Jean Grae-U&Me&EveryoneWeKnow

The excellent Jean Grae dropped off a track from her upcoming Cake or Death project a couple of days back, and it’s quite possibly one of her best efforts to date.

Opening with a smooth, jazzy intro, the soft instrumentation cradles you into a state of utter relaxation, and the introduction of percussion around 90 seconds in doesn’t break the flow at all, combining superbly with the mellow piano melody and deep bass plucks. Jean steps in with some fantastic storytelling raps that paint a vivid picture of a complicated relationship, coming through on a lighter, more laidback style that suits the mood of the production perfectly, whilst ensuring her slick flows are packed densely with poignant lyricism. Few do ‘relationship rap’ as well as Jean (see her feature on Wale’s Goodbye) and this is a great piece of hip-hop that fans of other genres will be able to appreciate too.
