Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools (Drank)

It’s been a pretty good week for hip-hop and music in general, and Kendrick adds his contribution to that with the latest release from his upcoming major label debut, good kid m.A.A.d city.

One of the most consistent rappers and beat selectors over the last 18 months, Kendrick’s pulled out another great track here. The production moves between muted, haunting and atmospheric on the verses to lively, energetic and vivacious on the hook, making the chorus a clear anchor point whilst encouraging closer listening on the verses. Lyrically, it’s a very contemplative track as Kendrick discusses the perils of alcohol abuse, whilst admitting it’s difficult to avoid heavy drinking when you’re living the sort of life he does, and that dichotomy is represented really well in verses which begin with rational thinking, and slowly bow to the temptation of drinking. The internal conversation on the second verse is a highlight, and this is excellent work from one of hip-hop’s brightest talents.
