Skream-Demented

Very demented. Dark, edgy electronic vibes coarse through this one from start to middle, backed by thudding bass typical of the dubstep style, whilst the middle section opts for a minimal build section that eventually launches back into those pulsating synths. One the dubstep and electro fans will really appreciate.

Alpines-Drive (Skream’s I Ain’t Got A License Remix)

To my less-dance centric ears, Skream can be very hit and miss with his beats. Here, he’s pretty much hit turned up to the absolute max. Grabbing the enchanting vocal stylings of Alpines, Skream attacks the track head on with a pulsating, energetic production that progresses superbly throughout the song.

Thudding along for the first section, Skream briefly switches things up around 50 seconds with a high-octane teaser of what is yet to come in the track. That teaser comes to life around halfway in as the motivational hook is layered with that same punchy percussion and throbbing synth line to create a neck-snapping production that you’ll struggle to sit still to. The track closes out in that same intense manner, and this is by my reckoning one of Skream’s finest productions to date, aided admirably by capable vocals once again from Alpines.

Magnetic Man-Whip My Hair (Willow Smith Cover)

The popular Magnetic Man trio stopped by BBC’s Live Lounge to add their dub spin to Willow’s Whip My Hair, and certainly came away with an interesting result. The beat is fantastic, with the booming bass lows being hugely atmospheric, whilst the hook peaks and dips those thick bass hits to good effect.

Would have been nice to hear a little more going on production-wise (outside of the sporadic, short and often odd samples), as my most frequent criticism of the dub style is that it’s the closest thing to a homogenous genre, though I’m not as wisened to the style as many others so maybe you’ll hear more than I do.

Definitely worth a listen though, as it is a pretty dark and interesting take on the track. Might it have been more entertaining with Willow’s actual vocals? Maybe. Be sure to catch Artwork from the MM trio live at XOYO in London tomorrow night!

Skream & Example - Shot Yourself In The Foot Again [Official Video]

One for the dubstep fans now. I’m not going to protest to being an expert on dub, but I’m quite partial to a track or two if it’s good enough. Example links up with one of dubstep’s most dominant producers, Skream, to bring us what will surely be the first big dub track of the year.

I have to say I’m in love with this tune and the accompanying video. Produced by Example himself, the video takes you on the moral dilemma of spending a birthday night out with your mates or an evening in with your other half: We’ve all been there. One quick drink leads to another and before you know it you’re on a full scale bender. The raw emotion and passion shown in the video only helps to improve the track and adds another dimension, even more so if you’ve been in a similar situation yourself (or is that just me?). Either way, the video is a great showcase of both Example’s video producing skills and the track itself.

Magnetic Man and John Legend-Getting Nowhere (Skream Remix)

The original was one of the most unexpected collaborations of 2010, and 1/3 of the mighty Magnetic Man trio opts to give it a refresh with a solo remix.

I’m going to go with the original in this case, as its light yet energetic dub influences were far better synergised with John’s voice than the more minimal-experimental style Skream adopts here. It’s a solid track as an independent piece, and works as a relaxed and laidback affair, but remixes by nature can’t escape being viewed comparatively and hence I feel it comes up a little short. No doubt Skream fans will view it differently!
