Now you’re hooked in with some classic FK, let’s get serious. As with most pop punk bands, they’ll release a standard record on their LP, and if it becomes a single or generally popular, they tend to include an acoustic version either as a bonus track or on a subsequent EP.
If you happen to like music at all, you’ll click the continue button and find out about music from Hit The Lights, Acceptance, Holiday Parade and This Providence (who Ajay threwback to here).
Don’t be a belson, get in the mix.
First up, and in no particular order, are the entries from Hit The Lights; a hard and fast pop-punk band full of hard guitaring and ill-thought lyrics. Their track Tell Me Where You Are was released on their 2nd full LP Skip School, Start Fights. The subsequent acoutsic version was released on their EP Coast to Coast in 2009, featuring some bird called Jaime Lacey.
Tempest’s Verdict
Original Tell Me Where You Are- 6.5/10 Verses could be a bit more imaginative, more than listenable but could use some variation.
Acoustic Tell Me Where You Are- 8/10 Slower version that accentuates the lyrics to a meaningful level. Only slight let down on this track is this Jaime Lacey broad, who sounds a bit spasticated. Still very, very good. Plus the first 2 seconds sounds just like the lift in my University library, which is what reminded me of this track.
Next is a track from This Providence called Let Down. Released on the same LP Ajay threwback to, Who Are You Now in 2008, and the acoustic track popped up on a Daytrotter Sessions EP this year. Watch the video here.
Original Let Down- 7.5/10 Very solid track, decent choruses followed by better verses and a fancy bridge. Compelling and rich.
Acoustic Let Down- 6.5/10 Sadly its 1-1 in the Original vs. Acoustic scorelines. The acoustic version really lacks the substance that the orignal provides, and is just a bit weak. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t kick it out of bed, but song-4-song it’s fighting a losing battle.
Third, for you glorious benders is Holiday Parade with Getaway. Released on Tickets and Passports last year and then subsequently released this year on Tickets and Passports Acoustic Sessions. The original track is the most played song in my iTunes, and there is a good reason for this. ITS F*CKING AMAZING!!
Original Getaway- 9.873/10 Still can’t get bored of this song. Words can’t really suffice.
Acoustic Getaway- 8/10 Very good, but is it really going to beat a 9.873-er? Naaaah.
Last, but far from least is a track from Christian influenced Acceptance. Different is, if you won’t excuse the pun, is a different calibre of track to the others. Slower, with some cracking piano, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable song. The acoustic track was released on some dingey old EP, so they quality isn’t fantastic, but it was a hard find in itself. All the way back in 2005 folks; for some perspective, this is when the 7/7 bombing occured.
Original Different- 8/10 Brilliant track from a band who sadly broke up after the release of their one and only album.
Acoustic Different- 7.5/10 Close one for me to call, but I had to side with the the original mainly for the quality of the track. The fancy piano is replaced with guitars and its equally as likable. I’m doing it a disservice by giving it less than an 8 here really.
So there we have it, Original wins 3-1, but the scoreline doesn’t tell the entire story. It’s like a tiger going up again a shark on the side of a mountain, but for a couple of outstanding tracks it could have been more even. Hey, if any of you knob-jockeys actually download the tracks I might have to do a rematch.
