Hate Is The New Love

Since hip hop began, just over 3 decades ago, a lot has changed but one thing that has always remained is competition. Whether it’s through friendly rivalries or full-blooded hate ‘beef’, it’s something that’s always entertained the masses and remains one of the most talked about topics when it comes to hip-hop. It’s something that has spilled into other genres of music as well.

That brings me to this post, and new feature for you lucky folks. Every Tuesday, we will be posting a classic beef track from over the years with a brief history behind it. This is a feature that will be rotated between myself, Murray and Ajay on a week by week basis, so you will be getting 3 quite different points of view and aspects on this feature each week.

So click on for the very first edition of this feature, inspired by a track that was brought to my attention by Murray. (You should already know who this post will be about from the photo!)

So about 2 years ago Royce Da 5’9″ and Mistah F.A.B. battled each other at an event sponsored by Allhiphop with Mistah F.A.B. being declared the winner. Royce made reference to this battle soon after on a freestyle over Jay-Z’s track Blue Magic, where he says the line:

$100,000 chain like my face up, tell Mistah F.A.B. get his cash when he wakes up.

Royce had claimed that this wasn’t a diss however that did not stop Mistah F.A.B. from taking offence, who promptly released the fully fledged diss track Bodied. Royce’s response to this was just savage, over 7 minutes of spitting pure fire over more than a few beats (starting off with the track Victory that I recently covered in my Classic Collabo), he even sings a little too.

Not long after this the two of them had a conversation and agreed to squash the beef, with this rap battle threatening to spill onto the streets as local rappers in Detroit and the Bay Area (where Mistah F.A.B. is from) started taking offence, creating a lot of tension between the two cities. Personally I just feel Mistah F.A.B. had no way of coming back from Royce’s Who Got Bodied? track, it was just pure ether.

You can grab this epic diss track below, trust me you won’t be disappointed.
