Filip Filipi and Mansions on the Moon-Big City Chaser

A thoroughly excellent collaboration. Mansions on the Moon bring their atmospheric, night pop style to the track, creating a powerful yet ambient aura with their ethereal vocals throughout, whilst Work Drugs play on that style with a beautifully dreamy synths and a driving percussion. Filip doesn’t disappoint with his gravelly raps sliding into the vibe of the track nicely, whilst his ambitious lyricism also fits well. Really enjoyable effort, perfect for some winter listening, and one of the more rounded tracks in recent weeks.

Mansions on the Moon-For Awhile

I’m really beginning to love these guys. Their unique brand of night-pop is always a treat for the ears, and this second release from their upcoming debut LP certainly fills me wth high hopes for that album.

Moody, electronica-style synths open up the track, and are quickly injected with atmosphere by an echoed vocal sample, and followed by quietened yet driving percussion. Add into the mix a light guitar strum and heavier, almost tribal percussion for the hook, and you have a diverse and refined blend with a powerful ambience. Undoubtedly a superb platform to work on, and the mellow, melancholy vocals from the group that boast addictive melodies that make the most of the production. Another top effort from the eclectic and excellent Mansions on the Moon.

Mansions on the Moon-Darkness

I kicked up quite a fuss about these guys some time ago and they’ve returned to the limelight with this rather enjoyable track, expected to be on their upcoming debut album.

It’s still a struggle to categorise their music, not least because of their eclecticism and diversity, and here their style certainly has influences from The xx and Empire of the Sun, fusing the two together into a piece of ‘night-pop’ with a positive tint. The production has a contemplative, reflective feel with a moody synth providing the primary melody in the verses, followed by an upward turn for the hook that incorporates various keys and samples for an effervescent, space-like feel that adds positivity and atmosphere. The whispery vocals have a very relaxing effect, and integrate superbly with the production, creating a mellow all-rounder that will have a very widespread appeal. One of their best tracks to date.

N*E*R*D-Hypnotize U (Mansions on the Moon Remix)

The original was pretty good, and having recently stumbled upon the potential of Mansions on the Moon, it’s fair to say I met this with great excitement. Sadly, MotM don’t contribute any vocals, but they do rework the mellow effort into a more psychedlic electro style that works just as well as the original. Lots of thumping bass and lengthy synths at a high tempo works to really alter the feel of the track, and certainly makes for an enjoyable remix.

Mansions on the Moon-She Makes Me Feel

When it comes to OTU matters, I derive the most pleasure from discovering a new act/sound that is so unique and diverse it simply has to be huge.

I thought I’d look into these guys after their likeable track with Christian Rich, and have a great feeling about them: they already have co-signs from the likes of N*E*R*D* and Diplo, and have some good buzz behind them.

Originally released back in April, it’s a glorious blend of alternative, chillout and pop from both a production and vocal standpoint. The relaxing, airy beat is supplemented nicely by some electronic elements, and all tied together by the best use of Autotune I’ve heard to date: they use it in accompaniment with actual vocals, which is a rare and enjoyable treat. A genuinely fantastic song that really deserves a go regardless of your tastes. Audio for this track can be accquired here, and the full mixtape here.

Christian Rich and Mansions on the Moon-Fall From Grace Ruff

Why didn’t I realise Christian Rich were a duo?

From their upcoming Arcade album, the Neptunes-affiliated duo come through with a very good hybrid track that is difficult to dislike regardless of your tastes: there are hints of alternative influence in the hook and percussion, R&B and soul elements in the melodies, all tied together with a chillout sensibility. As well as being incredibly diverse, it boasts a very memorable hook that gives the track a strong anchor to work off. There are a couple of empty verses, which I actually like in this instance as it allows you to appreciate the production and hook that little bit more. Very enjoyable track.
