta and Twista. I, for one, have a lot of time for hype tracks like this, if only to recognise the difficulty that rapping like this must present. I just hope Busta can turn this form into something memorable like these two gems. Here and here.

Yeah, this happened. Multi-talented Labrinth, who is an instrumentalist and produces, sings and even raps, has gathered this all star cast. Three leading UK urban artists alongside the legend that is Busta Rhymes? A recipe for a classic collabo. Labrinth’s album, Electronic Earth will be released on the 19th of this month.

The combination is a good one, as Kendrick’s very enjoyable verses are supplement by an equally-likeable contribution from Busta, who tones down his natural aggressiveness to fit the mood of the track, without sacrificing the quality of his delivery. The production is unaltered and rightfully so, with the jovial horn melodies adding to the frantic nature of the track in a manner that synergises well with the raps. Definitely one to grab whether you’ve heard the original or not.
A bass-heavy, relatively minimal production, fans of Chris’ Look At Me Now will enjoy the beat here, though the highlight is undoubtedly Busta’s lightning-quick rapping, as he comes through with some incredible speed on his verses (the first in particular) to anchor this track admirably. Breezy’s hook is a little uninspired in truth, and whilst I’m glad he’s not been forced into the powerful-style hooks he’s normally associated with on mainstream features, it still comes up a little short for me. Worth grabbing for those Busta verses though. If the lineup wasn’t enough clarification, the latest set of visuals from Travis Barker’s solo album (available now) are pretty much swelling with energy and intensity. Yela, Busta and Twista come through with very enjoyable raps, each bringing high-tempo, high-octane verses that make the most of an edgy, guitar-tinged production, whilst Lil Jon actually fits in rather well with his aggressive style on the hook enhancing the intensity of the track. Barker is typically solid on the drums, though its his general production work here that shines through, serving up a production that creates a nice platform for each rapper to work with. Decent video, focused largely around a somewhat gothically-styled auction (?!), with the dim, grainy shooting style adding a darkness to the audio that enhances the rock influence on the production. Enhances the audio well enough, and worth a watch. Found on the Give The Drummer Some album, available on iTunes and so forth.

I can’t be the only one, but I’m pretty tired of these remixes by him where he just sticks a load of guest verses on it and expects a hit. Having said that I really wanted to hear the Game verse on this and thus had to check it out. I’m also pretty sure there’s a lot of you out there who still lap this stuff up, so who am I to hate on it? Summary: I don’t like this and I didn’t like the original either, you might though.

Short recap this week, with just the three noteworthy and relevant posts from the R&B/pop world: Tinie Tempah and Ellie Goulding’s collaboration got some visuals, a pretty interesting electro remix of Diddy-Dirty Money’s I Hate That You Love Me was liberated, and finally Musiq Soulchild came through with one of the better tracks of January, with his first single from his upcoming sixth album. Formalities are now dealt with, commence your clicking as of right…now.
Great to to see S.A.S. and Bigz get international recognition with the features here, and both come through with enjoyable verses. Can’t really complain about any of the verses on the track in honesty (I doubt anyone’s expecting a lyrical masterclass) and they all fit the style and vibe of the track nicely. Kanye’s and Jay’s verses from the original are on this still, which further solidifies how this ridiculously immense beat really wasn’t suited to their particular styles and would have been better off in the hands of someone like Busta Rhymes.
Now Busta spazzed on the original, so when I saw that Twista had taken it on I couldn’t wait to hear what he’d come out with, though either way one thing was certain: it was going to be fire. It is. I honestly can’t tell you whose verse I prefer, but if I had to chose I’d say Twista possibly just takes it. One thing I do know though is the remix could have been so much better if either Brown’s or Lil’ Wayne’s verses were dropped and both Busta and Twista’s were left on. Busta continues his return to form on this absolute banger from legendary electro DJ’s Tiësto and Diplo. I was already a fan of the track when Sway went in on it on his The Delivery 2 mixtape, and whilst it’s the type of track that suits the breakneck flows of either guy, Busta kills it. As for the video itself, it’s exactly what you’d expect from this track. Set in a dark grimey warehouse club, there does appear some sort of storyline with what seems to be the ‘dance version’ of Medusa intent on hypnotising everyone into having dance offs (I can only dream to pull some of these moves off), whilst the rest of the club dances anyway. It’s not complicated, but then it doesn’t need to be. Thanks to James for the reminder on this one!
I’ve more than compensated though, throwing in almost 20 tracks for you to enjoy this week. There’s no skimping on the big names either, as there are some strong contributions from some of the bigger stars in the R&B/pop world. No real recap this week as the music industry has all but shut down, though the Alicia Keys version of Devil In A New Dress is a must-download. Click on for the first R&B Friday of 2011.
I really wasn’t feeling the original at all, but hearing Busta snap and turn back the clock with a passionate, intense performance is absolutely worth listening to. He comes through with that high-speed flow, which goes into some ridiculously tongue-twisting segments, and is accompanied by his usual craziness with snarls and growls. This beat is absolutely made for Busta, and it’s a shame it ended up with Minaj: someone out there needs to cut her verse out and throw Em’s back in!
This one landed in my lap yesterday, but a little too late for posting. Kay Slay gets four of the fastest, most experienced spitters in the hip-hop game together and draws some tongue-twisting verses out of them. Of the rappers included, I’ve always been a bigger fan of Busta, and it’s great to hear him snapping like this again as he’s always more enjoyable when he brings his high-tempo game. Understandably, it takes a few listens to catch any of the lyrics but Twista probably edges it in that respect, while Jaz-O probably has the most diversity with his flows. The futuristic synths grab your attention throughout the track and almost solely create the mood and feel, add a drifty aspect to the track that allows you to enjoy the production independently from the vocals/lyrics.
Not only does it contain two of the original Ruff Ryders crew, but the production really oozes the classic RR vibe, with a pounding, driving Swizzy beat having a real throwback quality. X brings his typically aggressive style to his raps, and although his hook feels a bit dated, it does fit with the old school vibe of the track. Worth a listen. All of them are solid, with the Diddy/Ross track boasting a relaxing beat that will win many admirers. The Busta/50 track has some real potential, with a slightly dark feel that suits all involved parties nicely.
