R&B Fridays: Episode 116

Is R&B currently suffering from one of its worst recessions? Outside of a few upcoming stars (Frank Ocean, The Weeknd and others) there hasn’t been much in terms of consistent quality, and outside of the aforementioned two artists, it’s increasingly difficult to see where the recovery will come from.

However, one of the few artists in recent years to really come away with credit recently released a free album, as The-Dream dropped off a new project, and even if R&B is struggling, soul season is underway with debut visuals from John West and the latest single from Goapele.

Click below for this week’s six pack, and see if an R&B comeback is on the cards.

Couple of days off on this, but with 15 rappers on one song, I think you’ll probably let it slide. For those that aren’t familiar with Racks, it’s essentially one of those infectious mainstream hip-hop tracks that comes out of nowhere and takes on a life of its own, helped in part by various rappers jumping on the beat (don’t worry, I’ve labelled them in order for you!).

14 of them join YC here, some having released remixes prior to this official all-star compliation, with most being very well known names. It’s hard to pick a winning verse from the bunch, though B.o.B, Trae Tha Truth and Nelly (surprisingly) made enjoyable contributions.

DJ Khaled-Welcome To My Hood (Remix) ft. Ludacris, T-Pain, Busta Rhymes, Mavado, Twista, Birdman, Ace Hood, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Bun B, Game & Waka Flocka

Is this the longest title we’ve ever seen on OTU? It’s certainly up there! DJ Khaled enlists a plethora of rappers to take on the remix of his recent(ish) single, Welcome To The Hood.

I can’t be the only one, but I’m pretty tired of these remixes by him where he just sticks a load of guest verses on it and expects a hit. Having said that I really wanted to hear the Game verse on this and thus had to check it out. I’m also pretty sure there’s a lot of you out there who still lap this stuff up, so who am I to hate on it?

Summary: I don’t like this and I didn’t like the original either, you might though.

Ace Hood and Swizz Beatz-Hustle Hard

There’s no denying Swizzy has hit good form in recent weeks with #MonsterMondays, and here he comes through with what may be his best beat of the bunch.

Haunting, eerie melodies always make for a great hip-hop beat, and Swizzy utilises one that sounds like it’s straight out of a murder movie. The work on the keys is incredibly simple but is amplified with an echoed effect to great effect, and placed alongside an effective, driving percussion line. Ace Hood comes through with some decent enough raps, though this sort of production could make any rapper sound above average. It is a bit of a shame that they didn’t play off the dark production with appropriate lyrics, but there we are.

Ace Hood-Deuces Freestyle

I was waiting for someone to take on this great beat, and Ace Hood has stepped up to the plate.

Decent effort, and whilst he was never going to outdo Tyga, he still would have been better served utilising his fast-paced flow rather than the slower delivery.

Ace Hood - Super High [Remix]

Ace Hood takes on the hit Rick Ross song. Carries himself well here, would probably say he has the best verse from everyone I’ve heard take this on tbh.
